CHICAGO — Authorities say a homeless man broke into Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams’ downtown townhouse, had a bite to eat and drank a beer before he left wearing Williams’ clothes and his World Series ring.

On Tuesday, a Cook County judge ordered 51-year-old Wayne Field III jailed in lieu of US$100,000 bond on a residential burglary charge.

Prosecutors say Williams discovered the Monday burglary when he returned home from a trip on Tuesday.

Prosecutors say police noticed Field standing near the home.

When they questioned him, police found he was wearing Williams’ clothes and carrying his watch and World Series ring. Authorities say Field admitted to the break in after police found a hospital bracelet with Field’s name on it inside the home.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Even before he officially was named to the Chicago White Sox coaching staff Monday Mark Parent was working on his first assignment.

Robin Ventura, who never has managed at any level, asked his new bench coach to compile of list of things he would need to think about in running the club.

Parent, the Reading Phillies manager this season, promptly scribbled down six pages of ideas – how the new manager wants to teach rundowns, what kind of signs he’ll use for the running game, what kind of signs he’ll relay to his catcher, and on and on.

“Those are all things we have to get straightened out (before spring training),” the 50-year-old Parent said Monday from his home in Palo Cedro, Calif.

Parent was introduced to the Chicago media Monday, via a teleconference, along with the White Sox’s other new staff members, Joe McEwing and Jeff Manto.

Parent has known for more than a month that he would end up on Ventura’s staff but the White Sox waited until Monday – when Parent’s contract with the Philadelphia Phillies ended – to make the announcement.

Parent, a big leaguer for 13 seasons, never played with Ventura but the two have known each other for years. They once shared the same agent.

“Robin said he wasn’t going to take the job unless I came with it,” Parent said. “He thinks I’m a guy that can be loyal. We’ve taken the last few weeks to start to develop a relationship where I can say whatever I need to say to him.”

“I’ve known Mark for a long time,” Ventura said at Monday’s press conference, “and I’ve seen what he’s done in the minor leagues. I trust his baseball ability.”

Parent showed in his brief stint in the Phillies organization that he works well with young players and that he knows how to win.

In 2010 his Lakewood team won the South Atlantic League championship.

His Reading club was robbed of its top players by injuries and promotions but Parent still managed to guide the Phils to a 74-68 record and the playoffs. He was named the top managing prospect in the Eastern League by Baseball America.

Parent said the Chicago media harped on Ventura’s lack of managing experience, but Parent doesn’t think it’s an issue.

“Robin was more experienced the day he stepped on the field (after his playing career) than most guys,” Parent said.

Parent himself will be relatively new to the big leagues. He never has coached at that level and last played there in 1998.

He said he’s already been studying stats for potential pitcher/hitter matchups but otherwise isn’t particularly concerned about his transition.

“As Robin said, ‘It is just baseball,’ ” Parent said. “It’s not like we’re trying to cure cancer.

“One of the things we have going for us is we’re turning the page (in Chicago). They didn’t have the year they wanted to have, so we’re going to have a clean slate. For a player’s way of thinking, that’s a great way to be.

“Communication will be a big thing, and when I was (managing) in the minor leagues I knew all my players and knew how to talk to them.”

CHICAGO – Pitching coach Don Cooper will take over for departed Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen for the final two games of the season, not bench coach Joey Cora.

Guillen asked to be released from his contract Monday when the team would not grant him an extension.

Cora and general manager Ken Williams exchanged texts and had a phone conversation Tuesday. It was decided that Cora would not come to the park for the two games.

Cora is a close friend and former teammate of Guillen’s with the White Sox and could join Guillen, if — as expected — he takes the manager’s job with the Florida Marlins.

The team also announced that it had agreed to terms on a multi-year contracts with Cooper and first base coach Harold Baines.

Mike Gellinger will serve as bench coach for the final two games.

There is the quick update of the day.

CHICAGO (AP) – Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Raburn ignited the Detroit Tigers offense with back-to-back homers in the second inning as the Detroit Tigers routed the Chicago White Sox 14-4 for their 10th straight win on Monday night.

It’s the Tigers’ first 10-game streak since they won 11 in a row in September 1968 before going on to win the World Series that year.

Raburn finished the game with four hits and three RBIs and Peralta added two hits and three RBIs for the Tigers, who reduced their magic number to six in the AL Central.

Detroit starter Rick Porcello (14-8) coasted to an easy victory. He allowed three runs on six hits in 6 2-3 innings. He was tagged for one of Brent Morel’s two home runs.

The Tigers began their win streak with a sweep of the White Sox during a lopsided three-game series Sept. 3-5 in Detroit. The Tigers outscored Chicago 35-11 to sweep that series and continued to embarrass their divisional rival with a 14-run explosion on Tuesday night.

The game was eerily familiar to the 18-2 loss on Sept. 4 for the White Sox. Chicago pitching allowed 21 hits Monday night compared to the 24 in the 18-2 loss.

White Sox starter John Danks (6-12) lasted five innings allowing eight runs, seven earned on 11 hits.

Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Victor Martinez led off with a single against Danks. One out later, Peralta hit a two-run shot to left giving the Tigers lead. On the next pitch, Raburn hit another ball into left-field seats to make it 3-1.

Leading 3-2 in the third, Delmon Young led off with a single and advanced to third on Miguel Cabrera’s ground-rule double to right. Young scored on Alex Avila’s groundout and Cabrera scored on Peralta’s single. It was Peralta’s 19th of the season and Raburn’s 13th.

The Tigers added to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings. Jackson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch then scored on Young’s RBI single. After a leadoff double by Avila, Raburn doubled off the wall in left-center to score Avila. Raburn advanced to third after center fielder Alejandro De Aza bobbled the ball and ended up scoring on Danks’ wild pitch to make it 8-2.

The Tigers didn’t stop against reliever Josh Kinney. Kinney was tagged for five consecutive singles in the sixth, including RBI singles by Cabrera, Martinez and Avila to give the Tigers a 11-2 lead. After Peralta’s double play ball, Raburn followed with an RBI single for his fourth hit of the night. With bases loaded and two outs, Ramon Santiago, who came in the game in same inning to pinch-run for Magglio Ordonez, hit an RBI single to make it 14-2. The Tigers batter 11 in the inning and scored six runs on eight hits. Kinney somehow lasted the entire inning despite taking a liner off his back from Brandon Inge and giving up six runs on eight hits.

Juan Pierre scored on Dayan Viciedo’s groundout in the first inning and De Aza scored on Gordon Beckham’s groundout in the second inning.

Morel hit his seventh homer of the season off reliever David Pauley in the ninth.

NOTES: Tigers RHP Justin Verlander, who is 20-2 since May 1, is Tuesday’s scheduled starter. Verlander leads the majors in wins with 22 and is 20-2 since May 1. … White Sox RHP Gavin Floyd is Tuesday’s scheduled starter. In 17 starts against Detroit, he is 6-1 with a 3.51 ERA. … Ordonez extended his hitting streak to 13 games. … Jackson extended his hitting streak to 16 games against the White Sox.

MINNEAPOLIS — White Sox rookie right-hander Zach Stewart came oh-so-close to pitching a perfect game in just his eighth career start. Instead, the 24-year-old settled for a one-hitter and a 4-0 Chicago victory Monday night in the second game of a double-header sweep.

Twins third baseman Danny Valencia broke up Stewart’s chances at history in the eighth inning with a leadoff double to right field. In the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Valencia made contact on a 93 mph sinker off the plate. The ball rolled past Chicago right fielder Alejandro De Aza and into the corner, allowing Valencia to get to second.

“It was close, but it’s just one of those things, he made a good swing on the ball, put it in play,” Stewart said of Valencia’s hit. “You’ve just got to tip your hat to him.”

The Target Field crowd of 39,849 stood to acknowledge Stewart’s effort. Meanwhile, Stewart kept rolling.

After Valencia’s leadoff double, catcher Tyler Flowers paid a visit to the mound to talk to Stewart. From there, the righty got three consecutive outs, as he induced a ground ball out, got Luke Hughes to pop out to first and struck out Brian Dinkelman to keep Valencia stranded on third.

“I thought he was going to crack a smirk or something out there, but he was like, ‘All right, let’s get the next guy.’ That’s good to see,” Flowers said of his trip to the mound. “I told him he was doing a good job. Let’s get the complete-game W.’”

That’s exactly what Stewart did. He struck out Jason Repko and pinch-hitter Jason Kubel for the first two outs of the ninth, then got the speedy Ben Revere to ground out to shortstop Alexei Ramirez to end the game and close the books on Stewart’s unlikely one-hitter.

“He didn’t have much stuff that was overpowering,” Valencia said. “He was just locating really well. He had all his pitches going. He was throwing everything for a strike.”

Stewart was aided by a handful of defensive plays, including a pair by Brent Morel. The third baseman snagged a grounder by Twins shortstop Trevor Plouffe in the fourth and made another nice play on Drew Butera’s grounder in the sixth to keep Stewart’s perfect game alive.

“It’s always nice to see a kid perform that way, no matter if it’s a pitcher or a hitter,” said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen — whose team won the opener 2-1, just hours after getting destroyed 18-2 in Detroit.

“A lot of satisfaction to see the way the kid threw the ball, kept the ball down, making very good pitches when he had to make them. I think a few ground balls there that the defense helped him a little bit to stay out of trouble. He threw a tremendous game.”

The Twins’ best chance for a hit prior to Valencia’s double came in the bottom of the seventh, when former MVP Joe Mauer slapped a hard liner to Ramirez at short. It ended as a harmless out and got Stewart past the three-time batting champion in Minnesota’s batting order.

That was also about the time when the Chicago rookie realized what was on the line.

“I would say I probably noticed it in the fifth or sixth,” Stewart said. “But it still wasn’t one of those things where I was like, ‘I’m going for a no-hitter or perfect game.’ Going into the eighth I think was when I finally was like, ‘You’ve got to focus and bear down to get through this.’ “

Stewart, a third-round pick by Cincinnati in 2008, made his major league debut this season on June 16 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He made just three starts for Toronto before he was traded to Chicago along with Jason Frasor for Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahen. Stewart was 1-2 with a 5.86 ERA in six games (four starts) with the White Sox before Monday’s one-hitter. His other win also was against the Twins.

Prior to Monday, Stewart’s longest start was seven innings. That came in his big league debut, when he allowed two runs on seven hits against Baltimore. He also set career highs Monday with 114 pitches and nine strikeouts.

Stewart’s two previous starts entering Monday were not pretty. He allowed seven runs on seven hits against the Angels on Aug. 24, and gave up six runs on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings against the same Twins team Aug. 30.

One start later, however, Stewart clicked on all cylinders against Minnesota.

“They got me pretty good last time,” Stewart said. “They’re a good lineup. I guess I just kept the ball down more today.”

The last perfect game tossed by the White Sox was in 2009, when Mark Buehrle did so against the Tampa Bay Rays. Charlie Robertson is the only other White Sox pitcher to throw a perfect game, accomplishing the feat in 1922 against Detroit.

While Stewart missed out on joining that select club, he gave Chicago a glimpse of what it might have for years to come.

“It’s good to see,” Flowers said. “Hopefully we can put a run together here toward the end. But if not, it’s good to have that kind of arm for the next few years.”

And for the White Sox, Monday’s sweep was a good way to bounce back from Sunday night’s disaster.

“That’s great for us and the ballclub,” Guillen said. “It’s great for them to win a game. In the last couple days, we’ve been beat up pretty good.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mark Buerhle lasted seven innings in another impressive start, and the Chicago White Sox capitalized on an error by young shortstop Alcides Escobar to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on a steamy Monday night.

Buehrle (7-5) hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in his last 14 starts going back to April 22, though his modest record doesn’t indicate how well he’s been pitching.

The veteran left-hander, in the final year of a four-year, $56 million contract, allowed five hits while winning for the first time since June 9. Buehrle struck out three and walked one while throwing 111 pitches in 95-degree temperatures.

Buehrle turned it over to Jesse Crain, who worked a perfect eighth inning. Matt Thornton retired the first two batters of the ninth before Sergio Santos wrapped up the win.

Kyle Davies (1-9) pitched about as well as he has all season for Kansas City and still got saddled with his eighth consecutive loss.

The beleaguered Royals starter set a career high with nine strikeouts in only 5 1/3 innings on Monday night. But Davies was pulled after 106 pitches when the 24-year-old Escobar threw the ball away while trying to start a double play on a routine grounder with the game tied in the sixth inning.

The ball zipped past second baseman Chris Getz and finally was corralled by first baseman Eric Hosmer, but not before Gordon Beckham and A.J. Pierzynski were standing on second and third.

Mark Teahan followed with a chopping groundout to first base that allowed Pierzynski to score the go-ahead run, and Juan Pierre followed with an RBI double that gave Chicago a 4-2 lead.

Beckham tacked on another run with an RBI groundout in the eighth.

RED SOX 15, ORIOLES 10: In Baltimore, Dustin Pedroia doubled in two runs to spark an eight-run eighth inning, and Boston got home runs from Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Josh Reddick.

Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis and Darnell McDonald had three RBI apiece for the Red Sox, who have won 13 of 15. The run includes a 16-inning affair against Tampa Bay on Sunday night in which Boston mustered only five hits.

YANKEES 5, RAYS 4: In St. Petersburg, Fla., Russell Martin drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the ninth inning to lift New York.

Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira, Brett Gardner and Eduardo Nunez also drove in runs for the Yankees, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit to remain 1 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings.
