KSBY Sports continues its countdown of the top 11 local sports stories of 2011. Our second nominee is the Chicago White Sox decision to hire Arroyo Grande resident Robin Ventura as its 39th manager in club history.

The news broke on October 5 and culminated with an introduction in the Windy City on the 11th. The Righetti High graduate returned to a White Sox uniform, sporting number 23 like he did for the first ten seasons of his 16 year Major League career. Tuesday, the 44 year old officially the 39th manager in franchise history. “Being where I was and being able to do this for a franchise that I love and for people that are in the organization that I love, I’m confident and I’m excited about being able to do this,” said Ventura. “Obviously I’m overjoyed about the opportunity to wear a White Sox uniform and to be the manager is an honor and I’m humbled to be able to do it.”

The press conference came barely four months after Robin was hired as a special advisor to the team that ended his six year absence from the major leagues. Ventura spent that time with his family living in Arroyo Grande. Robin sees his break as a strength because he is able to look at the game from the outside. “I’ve lived life and I’ve enjoyed it. But I’ve also enjoyed baseball and I think that helps me to be able to see beyond whether a guy got a hit or not,” added Ventura.

White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams said Robin was always at the top of his list because of his integrity, character and knowledge for the game. Despite this being Ventura’s first managerial job, the six-time gold glove third baseman is confident he can go from the hot corner to the hot seat.

Ventura is the 17th former White Sox player to become the team’s manager. The White Sox went 79-83 last season and are six years removed from a World Series title.

The White Sox open the 2012 season April 6 at the home of the Texas Rangers.

KSBY will unveil one story every day. Once all eleven nominees are announced, the public will be allowed to vote on the top local sports story of 2011.

Qualifiers: players will be classified under one position even if they played at more than one. They must also have at least two seasons as the team’s primary starter at the position.

Eddie Collins:

One of the greatest offensive second basemen in Major League history, Hall of Famer Eddie Collins starred for the Chicago White Sox from 1915 to 1930. Collins demonstrated phenomenal contact skills, plate patience and speed en route to career totals of 3,315 hits, 741 stolen bases, 1,821 runs scored and 1,499 walks in 25 Major League seasons. He remains one of three White Sox position players with more than 60 WAR (wins above replacement) and totaled 126.7 WAR in his career, the tenth highest of all-time. Collins, who led the White Sox to the 1917 World Series Championship and won two others with the Philadelphia Athletics, ranks second in both batting average (.331) and on-base percentage (.426) in White Sox history.

Nellie Fox:

Hall of Fame second baseman Nellie Fox was an elite contact hitter and defensive great for the White Sox from 1950 to 1963. Fox stepped to the plate more than 10,000 times in his career and struck out only 216 times; he owns the sixth lowest strikeout rate in MLB history with just one in every 42.7 at-bats. He sits second in White Sox history with 2,470 hits, shares the team record with 104 triples and ranks fourth with 42.7 WAR. Fox won the 1959 AL MVP while leading the White Sox to the World Series. He went to a dozen All-Star Games and earned three Gold Gloves.

Ray Durham:

Two-time All-Star Ray Durham gave the White Sox great production from the leadoff spot for eight years. After his 1995 rookie season, Durham batted .280 with a .356 OBP, 105 OPS+ (league average is 100) and averages of 15 homers and 30 steals per year for the White Sox. He racked up 1,246 hits with the Sox and 2,054 in his 14-year career. His impressive output from a typically light-hitting position netted him an average of 3.2 offensive WAR per year in Chicago.

Jorge Orta:

Former All-Star second baseman Jorge Orta spent the first-half of his career in Chicago’s infield in the 1970s. Orta was an above-average all-around hitter for 990 games with the White Sox. He batted .281 with a .338 OBP, .418 slugging percentage and 112 OPS+. His bat averaged 2.5 WAR per year and peaked at 4.2 in 1974. Orta twice batted over .300 and totaled 1,002 hits over eight seasons in Chicago.

Jackie Hayes:

Jackie Hayes played out the prime of his career in the White Sox’s infield in the 1930s. Hayes was a well regarded defensive player at second and a pure contact hitter with little pop. He batted as high as .312 in 1936 and regularly walked more than he struck out, drawing 266 walks against only 188 strikeouts in 809 games. He maintained a .264 average and .324 OBP in Chicago.

It’s unclear exactly how the Chicago Cubs are going to approach this offseason yet under the new front office led by Theo Epstein, but they’ve already had multiple discussions with the agent for former White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the team has spoken with Jeff Berry, Buehrle’s agent, multiple times recently.

If the money is right, Buehrle would certainly be a fit for the Cubs given their need for pitching. It’s unclear how much Carlos Zambrano will be able to contribute next season, if at all, so they really only have three established starters right now in Ryan Dempster, Matt Garza and Randy Wells.

Buehrle would give them a dependable lefty and a steady veteran presence, although the team should be worried about how his contact-oriented approach would work against a defense that was pretty bad last season. There’s a chance that the move from the more difficult American League to the National League would alleviate some of those concerns, though, especially for someone with such a long track record.

Central Coast native Robin Ventura continues to build his initial coaching staff with the Chicago White Sox.

The Righetti High graduate and current Arroyo Grande resident was named the 39th manager in Chicago White Sox history on October 6. Ventura spent the previous six years out of professional baseball before he joined the White Sox as a special advisor in June. Ventura hit .267 with 294 home runs and 1,182 RBI in his 16 year Major League career. He earned six Gold Gloves and was a two-time All-Star.

Monday, the White Sox announced Joe McEwing as the new third base coach, Jeff Manto as the team’s hitting coach and Mark Parent as Ventura’s bench coach. Manto is the only one out of the bunch with prior MLB coaching experience. He was the hitting coach for the Pirates in 2006-07.

Manto has served as the White Sox minor league hitting coordinator for the last four years. McEwing joined the organization in 2008 as the Triple-A hitting coach and had managerial stints at Class A and Triple-A.

Parent managed the team’s Double-A club in 2011.

Pitching coach Don Cooper, who agreed to a four-year extension at the end of the 2011 campaign, first-base coach Harold Baines, bullpen coach Juan Nieves, assistant hitting coach Mike Gellinger, bullpen catcher Mark Salas and batting practice pitcher Kevin Hickey will return to fill out Ventura’s staff in 2012.

That’s all for today.

The Chicago White Sox officially introduced Central Coast native Robin Ventura on Tuesday as the team’s new manager. The Arroyo Grande resident said he was humbled and honored with the position, and vowed to be himself.

“I think later in my career it was something that was evident I felt that I could do it. And I still feel confident that I can do it.”

Ventura played for a list of managers that includes Bobby Valentine, Jim Tracy and Joe Torre. He plans to use his experiences with them in his new role. He said he received plenty of congratulatory calls from former teammates and veterans over the last few days. “The best piece of advice is be yourself and that’s going to be pretty simple for me because I don’t plan on changing a whole lot.”

One could say it is the start of the next chapter in Ventura’s South Side Story.

Ventura is the 17th former White Sox player to become the team’s manager. The White Sox went 79-83 last season and are six years removed from a World Series title.

The White Sox open the 2012 season April 6 at the home of the Texas Rangers.

Konerko joined the White Sox in 1999, after Ventura finished a 10-year run as Chicago’s third baseman in 1998. Though they just missed being teammates, Konerko said he’s gotten to know Ventura a bit over the years at team functions.

And he’s convinced that Ventura’s lack of managerial experience won’t be a hindrance once he gets rolling.

“As far as how a clubhouse runs and all that kinds of stuff, I don’t think there is any concern,” konerko said. “Robin Ventura has been in a clubhouse most of his whole life. I think most of the older players are looking forward to it as far as conversing with him and picking his brain at what he thinks makes a good team.”

And, if Ventura needs help during the game, he’ll be able to delegate, especially with veteran pitching coach Don Cooper returning with a multiyear extension, as well as first base coach Harold Baines.

Ventura’s style, once it develops, will almost certainly be different than that of Guillen, the outspoken — often outrageous — skipper who led the team to its first World Series in 88 years in 2005.

Guillen, who had his request for an extension denied, was released from the final year on his contract after eight seasons and will be running the Marlins next season. Guillen also had no managerial experience when he was hired after serving as Florida’s third base coach during its World Series championship run in 2003.

Ventura has not been a major league coach, although he was hired in June to be an advisor to player development director Buddy Bell.

Ventura was a popular player with the White Sox before completing his career with the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers. He’s returning to the organization that drafted him in the first round in 1988.

Konerko characterized the 44-year-old Ventura as an easy person to talk to but added that, from stories he’s heard over the years, the new White Sox manager is not afraid to stand up or confront someone. After all, he did charge the mound against Nolan Ryan in 1993.

And he doesn’t expect Ventura to be shy about expressing what he feels — even if it’s not as in the same outlandish manner as Guillen.

“Just in talking to people who played with him and all that, I think he’ll be the kind of guy, like Ozzie, who will call you out on a carpet in front of people and be a little bit more abrasive than everybody thinks,” Konerko said.

It’s still not clear whether the White Sox with change its approach with Ventura as manager and try to slice payroll and use more young players after last year’s 79-83 disappointment.

The 35-year-old Konerko, who batted .300 last season with 31 homers and 105 RBIs, has two more seasons left on a three-year, $37.5 million deal. He said he understands if the team decided to go in that direction, adding that Ventura could perhaps help some of the younger players develop.

He also expects Ventura, who was a little apprehensive when first approached about the job by general manager Ken Williams, to have a plan mapped out by spring training.

“Robin is close to the organization. He’s been closer the last few months and been involved a little bit more doing some stuff,” Konerko said. “I think he knows what he’s getting himself into and I think he knows what is going on. … He’s not coming into this blind.”

The White Sox don’t plan to go through a long process that goes through the start of the offseason trying to find a manager. The next manager could be named before the World Series gets underway, Williams said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

A leading candidate is “thought to be” Cleveland Indians first-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr., who had three different stints with the team during his playing days, the paper reports. Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez is also a possibility and a major-league source tells the paper that Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona is being considered as well.

The Sun-Times notes that Francona’s contract is up this year and the Red Sox have options to sign him next season for $4.25 million and $4.5 million in 2013. After the historic collapse the Red Sox just went through, Boston may let Francona loose.

The Chicago White Sox are looking ahead to 2012.

The Chicago White Sox are looking ahead to 2012. Adam Dunn(notes) would surely like
to forget this year.

Dunn and the White Sox try to conclude a difficult season on a positive note
Wednesday, when they look to sweep a three-game home series from the Toronto
Blue Jays for the first time in 16 years.

Chicago (79-82) is finishing with a losing record for the third time in five
seasons, and will undergo a managerial search after releasing Ozzie Guillen from
his contract Monday. Guillen is expected to take the helm of the Florida
Marlins.

The White Sox won their first game without Guillen on Tuesday, beating
Toronto 2-1 in what might be ace Mark Buehrle’s(notes) last game with Chicago. He can
become a free agent after the season.

“They have a lot of decisions to make, a lot of pieces they can trade, a lot
of guys they can get back,” Buehrle said.

Chicago has a chance to sweep three games from the Blue Jays at home for the
first time since winning three contests Sept. 1-3, 1995.

Dunn hasn’t done much to help the White Sox achieve that feat, striking out
in all five of his at-bats in this series.

The designated hitter is in an 0-for-22 slump as the worst season of his
career comes to an end. Despite going 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs in his
White Sox debut on opening day, Dunn has a .159 average with 11 homers and 42
RBIs.

His 177 strikeouts broke a team record that had stood since 1963. He is
unlikely to eclipse Rob Deer’s record .179 average in 1991 as the worst
qualifying batting average, as he needs six plate appearances.

Dunn, who vowed last week to “never talk about it again” after this season
is over, doesn’t appear to have a good chance to raise his average in the
finale. He is 1 for 19 with 13 strikeouts against Toronto (80-81).

Phillip Humber (9-9, 3.86 ERA) has been enduring his own issues of late,
going 1-5 with a 6.15 ERA in his last 10 starts. The right-hander is 0-1 with a
9.00 ERA in his most recent two outings.

“It’s frustrating,” Humber told the team’s official website. “It’s probably
a good lesson for me learning to deal with adversity. I obviously want to finish
the season strong, but at the same time, I can’t try too hard.”

Humber allowed one run in 7 2-3 innings but didn’t get the decision in a 3-1
win over the Blue Jays on May 26, his only career start versus Toronto.

The Blue Jays’ Brandon Morrow(notes) (11-11, 4.78) will try to continue his longest
shutout streak as a starter. The right-hander has won back-to-back starts while
tossing 15 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out 17.

The dazzling stretch has followed a dismal five games in which he went 0-4
with a 9.47 ERA.

Morrow held Tampa Bay to two hits and struck out nine in seven innings of a
5-1 road victory Friday.

“I’m trying to finish strong,” Morrow told the team’s official website.
“It’s a little frustrating to come to it now, but like I said, when you go
through that (rough) stretch all you can do is learn from it. That’s what I
tried to do and I think I came to the realization that that’s the approach I’m
going to take.”

Morrow is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts against the White Sox. He
opposed Humber in May and yielded one run in seven innings, not getting a
decision.

            Updated Aug 26, 2011 1:00 AM ET

Twins designated hitter Jim Thome was claimed on waivers by the Indians and has accepted a trade to Cleveland.

Meanwhile, outfielder Jason Kubel was claimed by the Chicago White Sox, according to major-league sources.

A claim does not mean that a player will change teams. The Twins still can keep Kubel.

Thome spent 12 seasons with Cleveland from 1991 to 2002, hitting a team-record 334 homers and helping the Indians get to two World Series. He hit 52 in his final season before signing as a free agent with Philadelphia, a decision that angered many Indians fans who will have to welcome him back.

”He’s excited,” Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. ”He’s fired up to come back and join the team. I am hopeful and confident that fans will embrace him wearing an Indians uniform again. He’s not only an exceptional player but a person as well. Even if he wasn’t a person that hit 600 home runs, he’s just a great person.”

Thome holds a full no-trade clause and could have rejected any deal. He prefered the Phillies to the Indians, one source said, but it’s doubtful he could circumvent the waiver process to land with Philadelphia.

Kubel, meanwhile, is unlikely to be traded, sources said. The Twins likely would offer him arbitration in an attempt to re-sign him, and would want the equivalent of at least a high draft pick in return. The Twins must decide on Kubel by 1 p.m. ET Friday.

The Indians are six games out in the AL Central, the White Sox 6 1/2 out. Thome may fit well in Cleveland. The Indians are without designated hitter Travis Hafner, who is on the disabled list with a strained right foot.

”We will have to manage his playing time,” Antonetti said. ”He’s certainly not an everyday player at this point. We’ll work with Jim on this. We’d like to have him out there to impact the team as often as we can. Every game for the team is meaningful. We are trying to win as many games as possible and we’ll see where that takes us.”

The White Sox are missing right fielder Carlos Quentin, who is battling a shoulder problem.

The only way for Thome could have gotten to the Phillies would be if the Twins pulled him off trade waivers and placed him on release waivers. Thome could then have rejected every team that claimed him but the Phillies.

Such a ploy, however, would have required Thome to forfeit the rest of his salary, about $500,000. It also would have required the cooperation of the Twins, who would receive nothing in return for their popular slugger.

Rival clubs almost certainly would have protested such a manipulation of the waiver process. Thome, who recently hit his 600th home run, might even have suffered a hit to his image.

”There’s no question it’s a bittersweet deal,” Twins GM Bill Smith said. ”But there’s also no question this is the right thing to do for Jim Thome.

”He is all the superlative things that we knew we were getting when he came here two years ago. At this point in his Hall-of-Fame career, this is the right thing for him.”

Kubel, who is owed about $900,000, has talked with the Twins about a possible contract extension. Both he and Thome are eligible for free agency at the end of the season.

Deborah Theobald, 33, alleges in the lawsuit that in spite of stellar performance throughout her eight-year career with White Sox, she was routinely passed over for "upper management positions."
A woman who once worked for the Chicago White Sox has filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit against the team and Major League Baseball alleging she was passed over for promotions because of her gender.

Deborah Theobald, 33, alleges in the lawsuit that in spite of stellar performance throughout her eight-year career with White Sox, she was routinely passed over for “upper management positions.”

In 2004, when Theobald applied for the job of manager of partnerships, the White Sox opted to promote a “less qualified male,” according to the complaint, which was filed in Cook County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit alleges she also was passed over in favor of less qualified men when she sought the job of senior manager of premium seating in 2008 and again in 2010.

“Plaintiff, a female, reported to a male supervisor, manager or director, who reported to a male supervisor or vice president, who, in turn, reported to a male executive vice president or Jerry Reinsdorf, male, and chairman of the White Sox,” the lawsuit states.

Referencing “the glass ceiling and intentional sexual discriminatory policies and practices” of both the White Sox and MLB, the lawsuit alleges that women are denied equal opportunity to “advancement or promotion to upper management and officer positions.”

Theobald quit her job with the White Sox in June 2010.

She is represented in the lawsuit by her father, Edward Theobald, who declined to comment Thursday. The White Sox also declined to comment, citing the team’s policy against talking about active litigation.

Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday.

Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday.

De Aza, who was called up earlier in the day to fill a roster spot opened by a trade, connected against Scherzer (11-6) in the second, hitting an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right for his first major league homer.

“I didn’t throw it with 100 percent conviction, I don’t know why,” Scherzer said. “Because the next time I faced him, I threw with 100 percent conviction and I was able to execute like I wanted.

“I made one mistake and it cost me.”

Austin Jackson hit a leadoff homer in the seventh, but that was it for Detroit against John Danks (4-8) and two relievers.

The Tigers got plenty of runners aboard against Danks but couldn’t convert, registering just one hit in nine chances with runners in scoring position — a single that loaded the bases. Detroit left nine runners on base.

“With runners in scoring position, you want to come through for your team,” Jackson said. “Once (Danks) got runners in scoring position, he got really nasty.”

Danks (4-8), who left after Jackson’s fifth homer, matched a career high with 10 strikeouts while improving to 4-0 with a sparkling 0.98 ERA in his last six starts. The left-hander allowed six hits and walked three.

“Danks was tremendous. He had his cutter going, really nasty,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “Not that it was easy to get him, because it wasn’t, but the thing that frustrates you a little bit is when you have opportunity after opportunity. If you just take one or two hits in that game, you might have three or four runs.”

Chris Sale replaced Danks and worked 2 2-3 perfect innings before Sergio Santos got the last out for his 21st save in 24 chances.

Scherzer struck out eight in six innings, yielding six hits and four walks.

“I was able to battle through six innings and keep them from scoring again. I gave the team a chance to win, we just didn’t execute today,” he said. “It’s always frustrating when you can look at a start and narrow it down to one pitch.”

The White Sox closed within 3½ games of Detroit in the AL Central, a threshold Chicago has reached, but not surpassed, since mid-April. The Tigers fell to 23-13 against AL Central opponents, still the best intradivision record in the league.

Alexei Ramirez had a one-out walk ahead of De Aza’s homer in his 195th at-bat in the majors. The speedy center fielder had previous stints with the White Sox and Florida Marlins.

De Aza was called up from Triple-A Charlotte after the White Sox traded starting pitcher Edwin Jackson and utilityman Mark Teahen to the Toronto Blue Jays for reliever Jason Frasor and pitching prospect Zach Stewart.

“Right on time. In the right place in the right time,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said of De Aza’s arrival. “We liked him in spring training. We didn’t have space for him on the 25-man roster, but I think he’s going to see some playing time. Hopefully, he can help us.”

That’s all the news for today.

(Sports Network) – The Minnesota Twins try to continue their recent mastery of
the Chicago White Sox this evening when the American League Central foes open
a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Twins have beaten the White Sox all four times the teams have met this
season and have won seven straight, including the last six in the Windy City.
Going back even further, the Twins have won 26 of the last 32 meetings.

Minnesota was denied a three-game sweep in its series with the Tampa Bay Rays
on Wednesday, falling 12-5 in the finale at Target Field. Michael Cuddyer
hit a solo homer and knocked in three runs for the Twins, who went 6-3 on a
nine-game homestand.

“We got to get out there and try to win every series we can,” Cuddyer said.

Minnesota starter Francisco Liriano allowed five runs on six hits over 4 1/3
innings. Alex Burnett (2-5) gave up four runs on four hits over 1 1/3 frames
to suffer the loss.

Heading to the hill for the Twins tonight will be right-hander Carl Pavano,
who is 5-6 with a 4.19 ERA. Pavano did not get a decision on Saturday against
Milwaukee, as he allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits in 7 2/3
innings of his team’s 8-7 loss.

Pavano went the distance to beat the White Sox the last time he faced them and
is 7-3 lifetime against them with a 3.57 ERA in 10 starts.

Chicago will counter with righty Philip Humber, who has won six of his last
seven decisions. Humber’s latest win came on Saturday against the Cubs, as he
scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings to improve to 8-4, while
lowering his ERA to 2.69.

This will be Humber’s first start against the Twins.

Chicago comes into tonight’s series following losses in three of its last four
games after a 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

Edwin Jackson (5-7) yielded four runs on eight hits over seven innings to take
the loss.

“At the end of the day, my job is to keep the game close,” Jackson said.
“Regardless of how the game starts I have to keep the team within striking
distance.”

ARLINGTON, Texas — Gavin Floyd pitched well enough to win. Lack of offensive support proved his undoing today against Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas — Gavin Floyd pitched well enough to win. Lack of offensive support proved his undoing today against Texas.

Floyd allowed only three hits, but his teammates went 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position as the Texas Rangers earned a 2-1 decision over the Chicago White Sox.

Floyd allowed two runs with five strikeouts and one walk in seven-plus innings and 110 pitches, but Texas starter C.J. Wilson was a little better.

Texas’ three hits matched the fewest for the team in a victory in the 18-year history of Rangers Ballpark, but Floyd wasn’t pointing any fingers at the faltering White Sox offense.

“We’re all fighting out there,” Floyd said. “Their pitcher pitched real well. We had a couple of innings when we were grinding it out, trying to produce runs, but it just didn’t happen today. Our offense is good enough to put up a lot of runs. I just want to keep the team in the game. To be able to achieve that against a lineup like this … I’ll take it out there again next time.”

Teammates knew they’d wasted an outstanding effort from Floyd (5-4).

“You’re going to have games like that,” Chicago outfielder Juan Pierre said. “But when we get a pitching performance by Gavin like that, we’ve got to score more. He has top-five stuff in the league with his curve and his cutter. He can do that every time he goes out there. He had such a good performance today, but we couldn’t muster any runs.”

Wilson (5-3) lasted into the seventh inning, and Ian Kinsler’s RBI single produced the go-ahead run for the Rangers.

Wilson allowed one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings to help Texas win for the third time in four games. The left-hander struck out five.

Both teams had reasons to be tired. The White Sox had earned an 8-6 victory in a game that started early Tuesday night and ended at 1:27 Wednesday morning following a rain delay of almost three hours.

Stormy weather passed through the area, and Wednesday’s game was played under sunny skies.

Neftali Feliz issued consecutive one-out walks in the ninth, but got A.J. Pierzynski to fly out with runners on first and third for his 10th save in 12 chances as Texas took the deciding game of the three-game series.

Wilson gave up a single to Pierre leading off the game, then recorded the next 16 outs before Gordon Beckham’s one-out single in the sixth.

Brent Morel, the next batter, bounced into a double play.

Wilson carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh before the White Sox broke through.

Chicago put runners on first and third on one-out singles by Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin. Paul Konerko’s RBI single ended the shutout bid, and ended Wilson’s 103-pitch outing.

Reliever Mark Lowe got Alex Rios to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The White Sox threatened again in the eighth with runners on first and third and one out. Lefty Darren Oliver came on to strike out pinch hitter Adam Dunn, and retire Pierre on a forceout.

In the third inning, David Murphy’s leadoff grounder kicked off the glove of Beckham at second base for an error, and Murphy took third on Yorvit Torrealba’s ground-rule double. Beckham ended a string of 299 consecutive chances and 60 games without an error.

Murphy came home on Mitch Moreland’s sacrifice fly, and Kinsler followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Even with Floyd on top of his game, that was all the offense the Rangers would need.

“When you pitch that well against a lineup like that with no holes in it you’ve done well,” Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. “Gavin was very good and when I wanted to go to the bullpen, they did a good job.”

		NOTES
The White Sox have six starters for what’s traditionally a five-man rotation, and that’s the kind of math that can give a manager headaches. The six-man setup probably will be history when the 10-game road trip ends June 1. The Sox have two days off scheduled in the first two weeks in June. Guillen said he’s not worried about hurting anyone’s feelings when he has to inform one of his pitchers that he’ll be moving to the bullpen. “It’s not about one guy,” Guillen said. “It’s about the ballclub. I have a job to do, and that’s to do what’s best for the team.” … Guillen held Dunn out of the starting lineup despite Dunn’s homer on Tuesday night. Prior to that, Dunn had been in a 3-for-33 slump. … Pierre stretched his hitting streak to 10 games.
