CHICAGO – White Sox hitting coach Greg Walker has resigned after nine seasons, the latest change in a hectic week for the disappointing team.

The former Chicago slugger said he told owner Jerry Reinsdorf a month ago he planned to leave after Wednesday’s regular-season finale, regardless of who the manager is next year.

“It’s just the right thing to do. It’s time to go,” Walker said Wednesday before Chicago played Toronto. “Somebody else’s turn. I always said there would be a day when I wouldn’t be the hitting coach here and that day is here.”

Ozzie Guillen was released from his contract Monday and became manager of the Marlins on Wednesday. The 51-year-old Walker said his decision had nothing to do with Guillen’s departure. He said he’d also earlier informed Guillen of his plans.

“It didn’t have to do with recent events, so no matter who the manager was I was not going to be the hitting coach next year,” Walker said.

The White Sox will finish below .500 this season, the third straight year they’ve missed the playoffs.

Walker’s biggest booster and prized pupil has been Paul Konerko, who batted .300 this season with 31 homers and 105 RBIs.

But other White Sox hitters, for whatever reason, have struggled, including Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and Gordon Beckham. Dunn was out of the lineup Wednesday with a .159 batting average.

Walker said some of his decision was personal and he wanted to spend time with his family.

There were numerous reports earlier this month that Walker and general manager Ken Williams engaged in a shouting match.

“Nobody in this organization the last three years has not been beat up,” Walker said. “You have to go through tough times to make this happen …. You have to have a thick skin to do this job.”

Walker said he has no plans but will have dinner with Reinsdorf and discuss his future.

Walker spent nine seasons in the major leagues as a player with the White Sox (1982-90) and Baltimore (1990) and was a .260 career hitter with 113 home runs and 444 RBI.

The White Sox have already announced they are bringing back pitching coach Don Cooper – who served as interim manager the last two games – and first base coach Harold Baines with multiyear deals. Bench coach Joey Cora will join Guillen in Miami. The futures of third base coach Jeff Cox and bullpen coach Juan Nieves are undetermined.

The team also announced Wednesday a four-year contract extension with popular TV announcer Ken “Hawk” Harrelson.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jake Peavy struck out a season-high nine and Alex Rios homered to help the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.

Peavy (7-7) allowed four hits and walked two in 6 1-3 innings against a Twins team that had three players who were called up from Double-A in the last two days.

Alejandro De Aza had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, and Sergio Santos picked up his 29th save for the White Sox, who have won three in a row and eight of 12.

Liam Hendriks (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings in his major league debut. Chris Parmelee had two hits in his first game as a pro, but the Twins lost for the 14th time in 17 games.

Paul Konerko, who hasn’t hit a homer in his last 60 at-bats, got a much-needed day off, but the White Sox still managed to scratch together enough offense for Peavy. Brent Morel added an RBI single as the Sox beat the Twins for the eighth time in the last nine games in the series.

The White Sox are in the middle of a stretch of 28 straight games against the AL Central, but they only have three games left against division-leading Detroit. The Tigers beat the Indians 10-1 on Tuesday night, keeping the White Sox eight games back.

“We’re still in the pennant race,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “I know it’s going to be hard. … One thing about it, we’re not going to quit.”

There was a time when the Twins owned the White Sox, going 29-7 against them in a stretch that included six straight victories to open 2011. But the wheels have come off for a Twins team that expected to contend for a third straight division title.

Calling up Hendriks, Parmelee and center fielder Joe Benson from Double-A New Britain gave the Twins three players in the starting lineup making their major league debuts for the first time in franchise history, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau.

Benson misplayed a fly ball from De Aza in the fifth inning, diving for it and letting it get past him for a triple. Morel followed with a single to give the White Sox a 3-0 lead.

That was plenty for Peavy, who stranded runners on third base in the second and fourth innings but never really ran into trouble all night long. Joe Mauer went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, hearing plenty of boos when Matt Thornton got him swinging in the eighth.

The Twins were shut out for the 12th time this season, tied a season high with 14 strikeouts and have managed just two runs in their last four games. They trail the Tigers by 22 games in the Central and were officially eliminated from the playoff race on Tuesday night.

NOTES: The Twins said Justin Morneau will go through early batting practice on Wednesday to test his concussion symptoms. Even though he is not on the DL, he will have to get approval from Major League Baseball before being cleared to return to the field. When he does, Morneau will only DH and not play 1B. … The last team to debut at least three players in the starting lineup on the same day was the San Diego Padres, when they had four in 1986. … The last time three Twins made their big league debuts in the same game was April 7, 1999, against Toronto, when Joe Mays, Dan Perkins and Mike Lincoln all came out of the bullpen. … Guillen said he considered giving Konerko one of the games of Monday’s doubleheader off, but wanted to get him a full day’s rest. Konerko will be back in the lineup on Wednesday night. … White Sox OF Juan Pierre went 0 for 4 and remains two hits shy of 2,000 for his career. … RHP Carl Pavano (7-11, 4.60) takes the mound in the series finale on Wednesday night against White Sox LHP John Danks (6-10, 4.01). Danks is just 2-7 on the road this season, the fourth-lowest winning percentage in the majors. But he’s 6-2 with a 2.85 ERA over his last 12 starts after starting the season 0-8 with a 5.25 ERA. Pavano is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts against the Sox this year. He’s given up an AL-high 221 hits this season and has allowed nine or more in eight of his last nine starts.

CHICAGO — White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko is hoping to return to the lineup Thursday after being sidelined by a bruised left calf.

Konerko hit in the batting cage and ran on an underwater treadmill before Chicago hosted the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. He says his calf is still tender and probably will be for another week or so, but he thinks it might improve enough to allow him to play in the next two days.

Konerko is batting .305 with 25 homers and 76 RBIs for the White Sox, who are in third place in the AL Central.

The All-Star slugger was hit on his calf by a pitch from Andrew Miller during the fourth inning of Chicago’s 5-3 loss to Boston on Sunday. He eventually went to first base but left after the inning.

Adam Dunn started at first again on Wednesday night.

CHICAGO (AP)—The Chicago White Sox traded starting pitcher Edwin Jackson(notes)
and utility player Mark Teahen(notes) to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange
for reliever Jason Frasor(notes) and pitching prospect Zach Stewart(notes).

With the trade deadline looming Sunday, White Sox manager Kenny Williams
said this week that he was undecided whether to cut payroll or add veterans for
the stretch run. He said Wednesday’s trade helps on both counts.

“We needed to make a little bit of a dent in our payroll, which is stressed
a little bit,” Williams said. “But we did not want to be making a move that
would be counterproductive to the opportunity for us to win still.”

Chicago acquired the 27-year-old Jackson from the Arizona Diamondbacks on
July 30 last season. The right-hander is 7-7 this season with a 3.92 ERA in 19
starts for the White Sox, who were carrying six starters on their roster.

“At the end of the day, I’ve come to understand the game of baseball,”
said Jackson, who is eligible for free agency after this season. “This is not
my first time being traded. Any time I’ve been traded, there’s never been any
hard feelings.”

Jackson has been dealt five times since being drafted by the Los Angeles
Dodgers as a 17-year-old in 2001. Toronto will be his sixth organization.

“I was born on the move, being a military brat,” Jackson said. “My whole
life is pick up and make new friends.”

Teahen was signed as a free agent before last season to be Chicago’s
starting third baseman. The 29-year-old was derailed by injuries and ended up as
bench player for White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. He hit .203 in 51 games this
season with three homers and 11 RBI.

“Mixed emotions for sure,” Teahen said. “Obviously, I’m disappointed in
the way it all worked out here. I wanted it to go a lot different.”

Frasor is a native of the Chicago area. The 33-year-old right-hander was 1-1
with a 2.98 ERA for Toronto in a setup role.

“He’s one of the top quality relievers in baseball,” Williams said. “He
will fit in.”

Stewart was a third-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 2008. The
24-year-old started three games for the Blue Jays this season, going 0-1 with a
4.86 ERA. He was 5-5 with a 4.20 ERA for Double-A New Hampshire. Stewart will be
assigned to Triple-A Charlotte.

“Zach Stewart has been on our radar for a long time, particularly last year
when he was doing some special things in Double-A,” Williams said. “He will
ultimately be in the mix in some way, shape or form. Most likely this year.”

To fill the open spot on the 25-man big-league roster, the White Sox
recalled center fielder Alejandro De Aza(notes) from Charlotte and put him in the
lineup for Wednesday’s afternoon game against the Detroit Tigers.

“The other part of doing what we did today, that allowed us to get De Aza
in the lineup in center field,” Williams said. “That affords us to give Ozzie
something more than honestly what (Alex) Rios is giving us. Rios is going to
have to take a back seat now.”

The Rios has hit just .208 this season in 97 games despite a hefty long-term
contract that will pay him $12 million this season and has two more years plus a
club option remaining.

“Here’s what I told Ozzie: Do not worry about the size of the contract,”
Williams said. “Just worry about putting the players (on the field) on a given
day that can help you win.

“I’m sending a message to everyone.”

That’s all for today.

A nine-game losing streak is bound to have consequences and
for Bob Geren, the fallout resulted in the loss of his job as manager of the
Oakland Athletics.

With Geren relieved of his duties early on Thursday, it will be Bob Melvin
who guides the A’s tonight in the opener of a four-game series with the
Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Oakland’s current slide is the club’s longest since it dropped 10 in a row
from July 28-Aug. 7, 2008 and was extended with Wednesday’s 3-2 setback to
Baltimore. That was enough for team vice president and general manager Billy
Beane, who made the switch from Geren to Melvin on an interim basis for the
rest of this season on Thursday.

Geren had served as the Athletics’ manager since Nov. 17, 2006 and went
334-376 in his four-plus seasons at the helm. Oakland went 27-36 under Geren
this year and currently sits last in the American League West, eight games
back of first place.

In Wednesday’s loss, Coco Crisp notched a sacrifice fly and Jemile Weeks
picked up his first major-league hit, a third-inning double, while finishing
2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

“We need to play better,” Geren said. “First pitch on — every single inning.”

The task of turning the A’s around now falls to Melvin, who has previously
served as a major league manager with Seattle (2003-04) and Arizona (2005-09),
and is the Diamondbacks’ all-time winningest manager with a 337-340 mark.

Getting the call for the A’s this evening in Melvin’s debut will be righty
Trevor Cahill, who is 6-3 with a 2.65 earned run average, but is winless in
his last five starts. Cahill was awful his last time out in Boston, as he
allowed five runs and eight hits in seven innings, but escaped without a
decision in his team’s 9-8 loss.

That outing followed up a loss to New York that saw him surrender four runs in
six innings. Cahill’s loss that day was actually the start of the A’s
drought.

Cahill’s skid started with a loss to the White Sox on May 15. He is 1-2
in seven starts against them with a 3.70 ERA.

The White Sox were denied a sweep in their three-game set with the Seattle
Mariners on Wednesday, as they dropped a 7-4, 10-inning decision.

Sergio Santos (2-2) took the loss when he allowed the go-ahead runs to cross
the plate in Chicago’s third defeat in five contests.

Carlos Quentin went deep twice for the White Sox, which accounted for three of
their four runs.

“I think it was a good series. Obviously, you want to pick up that last
(game),” said Chicago second baseman Gordon Beckham.

Tonight, Chicago will rely on left-handed veteran Mark Buehrle, who has won
four of his last five decisions. Buehrle defeated the Detroit Tigers on
Friday, holding them to three runs and 10 hits in six innings, running his
record to 5-4 to go along with a 3.95 ERA.

Buehrle beat the A’s back on May 15, but is a mere 5-13 lifetime against them
with a 3.73 ERA in 28 games, 24 of which have been starts.

Chicago has split its six games with the A’s this season.

CHICAGO — The Seattle Mariners were having trouble scoring runs in Chicago until the sixth inning of series finale.

Miguel Olivo drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run double in the 10th inning, and the Mariners beat the White Sox 7-4 on Wednesday night.

“(Olivo) has always been a guy that’s gotten big hits,” Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. “I’ve been on the other side against him for a lot of years and he’s a step-up kind of guy.”

Justin Smoak started the winning rally with a leadoff bloop double off White Sox closer Sergio Santos (2-2). Adam Kennedy drew a walk, then Olivo — who had a solo homer in the eighth against his former team — drove in both runners with a grounder just inside of third base and into the left-field corner.

“(Wedge) trusts me a lot and I don’t want to let him down,” Olivo said. “I just focused more and saw better pitches to hit.”

Seattle ended a 10-game losing streak at U.S. Cellular Field and salvaged the finale of the three-game series. The Mariners have played 32 games decided by two runs or fewer this season, going 16-16 in those contests.

“The guys showed up and got after it,” Wedge said. “We ran into a little bump in the road, but how you react to it means everything to me and I know it means everything to (the players).”

White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin homered twice, hitting a solo shot in the first off Jason Vargas and a tying two-run shot in the eighth off reliever Jamey Wright.

Vargas said the home run pitch he threw to Quentin was well-placed.

“It went where I wanted it to go,” Vargas said. “He just put a good swing on it.”

Aaron Laffey (1-1) threw a scoreless inning to earn the win and Brandon League pitched a perfect 10th for his AL-leading 17th save of the season.

Vargas pitched 7 1-3 strong innings, but gave way to reliever Wright after allowing a single to Alexei Ramirez with one out in the eighth. Wright fell behind Quentin, who hit a 3-1 pitch into the left-field bleachers, tying the score at 4-all.

“When Carlos is where he is right now, he can carry a ballclub for a little while,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “Hopefully he stays there for a few days. It’s fun to see him not swinging at many bad pitches.”

Vargas, who three a shutout against Toronto in his last start, allowed three runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out four.

“He pitched a heck of a ballgame,” Wedge said. “I didn’t want him to face the middle of the order again. He worked pretty hard his last start and we thought that was enough. It didn’t work out — Jamey had another tough night —-but everybody else stepped up and picked him up.”

The Mariners scored just one run in each of the first two games of the series, and White Sox starter Gavin Floyd cruised through the first five innings on Wednesday and extended his scoreless streak against the Mariners to 27 innings.

Seattle finally broke through in the sixth, scoring three runs to snap Floyd’s streak and take a 3-1 lead. Franklin Gutierrez’s two-run double highlighted the inning and Kennedy drove in the other run on a grounder.

That was the last inning for Floyd, who threw six innings and allowed five hits, three runs and three walks and struck out three.

Chicago pulled within a run on Gordon Beckham’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of seventh.

The Mariners tacked on a run in the eighth when Olivo’s homer made it 4-2. Olivo also scored Seattle’s last run, when he came home on Gutierrez’s squeeze bunt in the 10th.

Quentin erased that lead in the bottom of the inning.

“(Quentin) is just a professional hitter,” Vargas said. “He frustrates me as much as I frustrate him. … He puts you in a position where you have to come to him. You just try to keep guys off base for when he comes to the plate.”

The White Sox slugger came in leading the majors in extra-base hits (35) and doubles (20). His eighth-inning homer was his 17th of the season, and gave him 13 career multi-homer games, including three this season.

Chicago got to Vargas in the first inning. Quentin hit a 1-2 pitch into the back of the White Sox bullpen in left field, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

Vargas retired the next nine Chicago batters, before Paul Konerko doubled in the fourth.

“I was pleased with the way I was able to throw the fastball, especially early,” Vargas said. “That kind of set the tone for me.”

NOTES: The White Sox placed RHP Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Monday) with a mild groin strain. Peavy, who left his most recent start after four innings because of the injury, was replaced on the roster by RHP Lucas Harrell, who was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. … Alex Rios was back in the starting lineup on Wednesday after sitting for three games for what White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called a “mental break.” Rios is hitting .199 on the season. … Suzuki played his 1,353rd career game in right field for the Mariners, breaking Jay Buhner’s franchise record. … Jeff Marquez, designated for assignment on June 5 by the White Sox, was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on Wednesday.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

CHICAGO — Sergio Santos knows there will be days like this.

Lucky for him, they are few and far between.

Miguel Olivo drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run double in the 10th inning, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 on Wednesday night.

The Mariners tagged Santos (2-2) with three runs in the 10th, only the second time Santos has yielded a run in 24 appearances this season. He gave up four runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 20. The right-hander has a 2.10 ERA this season.

“I felt good and I felt strong, I just didn’t feel sharp,” Santos said. “I didn’t feel like I had a good feel for any of my pitches except the changeup. You have to fight through it and find a way.”

Justin Smoak started the winning rally with a leadoff bloop double. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen ironically had the outfield playing deep in order to prevent any extra-base hits.

“You don’t complain when they hit a ball close to the wall when you’re playing no doubles and they catch it. It’s part of the game,” Santos said. “I could have helped myself out and thrown more strikes and gotten pitches over for strikes. I didn’t help myself out at all and just didn’t have it today. They put the bat on the ball and they scored.”

Adam Kennedy walked, then Olivo — who had a solo homer in the eighth against his former team — drove in both runners with a grounder just inside third base and into the left-field corner.

White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin homered twice, a solo shot in the first off Jason Vargas and a tying two-run shot in the eighth off Jamey Wright.

Quentin homered Tuesday night off Seattle ace Felix Hernandez. He is 13 for 35 with five homers and 13 RBIs during his 10-game hitting streak.

“When Carlos is what he is right now, he can carry a ballclub for a little while,” Guillen said. “He’s been swinging the bat pretty good for a few days. It’s fun to see him not swing at that many bad pitches.”

Aaron Laffey (1-1) threw a scoreless inning to earn the win and Brandon League pitched a perfect 10th for his AL-leading 17th save.

Vargas allowed three runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out four.

“He’s got four pitches and he can command them all,” Chicago’s Gordon Beckham said. “He was throwing in well and when a lefty can throw in to righties, that means he’s doing pretty well.”

White Sox starter Gavin Floyd cruised until Seattle scored three runs in the sixth. He extended his scoreless streak against the Mariners to 27 innings, but came out after losing the streak and the lead. He threw six innings and allowed five hits, three runs and three walks and struck out three.

Franklin Gutierrez’s two-run double highlighted Seattle’s sixth. Kennedy drove in the other run on a grounder. The Mariners tacked on a run in the eighth when Olivo’s homer made it 4-2.

Seattle finally broke through in the sixth. Brendan Ryan and Smoak started the rally with singles, giving the Mariners runners on the corners with no outs. Kennedy’s grounder brought home Ryan, breaking Floyd’s streak.

Carlos Peguero worked Floyd for a walk, then Gutierrez’s double to left gave Seattle a 3-1 lead.

Chicago trimmed the advantage to one on Beckham’s two-out single in the bottom of seventh, which scored Brent Lillibridge.

NOTES: The White Sox placed RHP Jake Peavy on the 15-day DL (retroactive to Monday) with a mild groin strain. Peavy, who left his most recent start after four innings because of the injury, was replaced on the roster by RHP Lucas Harrell, who was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. … The Mariners recalled Carp from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday and optioned OF Mike Wilson to Tacoma. Mariners manager Eric Wedge said that he expects to play Carp 3-4 times a week. … Alex Rios was back in the starting lineup on Wednesday after sitting for three games for what White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called a “mental break.” Rios is hitting .199. … Ichiro Suzuki played his 1,353rd career game in right field for the Mariners, breaking Jay Buhner’s franchise record. … White Sox reliever Jeff Marquez, who was designated for assignment on June 5, was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on Wednesday.

Gotta run!.

Maybe he has one good at-bat a game. … He’s having good at-bats, says manager Ozzie Guillen. (Chris Carlson/Associated Press)

The Chicago White Sox continue to be puzzled by the woes of Alex Rios. Perhaps he will show signs of life against his former team, judging by how he fared versus the Toronto Blue Jays last season.

Coming off their first series loss in nearly a month, the White Sox hope Rios will start to get untracked in the opener of a four-game set in Toronto on Thursday at 7:07 p.m. ET.

Chicago (23-28) lost two of three in Texas, falling 2-1 on Wednesday. The White Sox had won five series and split the other one since getting swept in two games by Minnesota from May 3-4.

Rios went 0-for-4 on Wednesday to drop his average to .165 on the road. Chicago is having trouble figuring out the problems of the outfielder, who finished second on the team with 88 runs batted in and third with 21 homers in 2010.

“That’s the question we ask every day,” manager Ozzie Guillen told the White Sox’s official website. “Maybe he has one good at-bat a game. He’s practicing, he’s having good at-bats.”

Chicago acquired Rios off waivers from Toronto (24-25) on Aug. 10, 2009. He did not get the chance to face his former team until 2010, when he hit safely in all eight meetings with a .382 average, three homers and five RBIs.

The White Sox went 3-5 against the Blue Jays last year after going 2-13 over the previous two. Chicago had lost 10 straight at Rogers Centre before splitting four games April 12-15, 2010.

Last season, Chicago was the only American League team that major league home run leader Jose Bautista failed to go deep against. Bautista went 5-for-27 with 10 walks in the series.

Bautista slump

The slugger is mired in a 6-for-27 slump over his last eight games after going 1-for-3 in Wednesday’s 7-3 road loss to the Yankees.

“When it comes to my at-bats, I should have done a better job,” Bautista said. “I failed twice with men in scoring position.”

Bautista has never faced Phil Humber (3-3, 3.10 earned-run average), who will start Thursday and leads all Chicago starters with a .191 opponent batting average. The right-hander yielded two runs over seven innings Friday in a 6-4, 10-inning loss to the Dodgers.

Humber has never started against the Blue Jays, allowing four runs in 2 1/3 innings over two appearances.

He’ll be opposed by Brandon Morrow (2-2, 5.06), who is 0-1 with an 8.38 ERA in two career starts versus the White Sox. Rios is 2-for-9 with five strikeouts against Morrow.

The right-hander did not receive a decision after allowing season highs of four runs and nine hits over six-plus innings in a 7-5 victory over Houston on Saturday.

Adam Dunn will likely be back in Chicago’s lineup after not starting Wednesday against left-hander C.J. Wilson. He’s batting .191 with a major league-high 61 strikeouts.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

ARLINGTON, Texas – C.J. Wilson pitched into the seventh inning, Ian Kinsler’s RBI single produced the go-ahead run, and the Texas Rangers hung on to beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Wednesday.

Wilson (5-3) gave up one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings to help the Rangers win for the third time in four games. The left-hander struck out five.

Neftali Feliz issued consecutive one-out walks in the ninth, but got A.J. Pierzynski to fly out with runners on first and third for his 10th save in 12 chances as Texas took the deciding game of the three-game series.

Wilson gave up a single to Juan Pierre leading off the game, then recorded the next 16 outs before Gordon Beckham’s one-out single in the sixth.

Brent Morel, the next batter, bounced into a double play.

Wilson carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh before the White Sox broke through.

Chicago put runners on first and third on one-out singles by Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin. Paul Konerko’s RBI single ended the shutout bid, and ended Wilson’s 103-pitch outing.

Reliever Mark Lowe got Alex Rios to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The White Sox threatened again in the eighth with runners on first and third and one out. Lefty Darren Oliver came on to strike out pinch hitter Adam Dunn, and retire Pierre on a forceout.

Both teams had reasons to be tired.

The game got under way less than 12 hours after the White Sox earned an 8-6 victory in a game that started early Tuesday night and ended at 1:27 Wednesday morning following a rain delay of almost three hours.

Those storms passed through the area, and Wednesday’s game was played under sunny skies.

In the third inning on Wednesday, David Murphy’s leadoff grounder off Gavin Floyd (5-4) kicked off the glove of Beckham at second base for an error, and Murphy took third on Yorvit Torrealba’s ground-rule double.

Murphy came home on Mitch Moreland’s sacrifice fly, and Kinsler followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Floyd allowed two runs and three hits with five strikeouts and one walk in seven-plus innings and 110 pitches.

NOTES: Rangers CF Julio Borbon won’t be cleared to test his tender hamstring until Friday at the earliest. Borbon, on the 15-day DL with left hamstring inflammation, has to run the bases and in the outfield before he can move on to a minor league rehab assignment. Borbon will need at least 20 minor league at-bats before he’s ready to return to the majors. … The White Sox have six starters for what’s traditionally a five-man rotation, and that’s the kind of math that can give a manager headaches. The six-man setup probably will be history when the 10-game road trip ends June 1. The Sox have two days off scheduled in the first two weeks in June. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he’s not worried about hurting anyone’s feelings when he has to inform one of his pitchers that he’ll be moving to the bullpen. “It’s not about one guy,” Guillen said. “It’s about the ballclub. I have a job to do, and that’s to do what’s best for the team.” … Guillen held Dunn out of the starting lineup despite Dunn’s homer on Tuesday night. Prior to that, Dunn had been in a 3-for-33 slump. … Pierre stretched his hitting streak to 10 games.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — After the White Sox could scarcely catch a break during the first nine innings, Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen handed quite a gift to them in the extra frame of a remarkable comeback victory for Chicago.

Alexei Ramirez scored the tiebreaking run from third base when Jepsen threw a wild pitch during an intentional walk in the 10th inning, and the White Sox rallied from a late three-run deficit for a 6-4 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

Adam Dunn homered among his career-high four hits and scored on Brent Lillibridge’s sacrifice fly moments after Jepsen (0-2) inexplicably sailed a throw over the head of catcher Hank Conger, who had stood up while the Angels intentionally walked Paul Konerko.

We needed that,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “Early in the game, we left a lot of people on base. We got a few opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of, but late in the game, we got some big hits. The energy in the dugout was great, especially the last three innings.”

The White Sox stranded a season-high 15 runners, but scored five runs in the final three innings of an energizing win. After their rough April, they weren’t too proud to claim a gift go-ahead run while winning back-to-back series for the first time this season.

“We just couldn’t get that big hit to open it up,” Dunn said. “When we got to the eighth down 4-1, we could have just packed it up, but we kept coming after it, and finally got it. Today was just one of those days when there was a lot of weird stuff going on.”

The late fireworks overshadowed the return of Jake Peavy, who gave up seven hits and four runs over six innings for Chicago in his first game back from a 10-month absence for major shoulder surgery.

Omar Vizquel had an RBI double in the eighth inning and a tying sacrifice fly in the ninth for the White Sox. A.J. Pierzynski also had four hits and drove in a run during Chicago’s ninth-inning rally against Angels closer Jordan Walden, who blew his second save chance.

Jepsen then struggled in his first appearance since getting recalled from triple-A Salt Lake earlier Wednesday following a monthlong banishment to the minors for a poor start to the season.

The veteran reliever leaned back in his chair and sighed when asked about the wildest of wild pitches.

“I threw it about 10 feet too high,” Jepsen said. “Just sailed it. Sometimes on an intentional walk, you can take it too easy, I guess. That shouldn’t happen. That’s the first time I’ve ever done that.”

The Angels’ bullpen had been fairly solid this season, with the club going 18-1 when leading after eight innings — until this wholesale collapse, capped by a pitch that’s likely to be a staple of blooper reels for a while.

“I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen that,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “It might be the first time I’ve seen that.”

Sergio Santos (2-0) allowed one hit over two innings in his 13th straight scoreless appearance to start the season for Chicago. Matt Thornton pitched the 10th for his first save.

Torii Hunter tripled and drove in two runs for the Angeles, while Erick Aybar and Alberto Callaspo had RBI singles. Rookie Tyler Chatwood repeatedly escaped jams while pitching into the seventh inning, but his relievers found nothing but trouble.

Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young award winner, looked good in his first appearance since July 6, 2010, when he detached a muscle in his right shoulder while facing the Angels. The two-time All-Star led the majors in ERA in 2004 and 2007, also leading the majors in strikeouts that year.

“I thought I had pretty good stuff tonight, and plenty of stuff to compete at this level and expect to win,” said Peavy, activated from the disabled list earlier Wednesday after five rehabilitation starts in the minors. “I just didn’t catch any breaks, but I’m as excited as I can be to go out there and compete with the boys. I threw some bad breaking balls tonight, but I know it’s going to get better as time goes on.”

Vizquel’s double off Fernando Rodney in the eighth trimmed the Angels’ lead to 4-2, but Ramirez was called out moments later with two runners on. Guillen vehemently argued the call by plate umpire Dan Bellino, who said Ramirez got in Conger’s way when Vizquel attempted to steal third.

But the White Sox rallied in the ninth against Walden, who walked Dunn on four pitches to lead it off. After Carlos Quentin and Pierzynski singled and Alex Rios walked, Vizquel’s fly to centre easily scored Quentin.

Notes: Vizquel replaced Chicago 3B Mark Teahen, who left in the seventh inning with a mild strain of his right oblique muscle. … Before the game, Los Angeles placed RHP Francisco Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder soreness and recalled Jepsen. … Chicago first base coach Harold Baines missed the game for personal reasons. Mike Gellinger filled in for him.
