Indians-White Sox Preview

After throwing the 21st perfect game in major league history, the Chicago White Sox’s Philip Humber was anything but flawless during his most recent turn in the rotation.

He could have a hard time getting back on track against a Cleveland Indians club set to receive a boost.

Johnny Damon is expected to make his season debut and Shin-Soo Choo could return from injury Wednesday night as Cleveland and Chicago continue a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.

The 38-year-old Damon, who signed a minor league deal April 17, spent the last couple of weeks getting in game shape at the club’s facility in Arizona. The Indians (11-10) made room for him Tuesday by designating infielder Jose Lopez for assignment.

Entering his 18th major league season, Damon hit .261 with 16 homers, 73 RBIs and 19 stolen bases while with Tampa Bay in 2011. He ranks third among active players with 1,643 runs scored and fourth with 516 doubles.

“He’s going to make our team better,” manager Manny Acta said. “He had a pretty solid season last year. He’s been there and done that. He’s got instant credibility with these guys and he’s an outstanding teammate who’s going to help all these younger guys here. We’re excited to add him to the mix.”

Choo, meanwhile, is expected to rejoin the lineup after sitting out the previous six games with a left hamstring injury. He is batting .237 with no homers in 15 games.

Damon and Choo could make things difficult on Humber (1-1, 4.66 ERA), who five days after not allowing a walk or a hit during a 4-0 win at Seattle, was tagged for a career-worst nine runs over five innings of Thursday’s 10-3 loss to Boston.

“This game will humble you, man,” Humber said. “It will make you feel good one day and make you feel real bad the next. You’ve got to take every game as its own game … It was just a bad day. I’ll just chalk it up to one of those days and hopefully next time will be better.”

The right-hander went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA over two September starts against the Indians, who are hitting .339 against him.

Chicago (12-11) took Tuesday’s series opener 7-2 behind Chris Sale’s six strong innings. He helped hold Michael Brantley, Jason Donald, Asdrubal Cabrera, Carlos Santana and Travis Hafner – Cleveland’s 1-2-3-4-5 hitters – hitless in a combined 20 at-bats.

Gordon Beckham, meanwhile, broke out of an 0-for-10 slump with a three-hit effort – including his first homer of the season. The second baseman raised his average 37 points to .190.

“(Beckham) swung well, it’s part of believing in yourself and keep working at it,” manager Robin Ventura said. “He hasn’t gone down that path of not believing in himself.”

Beckham now looks for his momentum to carry over against Josh Tomlin (1-2, 5.48). Aside from throwing eight innings of one-run ball during a 2-1 win at Seattle on April 19, the right-hander has compiled an 8.10 ERA over his other three outings.

Tomlin was roughed up again his last time out, allowing four runs over 4 2-3 innings of Thursday’s 4-2 loss to Kansas City.

“The consistency is not there, for sure, this year,” he told MLB.com. “You can’t go out there and go eight innings and then go four innings or vice versa. You want to stay as consistent as you can for as long as you can.”

In his only career appearance in this series, Tomlin gave up four runs, seven hits and struck out seven over five innings of a 4-2 loss in his season debut April 9.

Chicago White Sox starter Phil Humber pitches 21st…

SEATTLE — Phil Humber had Tommy John surgery before his career even started. He bounced around a bit as he tried to make it in the major leagues.

Now, well, Humber is just perfect.

Humber threw the first perfect game in the majors in almost two years, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 4-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

“What just took place was just awesome,” Humber said.

It was baseball’s 21st perfect game and first since Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay threw one against the Florida Marlins on May 29, 2010. It was the third in White Sox’s history, joining Mark Buehrle against Tampa Bay on July 23, 2009, and Charles Robertson against Detroit on April 30, 1922.

Before Saturday, Humber was best known as one of four prospects the Mets traded to Minnesota for two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana in February 2008. That’s no longer the case — not after tossing the majors’ first no-hitter of the season and the second April perfect game in major league history.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Humber said. “I don’t know what Philip Humber is doing in this list. No idea what my name is doing there, but I’m thankful it’s there.”

He was drafted No. 3 overall by the New York Mets in 2004, one pick after Justin Verlander went to the Detroit Tigers. But Humber was sidelined by elbow-ligament replacement surgery the following year and didn’t win a game in the majors until 2010 with Kansas City.

Humber

was acquired by the White Sox of waivers from the A’s in January 2001 after the A’s, who had claimed Humber off waivers a month earlier from the Royals, needed to clear space on the 40-man roster for Guillermo Moscoso.

With the White Sox lined up on the top step of the dugout, Humber fell behind 3-0 to Michael Saunders leading off the ninth. But he rebounded to strike him out. John Jaso then flied out before Brendan Ryan, another pinch hitter, struck out to end the game.

Ryan took a checked swing and missed at a full-count pitch that was outside and low, but the ball got away from Pierzynski. Ryan lingered outside the batter’s box for a minute, unsure of umpire Brian Runge’s call, and Pierzynski fired to first to complete the play.

“I was more nervous than I was in the World Series,” catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. “There was no build up for this, it just happened. And you want it so bad for the guy on the mound and you want him to have that achievement forever and you want to have him remembered forever. It’s a special thing that Phil did.”

Humber fell to his knees when it was over, and his teammates rushed toward the mound to congratulate him.

“I saw it get away from A.J. and saw the umpire ring him up and at that point, a ton of emotions and a lot of joy and excitement,” Humber said. “Most of all, just gratitude. Just thankful for where I’m at.”

Humber’s wife, Kristan, is nine months’ pregnant and due May 8. He called her after the game.

It was the third no-hitter thrown against Seattle. Mark Langston and Mike Witt of the Angels combined on one on April 11, 1990, and Dwight Gooden of the Yankees threw one on May 14, 1996.

Humber struck out the side in the second while cruising through the first four innings in just 45 pitches. Chone Figgins’ fly ball to left in the fourth was the first ball to reach the outfield. Dustin Ackley followed with a hard liner to right that Alex Rios reached up and stabbed.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber throws…

Chicago’s Philip Humber became the 21st pitcher in Major League Baseball history to throw a perfect game. His White Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 4-0 in Seattle. However, the last batter almost spoiled the perfect game.

With two outs in the ninth and on a 3-2 pitch, Brendan Ryan checked his swing on what would have been ball four. The umpire immediately signaled that Ryan didn’t hold up. The ball, however, got away from the catcher, who scrambled to throw Ryan out at first for the 27th out.

Humber pitched for the New Orleans Zephyrs in 2007, when the team was affiliated with the New York Mets.  In 2008, Humber was traded to Minnesota as part of the Johan Santana deal, but was ultimately released.  He played for the Kansas City Royals in 2009-10 before he was waived and subsequently claimed by Oakland. He was later waived by the Athletics and claimed by the White Sox in Jan. 2011.

Humber was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 29th round of the 2001 MLB Draft, but he did not sign, choosing instead to attend Rice University.

Humber was a first-round selection of the Mets in 2004.

Baseball’s last perfect game belongs to Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay, who threw one against the Florida Marlins on
May 29, 2010. It was the third in White Sox’s history, joining Mark
Buehrle against Tampa Bay on July 23, 2009, and Charles Robertson
against Detroit on April 30, 1922.

What do you guys think about this.

Angels defeat White Sox, 6-2

Albert Pujols

By Mike DiGiovanna

March 6, 2012, 4:54 p.m.

Angels 6, Chicago White Sox 2

AT THE PLATE: Much like Monday, when the Angels packed nine runs and 11 hits in the first four innings against Oakland, the Angels bunched all six of their runs and nine of their 10 hits in the first four innings against the White Sox. Albert Pujols, who started at designated hitter, walked and scored from second on a single in the first and doubled to left-center in the fourth. Jorge Cantu had two hits and two runs batted in, and outfield hopeful Kole Calhoun had two hits and an RBI.

ON THE MOUND: Three right-handers competing for the fifth rotation spot pitched, with Garrett Richards starting and giving up two runs and four hits in two innings, striking out one and walking one. Eric Hurley threw two scoreless innings, giving up one hit, striking out two and walking two. Trevor Bell threw two scoreless innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out one. Reliever Kevin Jepsen, who is coming back from surgery on his right knee, looked strong during a scoreless fifth, giving up one single and striking out two.

EXTRA BASES: Vernon Wells has drawn a walk in each of the two exhibition games. The left fielder drew walks in consecutive games only once last season, June 8 and 10 against Tampa Bay and Kansas City. Ryan Langerhans’ bid for a reserve outfield spot is off to a shaky start. He dropped a fly ball in shallow center Monday against Oakland and bobbled Brent Lillibridge’s double to left for an error that cost a run in the second inning Tuesday.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Jered Weaver faces the Seattle Mariners and right-hander Blake Beavan at noon PST Wednesday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

ON THE AIR: TV — FS West. Radio — 830.
