| Top 11 in 2011: White Sox name Robin Ventura new… | |
KSBY Sports continues its countdown of the top 11 local sports stories of 2011. Our second nominee is the Chicago White Sox decision to hire Arroyo Grande resident Robin Ventura as its 39th manager in club history. The news broke on October 5 and culminated with an introduction in the Windy City on the 11th. The Righetti High graduate returned to a White Sox uniform, sporting number 23 like he did for the first ten seasons of his 16 year Major League career. Tuesday, the 44 year old officially the 39th manager in franchise history. “Being where I was and being able to do this for a franchise that I love and for people that are in the organization that I love, I’m confident and I’m excited about being able to do this,” said Ventura. “Obviously I’m overjoyed about the opportunity to wear a White Sox uniform and to be the manager is an honor and I’m humbled to be able to do it.” The press conference came barely four months after Robin was hired as a special advisor to the team that ended his six year absence from the major leagues. Ventura spent that time with his family living in Arroyo Grande. Robin sees his break as a strength because he is able to look at the game from the outside. “I’ve lived life and I’ve enjoyed it. But I’ve also enjoyed baseball and I think that helps me to be able to see beyond whether a guy got a hit or not,” added Ventura. White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams said Robin was always at the top of his list because of his integrity, character and knowledge for the game. Despite this being Ventura’s first managerial job, the six-time gold glove third baseman is confident he can go from the hot corner to the hot seat. Ventura is the 17th former White Sox player to become the team’s manager. The White Sox went 79-83 last season and are six years removed from a World Series title. The White Sox open the 2012 season April 6 at the home of the Texas Rangers. KSBY will unveil one story every day. Once all eleven nominees are announced, the public will be allowed to vote on the top local sports story of 2011. TOP 11 STORIES OF 2011 Leave your comments on the news below. | Sox lose pitcher Doyle in Rule 5 draft
By Mark Gonzales, Tribune reporter 9:27 a.m. CST, December 8, 2011
DALLAS — Minnesota selected Chicago White Sox pitcher Terry Doyle in the major league phase of Thursday’s Rule 5 draft for $50,000. Doyle, 26, made a strong impression in the Arizona Fall League, where he was 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA for the Mesa Solar Sox. Doyle was scouted in the AFL by Vern Followell, the Twins’ professional scouting director. Doyle was the second player chosen in the Rule 5 draft. If Doyle doesn’t stay with the Twins for the entire season, he can be offered to the Sox for $25,000. “Terry Doyle is a nice pitcher,” said Dan Fabian, the Sox’s director of baseball operations. “He did a nice job in the Fall League. He definitely opened some eyes in the industry. And it was just a decision made, looking at our long term, that we had players we felt we needed to get on the 40-man (roster) before Terry Doyle. “It’s (the) Rule 5 (draft). He still has to get through spring training and still maybe an opportunity to get him back down the road.” Jordan Danks and Brandon Short were not selected. The Sox did not make a pick in the major league and Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft. “All you can do is protect as you see fits best on your 40-man roster,” Fabian said. “And with (general manager) Kenny Williams and (player development director) Buddy Bell and (assistant GM) Rick Hahn, they just felt that was our best situation of the players we decided to add, and Terry Doyle was in Triple-A. And you take that risk that someone may take him, and that happened with the Twins today.”

| White Sox tab Paddy to find international talent | |
White Sox tab Paddy to find international talentBy Scott Merkin / MLB.com | 11/30/11 3:51 PM EST ‘); CHICAGO — If the White Sox hope to derive more baseball talent from Latin America, then Marco Paddy appears to be the man to take them into that area. Paddy, 47, was named by the White Sox as special assistant to the general manager-international operations. For the past five seasons, Paddy served as director of Latin America Operations with the Blue Jays and will now lead the Latin American scouting efforts of Chicago, with an emphasis on international signings. During Paddy’s tenure in Toronto, the Blue Jays signed pitcher Henderson Alvarez, a two-time All-Star Futures Game participant who made his Major League debut in 2011, infielder Adeiny Hechavarria, a former member of the Cuban Junior National Team, pitcher Roberto Osuna, nephew of former White Sox pitcher Antonio Osuna, and catcher Carlos Perez. Hechavarria ranks eighth on MLB.com’s list of Top 10 Blue Jays prospects, while Perez ranks sixth. Prior to joining Toronto, Paddy spent 14 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, serving as an area scout (1993-2002), assistant director of player development (’02-03) and director of Latin America operations (’04-06). The native of Panama was taken by the Braves in the 56th round of the 1988 First-Year Player Draft and played one year in their system. While the White Sox have struggled in establishing a Latin American presence, they have signed Cuban émigrés shortstop Alexei Ramirez and right fielder Dayan Viciedo. Both players are expected to be part of the 2012 squad’s starting lineup. Scott Merkin is a reporter for MLB.com. Read his blog, Merk’s Works, and follow him on Twitter @scottmerkin. | White Sox select ex-player Ventura as new manager
(Reuters) – Former Chicago White Sox All-Star third baseman Robin Ventura was named manager of the Major League Baseball club, the team said on Thursday. Ventura, who was already working as a director of player development for the White Sox, replaces the colourful Ozzie Guillen, who parted ways with the club last month and joined the Florida Marlins. “When I rejoined the White Sox this June, I said this was my baseball home and that part of me never left the White Sox organisation,” Ventura said in statement. “My family and I are thrilled to be returning to Chicago. Managing a Major League Baseball team is a tremendous honor. It’s also an opportunity and a challenge.” Ventura was originally drafted by the White Sox in 1998, and played more than 10 years with the organisation. He also played for the New York Mets, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers during his 16-year career. In 2,079 career games, Ventura had a .267 batting average with 294 home runs and 1,182 RBIs. “I wanted someone who met very specific criteria centered around his leadership abilities,” said White Sox general manager Ken Williams. “Robin Ventura was that man. His baseball knowledge and expertise, his professionalism, his familiarity with the White Sox and Chicago and his outstanding character make him absolutely the right person to lead our clubhouse and this organization into the seasons ahead.” © Copyright (c) Reuters Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.
