Jeff Manto, Joe McEwing and Mark Parent have joined new manager Robin Ventura’s coaching staff with the Chicago White Sox.

Manto was the White Sox’s minor league hitting coordinator the last four seasons and will now be the big club’s hitting coach. McEwing managed Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate at Charlotte last season. He will serve as third base coach.

Parent will be Ventura’s bench coach. He had a 13-year major league career and managed Double-A Reading in the Phillies’ organization last season.

Pitching coach Don Cooper and first base coach Harold Baines are holdovers from former manager Ozzie Guillen’s staff. Ventura replaced Guillen, who was released from the final year of his contract and became manager of the Marlins.

Manto, who spent two years as the Pittsburgh Pirates hitting coach from 2006-07, said he will reach out to two players who struggled mightily last season — Adam Dunn and Alex Rios.

“Find out where they’re at hope and hopefully when we get to spring training we can hit the ground running,” Manto said.

With the exception of Ventura, none of the three coaches were major league standouts. And they have limited experience in the majors as coaches. Ventura is a rookie manager.

“All we know is how to grind it out and get the best of what we’ve got that day,” said Manto, who replaces Greg Walker. “It’s going to be a blast working together.”

Manto hit homers in four consecutive at-bats while with the Baltimore Orioles in 1995.

Ventura, with no major league coaching or managerial experience, said he brought in people he was comfortable with.

“I totally trust what they’re going to be doing and what we’re asking them to do in their job and helping me,” Ventura said. “I’m not just hiring friends and we’re going to go in here and have a great old time. We’re here to work and win games and that’s what I was looking for.”

What do you guys think about this.

Robin Ventura was introduced Tuesday as the Chicago White Sox’s new manager and said he has had plenty of congratulatory phone calls. The best advice he’s heard: be himself.

Ventura, who has no major league coaching or managerial experience, says he is humbled and honored to be the team’s 39th manager. He played for the White Sox for 10 years.

He replaces Ozzie Guillen, who is now manager of the Florida Marlins.

General manager Ken Williams said Ventura’s leadership abilities are evident. He also said that before hiring Ventura he considered first baseman Paul Konerko as a player/manager, although they never talked about it.

(Reuters) – Former Chicago White Sox All-Star third baseman Robin Ventura was named manager of the Major League Baseball club, the team said on Thursday.

Ventura, who was already working as a director of player development for the White Sox, replaces the colourful Ozzie Guillen, who parted ways with the club last month and joined the Florida Marlins.

“When I rejoined the White Sox this June, I said this was my baseball home and that part of me never left the White Sox organisation,” Ventura said in statement.

“My family and I are thrilled to be returning to Chicago. Managing a Major League Baseball team is a tremendous honor. It’s also an opportunity and a challenge.”

Ventura was originally drafted by the White Sox in 1998, and played more than 10 years with the organisation. He also played for the New York Mets, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers during his 16-year career.

In 2,079 career games, Ventura had a .267 batting average with 294 home runs and 1,182 RBIs.

“I wanted someone who met very specific criteria centered around his leadership abilities,” said White Sox general manager Ken Williams. “Robin Ventura was that man. His baseball knowledge and expertise, his professionalism, his familiarity with the White Sox and Chicago and his outstanding character make him absolutely the right person to lead our clubhouse and this organization into the seasons ahead.”

It’s all in the family for the Chicago White Sox organization and their latest managerial hire.

Chicago named Robin Ventura, a long-time White Sox infielder and current special advisor to the team’s director of player development, the next manager of the club.

The 44-year-old played 16 major league seasons, 10 of which were spent on the South Side. He replaces Ozzie Guillen, who left the club for the Florida Marlins.

“When I rejoined the White Sox this June, I said this was my baseball home and that part of me never left the White Sox organization,” Ventura said in a statement. “My family and I are thrilled to be returning to Chicago. Managing a Major League Baseball team is a tremendous honor. It’s also an opportunity and a challenge.

The hire was a shock to many. Owner Kenny Williams had contacted the Rays to speak with bench coach Dave Martinez. Former Sox catcher Sandy Alomar was also considered a candidate.

“When I met with the media as our season ended, I identified one person at the very top of my managerial list,” general manager Ken Williams said in a statement. “I wanted someone who met very specific criteria centered around his leadership abilities. Robin Ventura was that man.”

But Williams and the organization have never shied away from questionable hires (see Guillen, Ozzie). And that marriage helped end an 88-year World Series drought.

That’s all for today.

The Chicago White Sox on Thursday announced that Robin Ventura has been named the teams new manager after Ozzie Guillen left the organization last week.

The 44-year-old former player agreed to the multiyear deal with the club after working over the last season as a special advisor to director of player development Buddy Bell.

In a statement about the decision team GM Ken Williams said:

“When I met with the media as our season ended, I identified one person at the very top of my managerial list.” Williams went on to add, “I wanted someone who met very specific criteria centered around his leadership abilities. Robin Ventura was that man. His baseball knowledge and expertise, his professionalism, his familiarity with the White Sox and Chicago and his outstanding character make him absolutely the right person to lead our clubhouse and this organization into the seasons ahead.”

Ventura actually wasn’t sold on the idea until he met with Williams:

“There was a lot of (apprehension) when I first went home to talk to my wife about it,” Ventura said. “It turned us upside down. I have a good thing going and it was easy getting back into the game doing what I was doing. I had the freedom to coach and come back home. I think there was a lot of comfort in talking to the family that this was the White Sox, which for us is an extended family.”

A former Chicago White Sox player from 1989-1998, Venture played in the Bigs for 16 seasons including the 1999-2001 season with the New York Mets, a season with the New York Yankees and a career finishing stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he ended his player career in 2004.

Do you think Ventura is the right decision for manager of the Chicago White Sox?

FORMER ALL-STAR third baseman Robin Ventura is replacing the fiery Ozzie Guillen as manager of the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox say that Ventura agreed to a multiyear deal yesterday.

A longtime star with the White Sox, Ventura was hired by the club last June as a special adviser to director of player development Buddy Bell. Ventura is the 38th White Sox manager overall, including 17 who played for the team.

Guillen was released from his contract with 1 year remaining after eight seasons with the White Sox and immediately was hired by the Florida Marlins as their manager.

Ventura was a first-round draft pick of the White Sox out of Oklahoma State in 1988 and spent the first 10 seasons of his 16-year career with Chicago. Known for his slick fielding, clutch hitting and lefthanded power, Ventura also played for the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers. He was a six-time Gold Glove winner and an All-Star in 1992 and 2002.

Ventura’s selection came as a surprise. Most speculation had the White Sox’ top candidates as either Tampa Bay Rays coach Dave Martinez or Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. Both are former White Sox players.

“When I rejoined the White Sox this June, I said this was my baseball home and that part of me never left the White Sox organization,” Ventura said. “My family and I are thrilled to be returning to Chicago. Managing a major league baseball team is a tremendous honor. It’s also an opportunity and a challenge.”

Ventura batted .267 with 294 home runs and 1,182 RBI over his career. His 18 career grand slams are tied for fifth in major league history. He appeared in 1,254 games over 10 seasons with the White Sox, hitting .274 with 171 home runs and 741 RBI. He ranks among the White Sox career leaders in grand slams, walks, homers, RBI, extra-base hits and runs scored.

Noteworthy *

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said that while signing outfielder Matt Kemp to an extension will be a priority this winter, he will not put a time limit of Opening Day on the negotiations, as Kemp’s agent Dave Stewart has suggested.

Kemp, 27, is coming off his finest season as a professional. He hit .324 with 39 home runs, 126 RBI and 40 steals. He has one more season of arbitration and would become a free agent after the 2012 season if the Dodgers don’t sign him to an extension.

Former Chicago White Sox All-Star third baseman Robin Ventura was named manager of the Major League Baseball club, the team said on Thursday.

There’s little doubt that first baseman Paul Konerko was the Chicago White Sox’s 2011 Most Valuable Player on the basis of his team-leading 31 home runs and 105 RBIs.

But not even Konerko could singlehandedly keep the Sox in contention in late August and September. When Carlos Quentin suffered a sprain of the AC joint in his left shoulder while making a diving catch on Aug. 20, Konerko was batting .316 despite a sore left calf to go with 28 home runs.

But the lack of protection was only a small reason why Konerko’s batting average sank to .300 while hitting only three home runs after Quentin’s injury. The season-long slump of Adam Dunn gave then-manager Ozzie Guillen little choice but to start Konerko at first base instead of giving him extended breaks at designated hitter down the stretch.

Despite Konerko’s impressive season, Sox first basemen ranked 10th in the American League with a .243 batting average, and they were fifth with 100 RBIs.

When he was allowed to, Guillen got plenty of mileage out of Konerko as the designated hitter. In 37 games as the DH, Konerko batted .348 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs.

Konerko, however, is the Sox’s best defensive first baseman, The Sox will need a comeback year from Dunn as well as occasional help from Tyler Flowers and maybe Brent Lillibridge to keep Konerko strong when he enters the 2012 season at the age of 36.

Konerko batted .319 in the first half but hit only .272 in the second half. Konerko coped with a sore left calf for the final two months, and his missed the final three games because of a very sore left elbow after getting hit by a pitch.

All signs point to Konerko and the Sox needing more help at first base to ensure that he remains strong throughout the 2012 season.

Terry Francona would seem to be a logical choice to be the Chicago White Sox’ next manager for a number of reasons.

A) He’s available, and the White Sox have a vacancy.

B) He’s a laid-back players coach, in contrast to outgoing (in more ways than one) manager Ozzie Guillen. Teams often like to replace one type of manager with his polar opposite.

C) Francona has history in the organization, having managed the Double-A Birmingham Barons when Michael Jordan made his brief attempt at professional baseball.

D) He won two World Series in a four-year span. The White Sox have won one in the past 93 years.

One thing that could stand in the way of Francona heading the Windy City, however, might be the most important factor of them all.

Hint: It’s printed with green ink.

White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is not especially generous with the salaries he hands out to his managers, and Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times believes that could be an obstacle to bringing Francona to the South Side.

“What raises the red flag would be Francona’s price tag,” Cowley writes. “Reinsdorf managers the last 15 years or so have been first-year guys, which means they come on the cheap. Francona was a $4-million a year skipper, due $4.25 million next season if the Red Sox brought him back, and then $4.5 million in 2013.

Guillen made $2 million last season, according to Cowley, and left to manage the Marlins.
