White Sox beat up on Angels

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) – Adam Dunn and A.J. Pierzynski each knocked in two runs to help the Chicago White Sox beat the LA Angels of Anaheim, 6-1, in the final test of a two-game series.

Dayan Viciedo hit a solo homer for the White Sox, who bounced back from a 7-2 loss in the opener of this brief set on Wednesday. Paul Konerko drove in a run and scored a run.

Chris Sale (4-2) allowed one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He struck out seven and walked one.

“We continued to put pressure on them today,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “We had good at-bats and Chris has been good for us.”

Albert Pujols hit a solo homer for the Angels, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

C.J. Wilson (4-4) gave up four runs — one earned — on four hits over 3 2/3 frames. He walked six and fanned three.

“We’ll turn the page on this one,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “C.J. had trouble putting pitches in the zone. He started to feel a little under the weather as the game went on.”

The White Sox broke a scoreless tie in the third inning. Konerko worked a two-out walk, moved to second on Alex Rios’ single and crossed the plate on Pierzynski’s base hit to right. Pierzynski was tagged out while trying to reach second.

The visitors added three more runs in the fourth. With one out, Viciedo hit a routine fly ball to right fielder Mike Trout, who dropped the ball. Brent Morel and Alejandro De Aza followed with walks to load the bases. Two batters later, Dunn hit a two-run single to right-center field. David Carpenter came in from the bullpen and Konerko greeted him with an RBI single to shallow right field.

Pujols’ third homer of the season in the sixth made it a 4-1 game.

But Viciedo hit a solo homer of his own in the eighth to give Chicago a four- run margin again.

Pierzynski added an RBI single in the ninth to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

Wilson fell to 3-1 in 13 lifetime meetings (four starts) against the White Sox…Angels designated hitter Mark Trumbo went 4-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games…LA went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight.

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs Probable…

The Chicago Cubs will begin their 2012 MLB interleague schedule with a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox from May 18 through May 20. The Cubs’ probable pitchers are Jeff Samardzija, Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm. The White Sox‘s probable pitchers include Philip Humber, John Danks and Jake Peavy.

All times are central time zone. The probable pitchers are updated as of May 17 on Cubs.mlb.com. The Cubs are represented by the pitchers in italics. Batter versus pitcher data is from ESPN.

May 18, 1:20 p.m.: Jeff Samardzija (4-1, 2.89 ERA) vs. Philip Humber (1-2, 5.77 ERA)

Jeff Samardzija received a no-decision in his last start after he lasted five innings and 91 pitches against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 13. The Cubs eventually won that game but lost two-of-three in the series.

Current White Sox hitters have 10 career at-bats against Samardzija. They’re 3-for-10 (.300 batting average) with two RBIs, a double and home run. The home run was from Adam Dunn. The other hits were from A.J. Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez.

May 19, 6:15 p.m.: Ryan Dempster (0-1, 1.74 ERA) vs. John Danks (2-4, 6.46 ERA)

Ryan Dempster had his worst outing of 2012 when he surrendered four earned runs and nine hits in six innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 14. Dempster was tagged with a no-decision as the Cubs won 6-4. This was the first non-quality start of the season from Dempster.

Current White Sox hitters are 24-for-80 (.300 batting average) with a .411 on-base percentage (OBP) against Dempster. Dunn is 5-for-17 (.294 batting average) with 10 walks, four RBIs and two home runs. Ramirez and Pierzynski have combined to go 13-for-36 (.361 batting average) with two RBIs and a home run.

May 20, 1:20 p.m.: Paul Maholm (4-2, 4.35 ERA) vs. Jake Peavy (4-1, 2.65 ERA)

Paul Maholm has pitched quite well this season as long as he hasn’t faced the Cardinals. Maholm has surrendered 19 earned runs through seven starts. However, 10 of those runs have occurred against the Cardinals in two road starts.

Current White Sox hitters are 5-for-45 (.111 batting average) against Maholm. This is misleading because Dunn has 28 of those at-bats. Dunn is 3-for-28 (.107 batting average) with seven walks. Paul Konerko and Pierzynski have gotten hits against Maholm.

Joshua Huffman grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as a Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs enthusiast. He immediately gained an admiration for Cubs fans after watching numerous games on WGN during the mid-90s. His favorite Cubs moment was Kerry Wood’s(notes) 1-hitter, 20K extravaganza that was only denied of a no-hitter by Kevin Orie’s defensive blunder. As a Packers and Cubs fan, he suffered through Steve Bartman and “4th & 26″ in a span of three months. He can be found on Twitter HERE.

White Sox shoot for fifth straight win and sweep…

(Sports Network) – Chris Sale will make his second career start and aim to give the Chicago White Sox a fifth straight victory and a sweep of their weekend series against the Detroit Tigers.

Sale posted a 4-2 victory at Cleveland on Monday when he allowed three hits and a run over 6 2/3 innings. The lefty, who had 79 appearances in relief to start his major league career, will try to cap Chicago’s first home sweep of the Tigers since Aug. 11-13, 2006.

Detroit righty Rick Porcello didn’t get a decision in his first start of 2012 on Tuesday vs. Tampa Bay. Porcello gave up seven hits and a pair of runs over seven frames of Detroit’s 5-2 victory. He’s 2-4 with an inflated 6.91 ERA in seven games vs. the White Sox.

On Saturday, Tyler Flowers, Alexei Ramirez and Paul Konerko hit solo homers and Gavin Floyd pitched six scoreless innings, as the White Sox took a 5-1 win. Alejandro De Aza and Adam Dunn each knocked in a run for the White Sox, who have won four in a row to improve to 5-2 on the young season.

Floyd (1-1) gave up just three hits to go with six strikeouts and three walks. He improved to 7-2 in 18 career starts against Detroit.

“I like the feel of the team and the way they come everyday prepared to play,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Brennan Boesch hit a solo home run for the Tigers, who have lost three of four since starting the year 4-0.

Adam Wilk (0-1), filling in for an injured Doug Fister, allowed two runs on three hits in his first career start. But Wilk left the game with an injury after a Prince Fielder foul ball hit him in the dugout during the top of the sixth inning.

“I had no idea it was coming,” Wilk said. “There was a group of players on the railing and I didn’t see it coming at all. The first thing I knew it just hit me.”

Detroit was 13-5 against the White Sox a year ago with six of those wins coming in the Windy City.

On this the 65th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier Major League Baseball is commemorating this special occasion by having all players and on-field personnel once again wear the Hall of Famer’s No. 42, as well as other pregame festivities.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.
