Alexei Ramirez’s seventh-inning single broke the game’s final tie and led Chicago to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, giving the White Sox a split of the day-night doubleheader.

Asdrubal Cabrera’s solo home run and six strong innings from Fausto Carmona gave Cleveland a 4-3 win in the first game.

The teams, who were eliminated from the AL Central race last week when Detroit clinched the division, are battling for second place. The Indians lead the White Sox by 1 1/2 games.

Matt Thornton (2-5) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win in the second game and Chris Sale went the final 1 2/3 innings for his seventh save.

Cleveland took a 4-3 lead into the seventh before Chicago rallied against rookie reliever Zach Putnam (0-1). Tyler Flowers started the rally with a single and took third on Gordon Beckham’s third double of the game. Juan Pierre’s groundout tied the game before Ramirez’s bloop single to center over a drawn-in infield gave Chicago the lead.

Both teams started rookies in the second game. Dylan Axelrod, making his second major-league start, allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings for the White Sox while Zach McAllister, in his third big-league start, gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings for the Indians.

Cleveland managed one hit off Axelrod through three innings before scoring four times in the fourth. Jim Thome’s RBI single gave Cleveland the lead. Matt LaPorta’s run-scoring double and sacrifice flies by Grady Sizemore and Jack Hannahan completed the scoring.

Singles by Jason Donald and Carlos Santana started the inning. Thome singled sharply past a diving Paul Konerko at first base to score Donald. After Shelley Duncan walked to load the bases, Sizemore’s fly ball to left was deep enough to score Santana.

LaPorta’s line drive to right was misjudged by Dayan Viciedo, who got a bad jump and broke back too late to make the catch. Hannahan’s fly ball to center scored the inning’s final run.

McAllister held the White Sox scoreless until the fifth when Beckham’s RBI double scored Chicago’s first run. Alejandro De Aza’s two-run double off Rafael Perez in the sixth cut the lead to one.

Cleveland’s pitchers hit three Chicago batters in the second game.

Cabrera strained his back while batting in the eighth inning of the first game and didn’t play in the second game.

Carmona (7-15) allowed three runs in six innings and won for the first time since Aug. 17.

Travis Hafner and Kosuke Fukudome also homered off Gavin Floyd (12-12), who hasn’t won since Aug. 29.

Hafner’s two-run homer in the first gave Cleveland the lead, but Chicago tied the game in the second on Adam Dunn’s RBI double and Alejandro De Aza’s run-scoring single.

Cabrera’s home run put Cleveland ahead and was his 24th of the season. Cabrera, who entered Saturday’s game against Minnesota in an 0-for-20 slump, has eight hits in his last 13 at-bats.

NOTES: The first game was the makeup of a July 23 rainout at Progressive Field. … White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen says LHP Mark Buehrle will start Wednesday night. Buehrle (11-9, 3.74 ERA) has sore biceps after being hit with a ball in his last start. RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (4-2, 4.56) will start for the Indians. … Guillen played most of his regulars in Tuesday’s first game. … The White Sox are 9-6 against the Indians with three games to play in the season series. … Hannahan was a defensive replacement at third base in the eighth inning of the first game, his first appearance since straining his left calf Sept. 4. He started the second game. … C Lou Marson struck out in all three at-bats. … The Indians are playing nine games in seven days on their final homestand of the season. Cleveland played a makeup game with Seattle on Monday and will play another day-night doubleheader against Minnesota on Saturday. … The Indians recalled RHP Corey Kluber from Triple-A Columbus.

Ozzie Guillen has no shortage of opinions, and Chicago’s outspoken manager has never been afraid to voice them.

So when Guillen says he trash-talked Royals starter Bruce Chen before his team’s game against the Royals on Sunday — and it wouldn’t be the first time — well, it’s not that difficult to believe, is it?

“I told Bruce Chen, ‘We’re going to kick your butt today,’ ” Guillen admitted gleefully, moments after his White Sox’s 10-5 victory at Kauffman Stadium. “I did. Ask him.”

But Chen, who had already spoken to reporters after the game, was long gone, presumably headed home after a loss that snapped the Royals’ seven-game winning streak.

“We were playing good,” Chen said earlier. “I wanted to keep it going.”

It would have been nice to do it against the White Sox, a team he’d held to two runs in 20 innings this season. But Chen, who dropped to 11-8, could not weave his magic again, as the White Sox got nine hits and scored four runs in 5 1/3 innings against him.

“Bruce went out and battled like he always does,” said rookie third baseman Mike Moustakas, who was part of a lineup that collected 15 hits but stranded 12 runners. “We just weren’t able to push those runs across when we needed to.”

After the White Sox took a 4-0 lead in the fourth, it seemed as if the Royals ended every inning with a wasted scoring opportunity. For instance, they cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth with an RBI single by Yamaico Navarro and an RBI grounder by Billy Butler, but White Sox starter John Danks escaped the inning when he got Eric Hosmer to pop out with two on.

The same thing happened in the sixth, when an RBI triple by Johnny Giavotella cut the deficit to one and put the game-tying run on third with no outs. But Danks, 7-12, took control again, retiring the next three batters.

Solo homers by Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski in the seventh off Louis Coleman put the White Sox ahead 6-3, though the Royals cut the deficit to two with an RBI single by Hosmer in the bottom of the inning. However, Jesse Crain and Chris Sale teamed up to strike out the last two batters with two on, preserving the lead.

From there, the White Sox got some help. A two-out RBI single by Konerko made the score 7-4, but left fielder Alex Gordon fielded the ball with a chance to nail Alexei Ramirez — who was racing from first to third — and end the inning. But Navarro, the shortstop, failed to cover the bag, and Pierzynski came up and blasted a three-run homer off Jesse Chavez that put the White Sox ahead 10-4.

“That changed the whole inning,” said Royals manager Ned Yost, referring to Navarro’s failure to cover third. “We get out of there with one run given up instead of four.”

The mistake proved costly in the ninth, when the Royals mounted a rally that included an RBI single by Giavotella that put runners on first and second with only one out.

But the Royals went down with a whimper — as was the custom all game long — as Sergio Santos retired Moustakas and Brayan Peña, clinching the victory for the White Sox, who got the same number of hits as the Royals (15), but got them at key times.

And for Chicago’s outspoken manager, who lambasted his team in July for its continuous struggles against Chen, it was a long overdue result.

“The offense swung the bats good, especially when we faced a guy we couldn’t even touch in the past,” Guillen said.

“It’s about time.”

Pierzynski homered twice among his four hits and drove in four runs as the Chicago White Sox snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Royals on Sunday.

The Royals were looking for their first winning streak of more than seven games since starting the 2003 9-0.

The Royals are hitting .380 on this homestand.

“And we still lost,” Royals manager Ned Yost said of the 15 hits.

Bruce Chen, who broke Pierzynski’s wrist with a pitch on Aug. 12, took the loss. He allowed four runs on nine hits in 5 1-3 innings.

“I like how I was mixing in my pitches well, but unfortunately we didn’t come out with a win,” Chen said. “I’m kinda bummed out that I lost the game because we’re on a roll and playing really good, and I wanted to keep it going.”

Chen gave up two singles to Pierzynski, who homered in the seventh and eighth innings off relievers Louis Coleman and Jesse Chavez.

“Bruce pitched OK,” Yost said. “He kept us in the game, contained the damage pretty good. Louie gave up the two back-to-back homers. Jesse was the freshest arm we had down there. I tried to squeak through the eighth with him and he got two quick outs then it was kind of boom, boom, boom from that point and it got away from us.”

The Royals, who stranded a dozen runners, trailed 4-3 going into the seventh.

“We had a lot of opportunities to pick up runs and we didn’t do it,” Yost said. “And those are runs that would have made a difference in this game.”

Paul Konerko and Pierzynski had back-to-back homers leading off the seventh against Coleman. It was Konerko’s 30th home run. Konerko, who also singled home Juan Pierre in the eighth for his 103rd RBI, has reached 30 home runs and 100 RBIs for the fifth time in his career.

The White Sox took a 4-0 lead in ending the Royals’ seven-game winning streak, Kansas City’s longest run since notching seven in a row Sept. 13-18, 2008.

Pierzynski’s three-run homer off Chavez in the eighth struck the right-field pole. It was Pierzynski’s fourth career multihomer game — the past two have been at Kauffman Stadium, his previous coming July 9, 2010.

“It’s one of those things that when I came into the season that I kind of felt like that’s my job, to drive in runs,” Konerko said.

Brent Morel’s double in the second scored Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo, who had both singled.

In the fourth, Adam Dunn doubled home Alex Rios for his first extra-base hit against a left-hander, in his 89th at-bat this season. Dunn stopped at third on Viciedo’s single and scored on Gordon Beckham’s sacrifice fly.

The Royals scored a pair of runs in the fifth with Yamaico Navarro and Billy Butler getting the RBIs. Johnny Giavotella’s triple in the sixth scored Jeff Francoeur, cutting the White Sox lead to 4-3. Giavotella’s third hit in the ninth scored Eric Hosmer.

Hosmer, who had also three hits, had an RBI single in the seventh.

Left-hander John Danks (7-12), who was 0-3 with a 10.91 ERA in his previous three starts allowed 10 hits and four runs in six-plus innings.

Bruce Chen (11-8) took the loss and is 1-3 in four September starts. He allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks in 5 1-3 innings.

NOTES: Beckham, who leads AL second baseman with a .992 fielding percentage, was charged with his second error in 49 games when he mishandled Francoeur’s bouncer in the sixth. … Navarro made his first start at shortstop For Royals. He had started five games at third base. … Pierre leads the AL with 43 infield hits and 19 bunt hits. … The Royals and White Sox are both off Monday. The White Sox play a doubleheader Tuesday at Cleveland and will start Gavin Floyd and Dylan Axelrod. … RHP Luis Mendoza, who was the Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year after going 12-5 with a 2.18 ERA for Triple-A Omaha, will start Tuesday against Detroit, the AL Central champions. It will be Mendoza’s first big league start since Aug. 13, 2008, while with Texas.

Pierzynski’s three-run homer off Jesse Chavez in the eighth struck the right-field foul pole. It was Pierzynski’s fourth career multihomer game – the past two have been at Kauffman Stadium, his previous coming July 9, 2010.

Navarro made his first start at shortstop For Royals. He had started five games at third base. Pierre leads the AL with 43 infield hits and 19 bunt hits. The Royals and White Sox are both off Monday. The White Sox play a doubleheader Tuesday at Cleveland and will start Gavin Floyd and Dylan Axelrod. RHP Luis Mendoza, who was the Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year after going 12-5 with a 2.18 ERA for Triple-A Omaha, will start Tuesday against Detroit, the AL Central champions. It will be Mendoza’s first big league start since Aug. 13, 2008, while with Texas.

CHICAGO (AP)—Jake Peavy’s(notes) one bad inning was enough to send the Chicago
White Sox to a costly loss.

Jason Kubel(notes) and Luke Hughes(notes) homered during Minnesota’s six-run first inning,
and the Twins snapped Chicago’s five-game winning streak with a 7-6 victory on
Wednesday.

“It was rough first inning,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “I
thought it was going to be a little bit worse than that.”

Kubel and Hughes each hit a two-run shot off Peavy (6-7), who allowed four
consecutive extra-base hits during his rocky beginning. Trevor Plouffe(notes), Joe
Mauer(notes) and Michael Cuddyer(notes) hit three straight doubles to plate the first two
runs.

The White Sox fell six games back of the AL Central-leading Tigers, who
rallied for a 5-4 victory over Kansas City. Chicago is off Thursday and opens an
important three-game series at Detroit on Friday.

There was a stout wind blowing out to left field on a hot afternoon at U.S.
Cellular Field and Peavy said Minnesota’s ability to get the ball up into the
breeze was the key to its strong start.

“They were hitting the ball to left field and the ball was traveling to
left field very well,” Peavy said. “Obviously I didn’t make a lot of good
pitches.”

The damaging streak of extra-base hits started with Plouffe’s one-out
double. Mauer drove in Plouffe to give him 500 career RBIs. Cuddyer then doubled
in Mauer and scored when Kubel lofted a fly ball to left that got some help from
the wind and barely cleared the outstretched glove of a leaping Juan Pierre(notes).

“That ball to Kubel, he put his head down and going up the line, he was
upset at himself,” Peavy said.

Kubel’s third homer in his last four games was his 14th in 39 career games
at U.S. Cellular Field.

After Danny Valencia(notes) struck out, Rene Tosoni(notes) singled and Hughes hit a drive
to left-center for his seventh homer.

Scott Diamond(notes) (1-2) allowed three runs and three hits in six innings to earn
his first major league win. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Diamond may have learned
from Peavy’s struggles.

“I think Diamond saw that in the first inning and decided he was going to
throw the ball down,” Gardenhire said.

Joe Nathan(notes) yielded Paul Konerko’s(notes) two-run single in the ninth before
finishing for his 12th save.

“That’s what Joe is known for is closing games,” Diamond said. “That’s
what always makes the game exciting is ninth-inning drama, but like he always
does, he closed the game down and got us a win.”

Peavy settled down after the rough start, giving the White Sox a chance to
get back into the game. Lillibridge hit a two-run homer in the third and came
all the way around from first to score on Konerko’s double in the sixth.

“We just battled,” Lillibridge said. “I’m sure Ozzie loved the way we
played. We played hard and we kept forcing good at-bats and battling to the
end.”

Peavy allowed six runs and eight hits over five innings, falling to 2-6 with
a 5.77 ERA since a relief appearance on June 25. The 2007 NL Cy Young Award
winner still isn’t 100 percent after having surgery on his right shoulder and
said the bullpen outing might have been a mistake.

“If I could go back and take one thing away, I probably set myself back
with the relief appearance I had,” Peavy said.

Jason Repko(notes) added a two-out drive in the seventh for the Twins, who went
7-21 in August for the club’s worst-ever record in the month.

Alex Rios(notes) hit an RBI single in the eighth but Chicago left the bases loaded
when Tyler Flowers(notes) lined out to third to end the inning.

Chicago mounted another challenge in the ninth, but Nathan struck out Rios
with a runner on first to end the game.

Guillen had Adam Dunn(notes) hit for Lillibridge with runners on second and third
in the ninth and the much-maligned slugger struck out swinging before Konerko’s
bloop hit.

“I didn’t want the matchup Nathan against Lilli,” Guillen said. “The only
thing is go out and hit the ball out of the ballpark or walk. Obviously, he
struck out but that’s the matchup I like the best. “

Tough loss, but now it’s on to Detroit for what may be a season-turning
series for the White Sox, one way or another.

“I feel like we have to win the series to be really optimistic for the rest
of the year,” Lillibridge said. “We’re ready. We’ve been playing good
baseball.”

NOTES: Chicago OF Carlos Quentin(notes) said his sprained left shoulder has
improved but he wasn’t willing to put a timetable on his possible return. He’s
been on the disabled list since Aug. 21. . Twins 1B Justin Morneau(notes) (mild
concussion symptoms) has to be cleared by the league before he can return.
Morneau jammed his shoulder on Sunday and experienced headaches, prompting a
concussion test. . After a day off, the Twins begin a three-game road series
against the Angels on Friday with Carl Pavano(notes) going against Los Angeles ace
Jered Weaver(notes). . John Danks(notes) will start the series opener against Tigers ace
Justin Verlander(notes), who is 20-5. Verlander’s last loss came against Chicago on
July 15.

That’s all the news for today.

He’s been on the disabled list since Aug. 21. . Twins 1B Justin Morneau (mild concussion symptoms) has to be cleared by the league before he can return. Morneau jammed his shoulder on Sunday and experienced headaches, prompting a concussion test. . After a day off, the Twins begin a three-game road series against the Angels on Friday with Carl Pavano going against Los Angeles ace Jered Weaver. . The White Sox begin a crucial three-game series at first-place Detroit on Friday. John Danks will start the opener against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who is 20-5. Verlander’s last loss came against Chicago on July 15. … Much-maligned White Sox slugger Adam Dunn hit for Lillibridge with runners on second and third in the ninth and struck out swinging.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jered Weaver pitched seven innings of four-hit ball in his first start since signing an $85 million contract extension, and Erick Aybar drove in three runs in the Los Angeles Angels’ sixth straight victory, 8-0 over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

Torii Hunter homered for the Angels, and Jeff Mathis had a two-run double during a three-run second inning in a dominant finale to their nine-game homestand. Los Angeles’ second straight series sweep and Texas’ 13-2 loss to Boston trimmed the Angels’ deficit in the AL West to just 21/2 games before they head into a weekend series at Rangers Ballpark on Friday.

Zach Stewart (1-3) allowed seven hits and seven runs while pitching into the seventh inning for Chicago, which missed a chance to move into second place in the AL Central for the second straight day.

Los Angeles scored four runs in the seventh to give a rare easy night to Weaver (15-6), who received one total run of support in his previous three starts combined. Weaver didn’t need that much help while ending a four-start winless streak in dominant fashion, striking out eight and allowing just one runner to reach third base.

A day earlier, Los Angeles announced Weaver had agreed to a five-year deal through 2016, passing up unrestricted free agency to stay in Orange County. Although the Angels scored just eight runs in Weaver’s last six starts, the AL All-Star game starter’s 15 victories already are one short of his career high in 2009.

The Angels have Thursday off before heading to Arlington, where they could conceivably take over the division lead with a three-game sweep. It’s an improbable development after the Rangers took three of four at Angel Stadium last week, only missing a sweep on Mark Trumbo’s two-run homer on the last pitch of the final game.

Texas has lost four of six since leaving Anaheim, while Los Angeles hasn’t lost.

Alejandro De Aza’s third-inning double was the only extra-base hit for the White Sox, who haven’t been above third place since April. They also missed a chance Tuesday to move above .500 for just the second time in four months.

Until the game got away in the seventh inning, Stewart had made a solid return to the White Sox’s rotation after a stint in the bullpen. He made two starts immediately after arriving in a trade with Toronto on July 27, returning to the rotation after an injury to Philip Humber.

After Aybar drove home Trumbo for the Angels’ first run in the second inning, Mathis pounded a double into the left-center gap, scoring Vernon Wells and Aybar. Mathis entered the game batting .176, but his rapport with Weaver makes him valuable to the Angels.

Hunter hit a two-out shot well beyond the left-field wall in the third inning, his 18th homer of the season. The steady slugger is closing in on his sixth straight 20-homer season.

Aybar laced a two-run double down the first-base line in the seventh, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Alberto Callaspo and Bobby Abreu against reliever Josh Kinney.

NOTES: More bad news for Texas: Angels manager Mike Scioscia is contemplating using Ervin Santana and Weaver on short rest after 13-game winner Dan Haren starts the opener at Rangers Ballpark. Los Angeles started rookies Garrett Richards and Tyler Chatwood in the first two games on last week’s series with the Rangers, who beat both soundly. … Jake Peavy will start for the White Sox on Friday when they open a series in Seattle against Charlie Furbush and the Mariners. … Abreu’s 547th career double tied him with Manny Ramirez for 25th on baseball’s career list.

There is the quick update of the day.

For the second straight day, the Chicago White Sox were tantalizingly close to claiming second place in the AL Central.

For the second straight day, the Chicago White Sox were tantalizingly close to claiming second place in the AL Central.

And for the second straight day, it was yanked away by a team that’s getting serious about its own playoff chase.

Jered Weaver pitched seven innings of four-hit ball in his first start since signing an $85 million contract extension, and Erick Aybar drove in three runs in the Los Angeles Angels’ sixth straight victory, 8-0 over the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Zach Stewart (1-3) allowed seven hits and seven runs while pitching into the seventh inning for Chicago, which wasn’t able to capitalize on two straight losses by Cleveland. Division-leading Detroit and the Indians both lost earlier Wednesday, but the White Sox remained 6½ games behind the Tigers in third place, which they’ve occupied for most of the last four months.

“They can win or lose all they want, but if we don’t win, it doesn’t really matter,” White Sox outfielder Juan Pierre said. “I know some guys scoreboard-watch, but if we don’t take care of our business, we’ll be making fishing plans here soon. We’ve just got to keep battling and hope we turn things around.”

Alejandro De Aza’s third-inning double was the only extra-base hit for the White Sox, who haven’t been above third place since April. They also missed a chance Tuesday to move above .500 for just the second time in four months.

“We were facing a pretty good guy on the mound,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “It was just one of those games you throw away and come back the next day. We didn’t pitch good, (and) we didn’t put together anything at all (offensively).”

Until the game got away in the seventh inning, Stewart had made a solid return to the White Sox’s rotation after a stint in the bullpen. He made two starts immediately after arriving in a trade with Toronto on July 27, returning to the rotation after an injury to Philip Humber.

“There were so many big pitches where I just left the ball up and missed my spot,” Stewart said. “I put it in a place where (Mathis) could do something with it, and he did.”

Torii Hunter homered for the Angels, and Jeff Mathis had a two-run double during a three-run second inning in a dominant finale to their nine-game homestand. Los Angeles’ second straight series sweep and Texas’ 13-2 loss to Boston trimmed the Angels’ deficit in the AL West to just 2½ games before they head into a weekend series at Rangers Ballpark on Friday.

“I love the way we’re playing ball right now,” Hunter said. “We’ve got some guys with some heart. We’re going in to play the first-place team, and we’re 2½ games back. We’re riding that wave.”

Los Angeles scored four runs in the seventh, prompting manager Mike Scioscia to call an early night for Weaver (15-6), who received one total run of support in his previous three starts combined. Weaver didn’t need that much help while emphatically ending a four-start winless streak, striking out eight and allowing just one runner to reach third base.

“He throws his cutter and his changeup for strikes, and people sometimes start chasing bad pitches because they’re worried about getting deep into counts,” Guillen said. “That’s the reason we got shut out today. I don’t think he’s the best in the game, but he’s right there.”

After Aybar drove home Mark Trumbo for the Angels’ first run in the second inning, Mathis pounded a double into the left-center gap, scoring Vernon Wells and Aybar.

NOTES: More bad news for Texas: Scioscia is contemplating using Ervin Santana and Weaver on short rest after 13-game winner Dan Haren starts the opener at Rangers Ballpark. Los Angeles started rookies Garrett Richards and Tyler Chatwood in the first two games of last week’s series with the Rangers, who beat both soundly. … Jake Peavy will start for the White Sox on Friday when they open a series in Seattle against Charlie Furbush and the Mariners. … Abreu’s 547th career double tied him with Manny Ramirez for 25th on baseball’s career list.

BALTIMORE – Just when it seemed as if the Chicago White Sox were doomed to play out the string in a losing season, they put together their longest winning streak of the year.

Brent Morel homered and drove in two runs, Carlos Quentin also connected, and the White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.

Before the current run, the White Sox were 52-58. They still have a losing record, but are well within striking distance of first-place Detroit in the AL Central.

“We’ve kind of just been waiting for this all year, really,” Morel said. “We have a lot of potential. It’s kind of been a disappointing year, but knowing that we have a little time left to make a push, hopefully we can keep playing well.”

Morel, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, played a huge part in Chicago’s season-high seventh consecutive road win. In addition to driving in half his team’s runs, the third baseman also made a diving stop of a grounder in the seventh inning with the potential tying run on third.

Gavin Floyd (10-10) gave up three runs in 6 2/3 innings for the White Sox. The Maryland native is 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA lifetime in Baltimore. Coming off a horrid performance against the Yankees in which he surrendered 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings, Floyd improved to 4-1 in his last five starts.

After Floyd left, the bullpen kept Baltimore hitless the rest of the way. Sergio Santos struck out Robert Andino for the final out to earn his 24th save.

“We knew from the beginning we have a good bullpen, and I feel we have a good starting staff and good lineup also,” Floyd said. “Hopefully we can just come together and go on a little run here.”

After Baltimore scored three runs in the fifth, Floyd ended the inning by retiring Vladimir Guerrero with a runner on second. In the seventh, after Felix Pie hit a leadoff double and advanced on a sacrifice, Morel made a diving stab of J.J. Hardy’s grounder, and former Oriole Will Ohman struck out Nick Markakis.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter received his second ejection of the season after umpire Phil Cuzzi called Markakis out on the front end of a double steal in the fifth inning. Markakis and third base coach Willie Randolph initially protested the call, and Showalter carried the argument to another level before being tossed by Cuzzi. Replays indicated the runner was safe.

“That was huge,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “I don’t know if he was safe or out but that was huge, when things start going your way, a lot of things happen. We had a break there and we took advantage.”

Chicago jumped on top with a two-run second inning. After Quentin led off with his 24th home run, Brent Lillibridge walked with two outs and scored on a single by Morel.

A.J. Pierzynski doubled in a run in the third. In the fourth, the White Sox again scored with two outs, this time when Morel hit a 3-1 pitch into the left-field seats.

BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles had plenty of chances to beat the Chicago White Sox. A bad call ruined one of those opportunities. The rest of the blame lies on the Orioles themselves.

BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Orioles had plenty of chances to beat the Chicago White Sox.

A bad call ruined one of those opportunities. The rest of the blame lies on the Orioles themselves.

Baltimore went 3 for 11 with runners in scoring position Tuesday night in a 4-3 loss that featured manager Buck Showalter’s second ejection of the season.

Showalter was tossed after umpire Phil Cuzzi called Nick Markakis out on the front end of a double steal in the fifth inning. Markakis and third base coach Willie Randolph initially protested the call, and Showalter carried the argument to another level before being tossed by Cuzzi. Replays indicated the runner was safe.

That short-circuited a three-run uprising that cut Chicago’s lead to 4-3, and although the Orioles threatened later, they couldn’t score the tying run.

“It’s one of those things. It’s unfortunate,” Showalter said of the call. “You can usually go back to three or four things that would have made it not matter. Obviously, he’s safe, but it’s tough.”

It wouldn’t have mattered if Robert Andino hadn’t missed the tag on a stolen base, which resulted in Chicago’s third run. It wouldn’t have mattered if Markakis didn’t freeze at second base on Vladimir Guerrero’s fourth-inning single and ultimately was stranded at third. And it wouldn’t have mattered if Baltimore pushed across a run in the seventh after getting a runner at third with one out.

“We had plenty of opportunities to capitalize, starting with myself,” Markakis said. “You make small mistakes in the game and they come back and bite you in the butt. … Those kinds of plays are magnified times 10 with the situation that we’re in.”

By losing the first two games of the four-game series, Baltimore will again fail to win its first series since June 24-26. The Orioles are 14-38 since June 10.

Brent Morel homered and drove in two runs and Carlos Quentin also connected for the White Sox, who have won a season-high five straight.

Gavin Floyd (10-10) gave up three runs in 6 2-3 innings for the White Sox. The Maryland native is 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA lifetime in Baltimore. Coming off a horrid performance against the Yankees in which he surrendered 10 runs in 2 1-3 innings, Floyd improved to 4-1 in his last five starts.

After Floyd left, the bullpen kept Baltimore hitless the rest of the way. Sergio Santos struck out Andino for the final out to earn his 24th save and extend his road scoreless streak to 29 games.

Floyd ended the fifth by retiring Guerrero with a runner on second. In the seventh, after Felix Pie hit a leadoff double and advanced on a sacrifice, J.J. Hardy grounded out to third and former Oriole Will Ohman struck out Markakis.

Making his first start with Baltimore after being obtained on waivers from Toronto, Jo-Jo Reyes (5-9) allowed four runs and five hits in four innings. Both walks he issued came around to score, and he also yielded two home runs.

Chris Jakubauskas followed with four innings of two-hit relief.

“Jak was great,” Showalter said. “He was the reason why we had a chance there.”

Chicago jumped on top with a two-run second inning. After Quentin led off with his 24th home run, Brent Lillibridge walked with two outs and scored on a single by Morel.

Reyes walked leadoff hitter Alexei Ramirez in the third, then got two outs before A.J. Pierzynski doubled in a run. The hit came after Andino missed a tag on Ramirez during a steal of second base.

In the fourth, Morel hit a 3-1 pitch into the left-field seats. He has two home runs in 263 at-bats this season.

Baltimore finally broke through in the fifth. Three straight singles loaded the bases, and Hardy drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. Markakis followed with an RBI single, and another run scored when shortstop Ramirez fumbled Adam Jones’ grounder. Then came the ill-fated double steal attempt.

NOTES: Davis returned after missing four straight games with a sore shoulder. … Chicago RHP Philip Humber (8-8) makes his 20th start of the season Wednesday night. He’s 0-4 with a 7.97 ERA in his last four outings. Baltimore will counter with Tommy Hunter, obtained in a trade with Texas on July 30. In his starting debut with the Orioles, Hunter yielded four runs in four innings in a loss to Toronto. … Pierzynski has four hits in the series after coming to town in an 0-for-12 slump.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Just when it seemed as if the Chicago White Sox were doomed to play out the string in a losing season, they put together their longest winning streak of the year.

Sergio Santos struck out Robert Andino for the final out to earn his 24th save and extend his road scoreless streak to 29 games.

By losing the first two games of the four-game series, Baltimore will again fail to win its first series since June 24-26. The call at third place hurt, but the Orioles also made several pivotal errors, including a missed tag on a stolen base and Markakis freezing at second on a fourth-inning single by Guerrero.

“We had plenty of opportunities to capitalize, starting with myself,” Markakis said. “You make small mistakes in the game and they come back and bite you in the butt.”

In the fourth, the White Sox again scored with two outs, this time when Morel hit a 3-1 pitch into the left-field seats. He has two home runs in 263 at-bats this season.

Held hitless through the first three innings, the Orioles got a leadoff double from Markakis in the fourth. But with runners at the corners, Floyd struck out Chris Davis and Mark Reynolds to end the inning.

Baltimore finally broke through in the fifth. Three straight singles loaded the bases, and Hardy drove in a run with fielder’s choice.
