Swarzak, Twins beat White Sox 6-3

CHICAGO (AP)—Anthony Swarzak(notes) dominated over six innings, and the Minnesota
Twins got back to beating the Chicago White Sox with a 6-3 victory on Sunday.

The Twins head into the All-Star break with nine wins in 12 games after
taking three of four in this series. They shook off a 4-3 loss on Saturday that
snapped a nine-game winning streak against Chicago dating to last season,
getting an RBI single by Drew Butera(notes) and run-scoring double by Jason Repko(notes) in
the fourth before tacking on three more while knocking out Jake Peavy(notes) (4-3) in
the fifth.

That was more than enough for Swarzak (2-2), who simply dominated while
filling in for the injured Scott Baker(notes) (strained right flexor muscle). The
25-year-old right-hander allowed just four hits and one run while striking out
five and walking two as Minnesota beat Chicago for the 29th time in 36 games.

Peavy ran into trouble with two outs in the fourth when he walked Rene
Tosoni(notes)
and Tsuyoshi Nishioka(notes) before Butera and Repko came through, making it
2-0, and he didn’t make it out of the fifth as the White Sox lost for the fifth
time in six games.

Alexi Casilla(notes) and Joe Mauer(notes) started that rally with singles, putting runners
on first and third before Michael Cuddyer(notes) made it a three-run game with a
sacrifice fly to deep left. Mauer moved up on that play and advanced to third on
a single by Danny Valencia(notes) before Tosoni drove him in with a single past a
diving shortstop Alexei Ramirez(notes), knocking Peavy out of the game.

Will Ohman(notes) came in and the lead hit 5-0 on an odd inning-ending double play,
when Valencia scored on Nishioka’s grounder to second and Tosoni got caught off
the base.

It was another rough outing for Peavy, whose ERA is now at 5.27 after he
allowed five runs and 10 hits. He walked two and struck out two, giving him
1,501 in his career.

The Twins, meanwhile, couldn’t have asked for more from Swarzak, who was
making his fourth start of the season. He allowed a leadoff single to Juan
Pierre(notes)
in the first and didn’t allow another hit until Alex Rios(notes) singled with
one out in the fifth.

The White Sox finally scored with two out in the sixth when Paul Konerko(notes)
singled in Pierre, and got two more in the seventh when A.J. Pierzynski(notes) and
Gordon Beckham(notes) drove RBI doubles after Rios led off with a walk against Alex
Burnett(notes).

After Mark Teahen(notes) struck out, Glen Perkins(notes) came in and retired Pierre and
Ramirez before working a scoreless eighth. Matt Capps(notes) then worked the ninth for
his 15th save in 21 chances.

Notes: The White Sox placed C Ramon Castro(notes) on the 15-day disabled list
because of a broken right hand and index finger and recalled catcher Tyler
Flowers(notes)
from Triple-A Charlotte before the game. … Pitching coach Don Cooper
said Gavin Floyd(notes), Edwin Jackson(notes) and Peavy will likely start the three games at
Detroit following the All-Star break, with Mark Buehrle(notes), Phil Humber and John
Danks(notes)
pitching at Kansas City. That’s assuming Danks, out with a strained right
oblique muscle, suffers no setbacks. He allowed a pair of homers and two runs in
a rehab start for Charlotte on Sunday, and Cooper said he will make another one
before rejoining the rotation.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Chicago White Sox starter Jake Peavy throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Detroit Tigers in Chicago, Sunday, June 5, 2011.

White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy is listed as day to day with a mild strain on his right groin.
Peavy had an MRI exam Monday, a day after he started for Chicago against Detroit. He was perfect through three innings, but gave up six runs in the fourth and left the game.
The 30-year-old Peavy had season-ending surgery last July to repair a muscle under his right shoulder and started this season on the disabled list.
Peavy is 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA in five starts this year.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

Surging Tigers take 2 of 3 on the road from White Sox

White Sox’s Peavy down again

CHICAGO – Jake Peavy thought he had dominant stuff before another injury curtailed his start.

Peavy lasted just four innings as the Chicago White Sox lost 7-3 to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

Ryan Raburn hit a grand slam and Miguel Cabrera homered for the second straight day for Detroit, which has won 11 of its last 12 games against the White Sox. The Tigers captured the last two in the weekend series at Chicago to move within 2 1/2 games of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which lost 2-0 to Texas on Sunday.

Peavy left with a strained right groin after allowing six runs in the fourth inning. Peavy’s 2010 season ended when he injured his right shoulder on July 6.

The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner said the groin tightened up in his win against Boston last Monday and he started to feel discomfort in the second inning Sunday.

“I didn’t think too much of it until after the second inning, it was grabbing bad enough for me to come out and do a wrap job, and (I) took a couple of Tylenols,” Peavy said.

Chicago pushed across two runs in the first and Peavy (2-1) retired the first nine batters before running into trouble in the fourth.

“I had it today. Today could’ve been a special day and I could’ve helped this team win. The first couple of innings were sharp,” Peavy said. “I’m going to probably miss some time now. It’s tough.”

Peavy has allowed six runs, three hits and walked three in his fifth start since he rejoined the team May 11 after recovering from shoulder surgery. He threw 75 pitches and will be re-evaluated today.

YANKEES 5, ANGELS 3: Mark Teixeira homered twice against his former team, Nick Swisher also went deep and New York topped Los Angeles to win the three-game series.

Bartolo Colon (3-3) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings as the Yankees concluded a 6-3 road trip and maintained their one-game lead over Boston in the AL East.

RED SOX 6, ATHLETICS 3: Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer to reach 50 RBI and Carl Crawford had a three-run shot, powering John Lackey and Boston past Oakland.

John Lackey pitched into the sixth inning in his first start in nearly a month as Boston swept the A’s to salvage a split of a six-game homestand.

BLUE JAYS 7, ORIOLES 4: Adam Lind went 4 for 4 with two homers and three RBI to back another winning effort by left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes, and Toronto roughed up Jeremy Guthrie in a victory at Baltimore.

Yunel Escobar also homered and Edwin Encarnacion had three hits for the Blue Jays, who took two of three from the last-place Orioles.

RANGERS 2, INDIANS 0: C.J. Wilson pitched into the eighth inning, Mitch Moreland and Elvis Andrus homered, and Texas beat the Indians for its first four-game sweep in Cleveland in nearly 33 years. Wilson (6-3) allowed three hits over 7 2/3 innings. The left-hander fanned seven.

TWINS 6, ROYALS 0: Brian Duensing pitched eight sharp innings and Jason Repko snapped an 0-for-14 skid and drove in three runs, giving Minnesota a victory at Kansas City, and its first four-game sweep in almost four years. The four-game win streak is a season best for the Twins, who’ve been struggling with eight players on the disabled list and were missing two of their best, Justin Morneau and Denard Span, for the second day in a row.

MARINERS 9, RAYS 6: Miguel Olivo hit a tiebreaking three-run homer off Joel Peralta in the bottom of the eighth inning and host Seattle rallied for a win over Tampa Bay.

Ichiro Suzuki and Greg Halman each drove in two runs for Seattle, which has won six straight series and 14 of 18 games overall.

Peavy leaves White Sox loss with groin injury

The Tigers captured the last two in the weekend series at Chicago to move within 2 1/2 games of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which lost 2-0 to Texas on Sunday.

Peavy left with a strained right groin after allowing six runs in the fourth inning. Peavy’s 2010 season ended when he injured his right shoulder on July 6.

The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner said the groin tighten up in his victory against Boston last Monday and he started to feel discomfort in the second inning of Sunday’s start.

“I felt it tighten up in Boston, just throughout that start it was tight,” Peavy said. “I didn’t think too much of it until after the second inning, it was grabbing bad enough for me to come out and do a wrap job, and (I) took a couple of Tylenols.”

Peavy allowed six runs, three hits and walked three in his fifth start since he rejoined the team on May 11 after recovering from shoulder surgery. He threw 75 pitches and will be re-evaluated on Monday.

The right-hander is unsure how long he may be out.

“The way I feel now and the way I felt when I came out of the game I think it would be hard for this thing to go away,” Peavy said. “I feel it when I walk so I can’t imagine in four days or five days from now it being completely gone where I could go out and drive on the mound and pitch in a game, that’s just me, but nothing is etched in stone.”

Austin Jackson started the fourth inning with a single and Don Kelly followed with a bouncer to first baseman Paul Konerko, who threw to second for one, but shortstop Alexei Ramirez’s throw back to Konerko pulled him off the base and Kelly was safe. Peavy then walked Brennan Boesch and threw a wild pitch, putting runners on second and third.

After Cabrera drew a walk in a 13-pitch at-bat, Victor Martinez hit a sacrifice fly and Andy Dirks tied it with an RBI double. Another walk, this one to Alex Avila, loaded the bases for Raburn, who snapped a 6-for-52 rut with his third career grand slam.

“That’s what we’re working hardest on is getting runners in when we get the opportunities,” Raburn said. “Fortunately for me, it went over the fence, but I definitely would have taken a single.”

Peavy felt the most pain on Kelly’s fielder’s choice.

“I broke and ran and it grabbed me pretty good,” he said. “After that it was hard for me to stay mechanically anywhere close to where I was previous. I made a whole lot of pitches after that.”

Brad Penny (5-4) rebounded from a shaky first inning to pick up the victory. He allowed three runs and eight hits, struck out five and walked two in five innings.

Three relievers combined for four innings of two-hit ball after Penny departed. Closer Jose Valverde got Konerko to line out with runners on first and second to end the game.

“Peavy’s real tough, obviously,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “You’re not gonna get a whole lot, so when we got the opportunity, we came up with a big one. It didn’t start off too good, but it ended up good.”

Since being traded to the White Sox on July 31, 2009, Peavy is 12-7 in 27 starts. He was bothered by ankle problems in 2009 and went 3-0 in three late starts for the White Sox. He made 17 starts last year and was 7-6 before his season was cut short by the shoulder injury.

Cabrera hit his 13th homer off Will Ohman in the sixth. He also had a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 4-2 win.

Konerko was back in the lineup after having a minor procedure to dislodge a loose fragment in his left wrist on Friday. He hit an RBI double in Chicago’s two-run first.

White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham homered for the second straight day. His solo drive in the fourth was his sixth of the season.

Adam Dunn was 1 for 4 with three strikeouts for Chicago. He struck out in the eighth, igniting boos from the crowd.

NOTES: White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen gave CF Alex Rios the day off. He is in a 6-for-40 slump covering his last 10 games. Guillen said he might also rest Rios on Monday against the Mariners. … The White Sox activated INF Mark Teahen from the 15-day DL and designated RHP Jeff Marquez for assignment.

What do you guys think about this.
