KSBY Sports continues its countdown of the top 11 local sports stories of 2011. Our second nominee is the Chicago White Sox decision to hire Arroyo Grande resident Robin Ventura as its 39th manager in club history.

The news broke on October 5 and culminated with an introduction in the Windy City on the 11th. The Righetti High graduate returned to a White Sox uniform, sporting number 23 like he did for the first ten seasons of his 16 year Major League career. Tuesday, the 44 year old officially the 39th manager in franchise history. “Being where I was and being able to do this for a franchise that I love and for people that are in the organization that I love, I’m confident and I’m excited about being able to do this,” said Ventura. “Obviously I’m overjoyed about the opportunity to wear a White Sox uniform and to be the manager is an honor and I’m humbled to be able to do it.”

The press conference came barely four months after Robin was hired as a special advisor to the team that ended his six year absence from the major leagues. Ventura spent that time with his family living in Arroyo Grande. Robin sees his break as a strength because he is able to look at the game from the outside. “I’ve lived life and I’ve enjoyed it. But I’ve also enjoyed baseball and I think that helps me to be able to see beyond whether a guy got a hit or not,” added Ventura.

White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams said Robin was always at the top of his list because of his integrity, character and knowledge for the game. Despite this being Ventura’s first managerial job, the six-time gold glove third baseman is confident he can go from the hot corner to the hot seat.

Ventura is the 17th former White Sox player to become the team’s manager. The White Sox went 79-83 last season and are six years removed from a World Series title.

The White Sox open the 2012 season April 6 at the home of the Texas Rangers.

KSBY will unveil one story every day. Once all eleven nominees are announced, the public will be allowed to vote on the top local sports story of 2011.

New Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura believes the direction of his roster will take shape in the next two weeks.

“I’ve kept in contact with Kenny (Williams) when different things come up,” Ventura said Thursday during a conference call. “Obviously, I’d love to hand the ball to John Danks 30-plus times and Gavin Floyd the same thing and have Carlos (Quentin) in right.

“It’s kind of a wish list, but that’s not always going to be able to happen. So I don’t think he knows. I don’t know. And that’s the interesting part about going there.”

Danks, Floyd, Quentin and left-handed reliever Matt Thornton have attracted plenty of interest, and the Sox could add depth to their shallow pool of high level prospects by trading those players.

Ventura will attend next week’s winter meetings in Dallas after he watches Oklahoma State, his alma mater, play host to Oklahoma in a football game that will decide the Big 12 title.

Ventura said he hasn’t given up on fielding a team with Danks, Floyd and Quentin, adding that Williams, his general manager, would like to keep all three players.

“(But) there’s a business side of the game that’s not always fun when a season like last year happened, and it’s part of the game,” Ventura said. “Guys being wanted by other teams is going to come up. You look at it two ways. For me and my situation, it’s nice that people are calling and asking about players. It means we have good players. And I realize who we have. And I hope we have a lot of them back.

“But there’s a time in Dallas we’ll talk about certain people and if it’s worth making that move, I will definitely voice an opinion.”

Ventura hasn’t given up on Mark Buehrle returning but concedes the Sox’s ace has earned the right to become an attractive free agent because of his success, durability and popularity.

Aside from casually meeting third baseman Brent Morel near his Central Coast home in California, Ventura hasn’t reached out to his players yet. That includes slumping slugger Adam Dunn, whom Ventura said he’ll contact sometime after the winter meetings.

“He’s been working out,” Ventura said. “I’ve heard that from Kenny and A.T. (conditioning director Allen Thomas). I don’t feel the need to call him and give him a pep talk. He’s ready to go, motivated and that’s really all.

“When we get closer, I’ll call him. But right now, I’d rather him not worry about baseball. I’d rather him just work out. Most guys start in January, anyway. I’d rather he just be getting in shape rather than him worrying about baseball stuff.”

The biggest issue is when Dunn starts to take batting practice, as he plans to to resume hitting in the off-season after skipping that routine in past winters.

Ventura also gave a big endorsement to leadoff batter/outfielder Alejandro De Aza, based on his observations during his short stint as a special assistant to player development director Buddy Bell.

Ventura said the Sox hadn’t yet discussed moving center fielder Alex Rios to left field.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

The Chicago White Sox officially introduced Central Coast native Robin Ventura on Tuesday as the team’s new manager. The Arroyo Grande resident said he was humbled and honored with the position, and vowed to be himself.

And I still feel confident that I can do it.”

Ventura played for a list of managers that includes Bobby Valentine, Jim Tracy and Joe Torre. He plans to use his experiences with them in his new role. He said he received plenty of congratulatory calls from former teammates and veterans over the last few days. “The best piece of advice is be yourself and that’s going to be pretty simple for me because I don’t plan on changing a whole lot.”

One could say it is the start of the next chapter in Ventura’s South Side Story.

Ventura is the 17th former White Sox player to become the team’s manager. The White Sox went 79-83 last season and are six years removed from a World Series title.

CHICAGO — Robin Ventura was easing his way back into baseball with the Chicago White Sox. Hired as an adviser to player development director Buddy Bell in June, it afforded him just the right mix of work and time with his family.

When Ozzie Guillen asked out of his contract near the end of the season and eventually ended up in Florida, Ventura was as surprised as anyone.

And when general manager Ken Williams and Bell talked to him and broached the possibility of succeeding Guillen, he was initially taken aback.

He mulled it over, discussed it with his wife and after a face-to-face meeting with Williams decided it was the right move, facing a challenge in a place where he was comfortable and well-liked for a decade. An offer, it turned out, he couldn’t and didn’t refuse.

“Not having managed before, I did have apprehension,” the former White Sox star third baseman said in a conference call Thursday. “(Williams) never tried to talk me into it. It was more of what was going to be there and be available. Ultimately it was going to be my decision.”

Ventura, known for his slick fielding, clutch hitting and left-handed power, has a good sense of humor and a well-rounded perspective on the game.

Fiery as Guillen? Nope. But he’s had his moments, too.

Who can forget the time he charged the mound after Nolan Ryan plunked him with a pitch in 1993? Once there, Ryan applied a quick headlock and administered several punches before players from both teams reached the confrontation.

And Ventura was tough as a player, too, surviving a grotesque injury in 1997 when he fractured and dislocated ankle in a spring training slide.

Now he’s the 39th White Sox manager overall, a list that includes 17 who played for the team.

“I think there is a challenge there, getting back into the game,” he said.

“I do have a passion for it. I do have a passion for this team and this city. I’m not one to really back away from a lot of things. … The passion is there to do it, I was asked to do it. I’m honored.”

Guillen was released from his contract with one year remaining after eight seasons with the White Sox and immediately was hired by the Florida Marlins as their manager.

“That whole thing surprised me as much as anybody. I figured he would be managing here a long time,” Ventura said of Guillen, his friend and former teammate.

The 44-year-old Ventura played for a host of managers who could influence his style — Jeff Torborg, Gene Lamont, Jerry Manuel, Bobby Valentine, Joe Torre and Jim Tracy.

“I run the gamut on different styles and smart baseball men and just different ways to communicate and get guys to play,” he said.

What kind of manger will he be? Yet to be determined. He said he wants players who care and are accountable.

Konerko joined the White Sox in 1999, after Ventura finished a 10-year run as Chicago’s third baseman in 1998. Though they just missed being teammates, Konerko said he’s gotten to know Ventura a bit over the years at team functions.

And he’s convinced that Ventura’s lack of managerial experience won’t be a hindrance once he gets rolling.

“As far as how a clubhouse runs and all that kinds of stuff, I don’t think there is any concern,” konerko said. “Robin Ventura has been in a clubhouse most of his whole life. I think most of the older players are looking forward to it as far as conversing with him and picking his brain at what he thinks makes a good team.”

And, if Ventura needs help during the game, he’ll be able to delegate, especially with veteran pitching coach Don Cooper returning with a multiyear extension, as well as first base coach Harold Baines.

Ventura’s style, once it develops, will almost certainly be different than that of Guillen, the outspoken — often outrageous — skipper who led the team to its first World Series in 88 years in 2005.

Guillen, who had his request for an extension denied, was released from the final year on his contract after eight seasons and will be running the Marlins next season. Guillen also had no managerial experience when he was hired after serving as Florida’s third base coach during its World Series championship run in 2003.

Ventura has not been a major league coach, although he was hired in June to be an advisor to player development director Buddy Bell.

Ventura was a popular player with the White Sox before completing his career with the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers. He’s returning to the organization that drafted him in the first round in 1988.

Konerko characterized the 44-year-old Ventura as an easy person to talk to but added that, from stories he’s heard over the years, the new White Sox manager is not afraid to stand up or confront someone. After all, he did charge the mound against Nolan Ryan in 1993.

And he doesn’t expect Ventura to be shy about expressing what he feels — even if it’s not as in the same outlandish manner as Guillen.

“Just in talking to people who played with him and all that, I think he’ll be the kind of guy, like Ozzie, who will call you out on a carpet in front of people and be a little bit more abrasive than everybody thinks,” Konerko said.

It’s still not clear whether the White Sox with change its approach with Ventura as manager and try to slice payroll and use more young players after last year’s 79-83 disappointment.

The 35-year-old Konerko, who batted .300 last season with 31 homers and 105 RBIs, has two more seasons left on a three-year, $37.5 million deal. He said he understands if the team decided to go in that direction, adding that Ventura could perhaps help some of the younger players develop.

He also expects Ventura, who was a little apprehensive when first approached about the job by general manager Ken Williams, to have a plan mapped out by spring training.

“Robin is close to the organization. He’s been closer the last few months and been involved a little bit more doing some stuff,” Konerko said. “I think he knows what he’s getting himself into and I think he knows what is going on. … He’s not coming into this blind.”

The Chicago White Sox on Thursday announced that Robin Ventura has been named the teams new manager after Ozzie Guillen left the organization last week.

The 44-year-old former player agreed to the multiyear deal with the club after working over the last season as a special advisor to director of player development Buddy Bell.

In a statement about the decision team GM Ken Williams said:

“When I met with the media as our season ended, I identified one person at the very top of my managerial list.” Williams went on to add, “I wanted someone who met very specific criteria centered around his leadership abilities. Robin Ventura was that man. His baseball knowledge and expertise, his professionalism, his familiarity with the White Sox and Chicago and his outstanding character make him absolutely the right person to lead our clubhouse and this organization into the seasons ahead.”

Ventura actually wasn’t sold on the idea until he met with Williams:

“There was a lot of (apprehension) when I first went home to talk to my wife about it,” Ventura said. “It turned us upside down. I have a good thing going and it was easy getting back into the game doing what I was doing. I had the freedom to coach and come back home. I think there was a lot of comfort in talking to the family that this was the White Sox, which for us is an extended family.”

A former Chicago White Sox player from 1989-1998, Venture played in the Bigs for 16 seasons including the 1999-2001 season with the New York Mets, a season with the New York Yankees and a career finishing stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he ended his player career in 2004.

Do you think Ventura is the right decision for manager of the Chicago White Sox?

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

CHICAGO – Former All-Star third baseman Robin Ventura is replacing the fiery Ozzie Guillen as manager of the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox say that Ventura agreed to a multiyear deal on Thursday.

A longtime star with the White Sox, Ventura was hired by the club last June as a special adviser to director of player development Buddy Bell.

Ventura admitted the offer surprised him, especially since he hadn’t managed previously, but he knew it a move he wanted to make.

“I think there is a challenge there, getting back into the game,” he said in a conference call.

Ventura became one of the greatest collegiate players in history, batting .428 in three seasons at Oklahoma State, including a 58-game hitting streak that remains the Division I record. He was a three-time All-American and helped the Cowboys reach the College World Series championship game in 1987.

CLEVELAND (AP)—Asdrubal Cabrera(notes) has become the Cleveland Indians’ best
offensive shortstop in more than 60 years.

Cabrera drove in five runs and Jeanmar Gomez(notes) won his fifth straight start
for Cleveland as the Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 11-2 on Thursday night
to remain in second place in the AL Central.

Cabrera hit a three-run homer and two-run single, tying his career-high for
RBIs and giving him 92 for the season. That’s the most by an Indians shortstop
since Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau drove in 106 on the way to winning AL MVP
honors and leading Cleveland to its last World Series title—in 1948.

“It’s remarkable what he’s been doing,” Indians manager Manny Acta said.
“What a night! This guy has been putting together some really good numbers.”

Cabrera’s seventh-inning homer put Cleveland ahead 8-2 and was his 25th of
the year, one more than the previous club record for a shortstop by Jhonny
Peralta(notes) in 2005.

“I’m excited and pretty happy about that,” said Cabrera, who entered this
year with 18 homers in 387 career games. “I don’t think too much about (getting
100 RBIs). I’ll just do the best I can and after the season see what numbers I
get.”

Travis Hafner(notes) reached a milestone number, too, singling for his 1,000th
career hit, and Kosuke Fukudome(notes) added three RBIs as Cleveland moved 1 1/2 games
ahead of the White Sox.

Hafner, in and out of the lineup due to a series of injuries the past four
seasons, was grateful for the fan ovation after being replaced by pinch-runner
Cord Phelps(notes) following his single.

“It was a very special moment,” Hafner said. “I never thought about it
until somebody said before the game I had 999. Then I thought about guys getting
3,000 hits. That’s 200 for 15 years, just mind-boggling.”

Gomez (5-2) gave up one earned run and four hits over six innings. Since
being recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Aug. 30, the right-hander is 5-0 with a
1.80 ERA.

“We’re not handing out jobs in September, but he’s put himself in the
mix,” Acta said of Gomez’s chances of joining the Indians’ rotation in 2012.
“He threw well.”

Fukudome’s two-out, two-run single off Philip Humber(notes) (9-9) in the fifth
inning broke a 2-2 tie.

Fukudome drove Humber’s second pitch of the game over the wall in right for
his fifth homer. Four pitches later, Jason Kipnis(notes) hit his seventh for a 2-0
lead.

“I have never had that happen to me, the first two batters of the game
going deep,” Humber said.

It was the fourth time in Indians history and only the second time at home
that Cleveland opened a game with two homers. Graig Nettles and Vada Pinson did
it on June 19, 1971, at old Cleveland Stadium.

An error by Cabrera at shortstop helped Chicago tie it at 2 in the fifth.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Juan Pierre(notes) singled home
Alejandro De Aza(notes). Cabrera took the throw from right fielder Fukudome and threw
wildly trying to get Brent Morel(notes) at third. Third baseman Jack Hannahan(notes) tracked
down the ball and fired home, but Morel slid in safely with an unearned run.

The White Sox almost caught a break in the bottom half. Humber had retired
14 straight until Hannahan drew a two-out walk and apparently scored on a
slicing drive down the left-field line by Ezequiel Carrera(notes) that looked like an
RBI triple. Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen argued that a fan reached over a
railing and touched the ball. The umpires huddled, agreed, and sent Hannahan
back to third, ruling that Carrera got a ground-rule double.

Fukudome’s soft line drive to left scored them both anyway.

Humber gave up seven runs and eight hits over six innings.

“He made a couple of bad pitches,” Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said.
“He got ahead in the count and left a couple of balls up and it hurt him. Most
of the time he has been out there he has given us a chance to win.”

Notes: Chicago won the season series 11-7. … White Sox SS Omar Vizquel(notes) and
Cleveland DH Jim Thome(notes) exchanged the lineup cards—a first for both former
Indians teammates who have a combined 44 seasons and 5,388 games in the majors.
“I hope it’s not the last time we see these guys on the same field somewhere,”
Guillen said. “The next stop for both is the Hall of Fame, but they can still
play.” … The Indians will salute Thome on Friday for surpassing 600 career
homers and his other contributions. Before Thursday’s game, Acta said the
41-year-old Thome would start at DH in Hafner’s place Friday. “Even if Hafner
hits three homers tonight, Jimmy is playing,” Acta said. “Well, maybe three
homers would change my mind.” … The last time the Indians hit two homers to
open a game, Grady Sizemore(notes) and Casey Blake(notes) did it in Kansas City on May 23,
2007. … RHP Justin Masterson(notes) (12-10) will oppose RHP Carl Pavano(notes) (8-13) on
Friday night when Cleveland opens a four-game home series against Minnesota. …
The White Sox open a three-game series at home against Kansas City on Friday
with RHP Zach Stewart(notes) (2-5) facing Royals LHP Bruce Chen(notes) (11-8).

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The White Sox gave the Indians fits throughout the season series. But the Tribe had plenty of fun at their expense in the finale Thursday night.

The Indians received quality performances from numerous players in posting an 11-2 victory at Progressive Field.

The Indians (77-78) lead the White Sox (76-80) by 1 1/2 games for second place in the AL Central behind champion Detroit.

Chicago won the season series, 11-7, including a 15-10 victory in the season opener April 1 in Cleveland. The closer was pretty much all Cleveland thanks in large part to:

• Asdrubal Cabrera. He hit a three-run homer and two-run single. The homer set a franchise single-season record by a shortstop (25).

• Kosuke Fukudome. He went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk and three RBI. He also made a diving catch.

• Jeanmar Gomez. He worked six strong innings to win his fifth straight start and improve to 5-2. Gomez gave up the two runs (one earned) on four hits — and looked good doing it. He ran his fastball in on lefties and had tight spin on his slider.

• Travis Hafner. He notched his 1,000th career hit and was responsible for two runs scored.

• Jason Kipnis. He followed Fukudome’s blast in the first with his own against White Sox righty Phil Humber, giving the Indians back-to-back homers to begin a first inning for just the fourth time in franchise history.

• Gomez allowed one hit through three — a two-out single up the middle by Tribe nemesis Juan Pierre in the third. It was Pierre’s 21st hit against Cleveland this season. The next batter, Alexei Ramirez, broke his bat and grounded to Gomez.

The White Sox scored two in the fifth to tie the score, 2-2. One of the runs was unearned because of Cabrera’s throwing error. Pierre — surprise — delivered an RBI single.

The Indians regained the advantage in their half of the fifth. Jack Hannahan drew a two-out walk and was speeding around the bases as Ezequiel Carrera lined a triple down the left-field line. As the ball kicked up into the railing, Hannahan scored easily.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen argued that the play should have been ruled a ground-rule double and Hannahan returned to third. The umpires huddled and agreed.

Fukudome made sure it did not hurt Cleveland by dumping a single into left-center. Pierre and his pop-gun arm had no shot to throw out Carrera.

Hafner’s heads-up running helped make it 5-2 in the sixth. He tagged from second to third on a one-out fly ball, putting him in prime position to score on Matt LaPorta’s slow roller through the hole at second.

The Indians opened it up in the seventh. Cabrera hit a three-run homer, his 25th in 589 official at-bats. Cabrera set the franchise single-season record for homers by a shortstop, passing Jhonny Peralta, whose 24 came in 2005.

Last season, Cabrera hit three homers in 381 at-bats.

The next batter, Hafner, ripped a double to right-center — his 1,000th career hit. He received a standing ovation and was applauded again as he exited the field for pinch-runner Cord Phelps. Phelps scored on Grady Sizemore’s single.

Cabrera hit a two-run single in the eighth, matching his career-best. It is the fourth time this season that an Indian has driven in five runs in a game.

The Tribe bullpen worked three hitless innings.

Neither Indians DH Jim Thome nor White Sox infielder Omar Vizquel played, but they did exchange lineup cards before the game.

   			CLEVELAND –

A long day ended on a high note for the Chicago White Sox.

Alexei Ramirez’s seventh-inning single broke the game’s final tie and led Chicago to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, giving the White Sox a split of the day-night doubleheader.

Asdrubal Cabrera’s solo home run and six strong innings from Fausto Carmona gave Cleveland a 4-3 win in the first game.

The teams, who were eliminated from the AL Central race last week when Detroit clinched the division, are battling for second place. The Indians lead the White Sox by 1½ games.

Trailing 4-0 in the fifth, Chicago scored a run in the fifth and two runs in both the sixth and seventh.

“It made the day a little bit nicer,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “We were down right away and I thought the whole day was going to be very long. We fought back and won the game.”

Matt Thornton (2-5) pitched 1 1-3 innings for the win in the second game and Chris Sale went the final 1 2-3 innings for his seventh save.

Cleveland took a 4-3 lead into the seventh before Chicago rallied against rookie reliever Zach Putnam (0-1). Tyler Flowers started the rally with a single and took third on Gordon Beckham’s third double of the game. Juan Pierre’s groundout tied the game before Ramirez’s bloop single to center over a drawn-in infield gave Chicago the lead.

Beckham became the first White Sox player to have three doubles in a game since Aaron Rowand in 2005.

“It’s one of those days I’ve been searching for,” Beckham said. “Unfortunately, it comes with eight games left. I’m glad we came back and won that game. We showed some fight.”

“It’s nice to see this kid swing the bat the way he did,” Guillen said of Beckham. “He was kind of down the last couple of days. We’re all glad he got those hits.”

Both teams started rookies in the second game. Dylan Axelrod, making his second major-league start, allowed four runs in 4 2-3 innings for the White Sox while Zach McAllister, in his third big-league start, gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings for the Indians.

Cleveland used four rookie pitchers in the second game, which led to problems finding the plate. Putnam hit Paul Konerko in the hip in the seventh inning. Josh Judy hit Beckham in the back and Ramirez in the shoulder in the ninth. Guillen wasn’t happy seeing so many of his players get drilled, but didn’t think it was intentional.

“I don’t think they were throwing at them,” he said. “It’s a bunch of kids up from the minor leagues. You can do nothing about it. All you can do is run to first base and get the trainers.”

Cleveland managed one hit off Axelrod through three innings before scoring four times in the fourth. Jim Thome’s RBI single gave Cleveland the lead. Matt LaPorta’s run-scoring double and sacrifice flies by Grady Sizemore and Jack Hannahan completed the scoring.

McAllister held the White Sox scoreless until the fifth when Beckham’s RBI double scored Chicago’s first run. Alejandro De Aza’s two-run double off Rafael Perez in the sixth cut the lead to one.

Cabrera strained his back while batting in the eighth inning of the first game and didn’t play in the second game.

Carmona (7-15) allowed three runs in six innings and won for the first time since Aug. 17.

Travis Hafner and Kosuke Fukudome also homered off Gavin Floyd (12-12), who hasn’t won since Aug. 29.

Hafner’s two-run homer in the first gave Cleveland the lead, but Chicago tied the game in the second on Adam Dunn’s RBI double and De Aza’s run-scoring single.

Cabrera’s home run put Cleveland ahead and was his 24th of the season. Cabrera, who entered Saturday’s game against Minnesota in an 0-for-20 slump, has eight hits in his last 13 at-bats. He leads the Indians with 87 RBIs, eclipsing his previous career high of 68 in 2009.

“I’m really happy with what I’ve done, but I haven’t thought too much about it,” he said. “I think we’ve had a good season, and it’s not over yet.”

NOTES: The first game was the makeup of a July 23 rainout at Progressive Field. … Guillen says LHP Mark Buehrle will start Wednesday night. Buehrle (11-9, 3.74 ERA) has sore biceps after being hit with a ball in his last start. RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (4-2, 4.56) will start for the Indians. … Guillen played most of his regulars in Tuesday’s first game. … The Indians are playing nine games in seven days on their final homestand of the season. Cleveland played a makeup game with Seattle on Monday and will play another day-night doubleheader against Minnesota on Saturday. … The Indians recalled RHP Corey Kluber from Triple-A Columbus.

The Indians lead the White Sox by 1 1/2 games.

Matt Thornton (2-5) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win in the second game and Chris Sale went the final 1 2/3 innings for his seventh save.

Both teams started rookies in the second game. Dylan Axelrod, making his second major-league start, allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings for the White Sox while Zach McAllister, in his third big-league start, gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings for the Indians.

Singles by Jason Donald and Carlos Santana started the inning. Thome singled sharply past a diving Paul Konerko at first base to score Donald. After Shelley Duncan walked to load the bases, Sizemore’s fly ball to left was deep enough to score Santana.

LaPorta’s line drive to right was misjudged by Dayan Viciedo, who got a bad jump and broke back too late to make the catch. Hannahan’s fly ball to center scored the inning’s final run.

McAllister held the White Sox scoreless until the fifth when Beckham’s RBI double scored Chicago’s first run. Alejandro De Aza’s two-run double off Rafael Perez in the sixth cut the lead to one.

Cleveland’s pitchers hit three Chicago batters in the second game.

Hafner’s two-run homer in the first gave Cleveland the lead, but Chicago tied the game in the second on Adam Dunn’s RBI double and Alejandro De Aza’s run-scoring single.

Cabrera’s home run put Cleveland ahead and was his 24th of the season. Cabrera, who entered Saturday’s game against Minnesota in an 0-for-20 slump, has eight hits in his last 13 at-bats.

NOTES: The first game was the makeup of a July 23 rainout at Progressive Field. … White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen says LHP Mark Buehrle will start Wednesday night. Buehrle (11-9, 3.74 ERA) has sore biceps after being hit with a ball in his last start. RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (4-2, 4.56) will start for the Indians. … Guillen played most of his regulars in Tuesday’s first game. … The White Sox are 9-6 against the Indians with three games to play in the season series. … Hannahan was a defensive replacement at third base in the eighth inning of the first game, his first appearance since straining his left calf Sept. 4. He started the second game. … C Lou Marson struck out in all three at-bats. … The Indians are playing nine games in seven days on their final homestand of the season. Cleveland played a makeup game with Seattle on Monday and will play another day-night doubleheader against Minnesota on Saturday. … The Indians recalled RHP Corey Kluber from Triple-A Columbus.

Ozzie Guillen has no shortage of opinions, and Chicago’s outspoken manager has never been afraid to voice them.

So when Guillen says he trash-talked Royals starter Bruce Chen before his team’s game against the Royals on Sunday — and it wouldn’t be the first time — well, it’s not that difficult to believe, is it?

“I told Bruce Chen, ‘We’re going to kick your butt today,’ ” Guillen admitted gleefully, moments after his White Sox’s 10-5 victory at Kauffman Stadium. “I did. Ask him.”

But Chen, who had already spoken to reporters after the game, was long gone, presumably headed home after a loss that snapped the Royals’ seven-game winning streak.

“We were playing good,” Chen said earlier. “I wanted to keep it going.”

It would have been nice to do it against the White Sox, a team he’d held to two runs in 20 innings this season. But Chen, who dropped to 11-8, could not weave his magic again, as the White Sox got nine hits and scored four runs in 5 1/3 innings against him.

“Bruce went out and battled like he always does,” said rookie third baseman Mike Moustakas, who was part of a lineup that collected 15 hits but stranded 12 runners. “We just weren’t able to push those runs across when we needed to.”

After the White Sox took a 4-0 lead in the fourth, it seemed as if the Royals ended every inning with a wasted scoring opportunity. For instance, they cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth with an RBI single by Yamaico Navarro and an RBI grounder by Billy Butler, but White Sox starter John Danks escaped the inning when he got Eric Hosmer to pop out with two on.

The same thing happened in the sixth, when an RBI triple by Johnny Giavotella cut the deficit to one and put the game-tying run on third with no outs. But Danks, 7-12, took control again, retiring the next three batters.

Solo homers by Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski in the seventh off Louis Coleman put the White Sox ahead 6-3, though the Royals cut the deficit to two with an RBI single by Hosmer in the bottom of the inning. However, Jesse Crain and Chris Sale teamed up to strike out the last two batters with two on, preserving the lead.

From there, the White Sox got some help. A two-out RBI single by Konerko made the score 7-4, but left fielder Alex Gordon fielded the ball with a chance to nail Alexei Ramirez — who was racing from first to third — and end the inning. But Navarro, the shortstop, failed to cover the bag, and Pierzynski came up and blasted a three-run homer off Jesse Chavez that put the White Sox ahead 10-4.

“That changed the whole inning,” said Royals manager Ned Yost, referring to Navarro’s failure to cover third. “We get out of there with one run given up instead of four.”

The mistake proved costly in the ninth, when the Royals mounted a rally that included an RBI single by Giavotella that put runners on first and second with only one out.

But the Royals went down with a whimper — as was the custom all game long — as Sergio Santos retired Moustakas and Brayan Peña, clinching the victory for the White Sox, who got the same number of hits as the Royals (15), but got them at key times.

And for Chicago’s outspoken manager, who lambasted his team in July for its continuous struggles against Chen, it was a long overdue result.

“The offense swung the bats good, especially when we faced a guy we couldn’t even touch in the past,” Guillen said.

“It’s about time.”

Pierzynski homered twice among his four hits and drove in four runs as the Chicago White Sox snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Royals on Sunday.

The Royals were looking for their first winning streak of more than seven games since starting the 2003 9-0.

The Royals are hitting .380 on this homestand.

“And we still lost,” Royals manager Ned Yost said of the 15 hits.

Bruce Chen, who broke Pierzynski’s wrist with a pitch on Aug. 12, took the loss. He allowed four runs on nine hits in 5 1-3 innings.

“I like how I was mixing in my pitches well, but unfortunately we didn’t come out with a win,” Chen said. “I’m kinda bummed out that I lost the game because we’re on a roll and playing really good, and I wanted to keep it going.”

Chen gave up two singles to Pierzynski, who homered in the seventh and eighth innings off relievers Louis Coleman and Jesse Chavez.

“Bruce pitched OK,” Yost said. “He kept us in the game, contained the damage pretty good. Louie gave up the two back-to-back homers. Jesse was the freshest arm we had down there. I tried to squeak through the eighth with him and he got two quick outs then it was kind of boom, boom, boom from that point and it got away from us.”

The Royals, who stranded a dozen runners, trailed 4-3 going into the seventh.

“We had a lot of opportunities to pick up runs and we didn’t do it,” Yost said. “And those are runs that would have made a difference in this game.”

Paul Konerko and Pierzynski had back-to-back homers leading off the seventh against Coleman. It was Konerko’s 30th home run. Konerko, who also singled home Juan Pierre in the eighth for his 103rd RBI, has reached 30 home runs and 100 RBIs for the fifth time in his career.

The White Sox took a 4-0 lead in ending the Royals’ seven-game winning streak, Kansas City’s longest run since notching seven in a row Sept. 13-18, 2008.

Pierzynski’s three-run homer off Chavez in the eighth struck the right-field pole. It was Pierzynski’s fourth career multihomer game — the past two have been at Kauffman Stadium, his previous coming July 9, 2010.

“It’s one of those things that when I came into the season that I kind of felt like that’s my job, to drive in runs,” Konerko said.

Brent Morel’s double in the second scored Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo, who had both singled.

In the fourth, Adam Dunn doubled home Alex Rios for his first extra-base hit against a left-hander, in his 89th at-bat this season. Dunn stopped at third on Viciedo’s single and scored on Gordon Beckham’s sacrifice fly.

The Royals scored a pair of runs in the fifth with Yamaico Navarro and Billy Butler getting the RBIs. Johnny Giavotella’s triple in the sixth scored Jeff Francoeur, cutting the White Sox lead to 4-3. Giavotella’s third hit in the ninth scored Eric Hosmer.

Hosmer, who had also three hits, had an RBI single in the seventh.

Left-hander John Danks (7-12), who was 0-3 with a 10.91 ERA in his previous three starts allowed 10 hits and four runs in six-plus innings.

Bruce Chen (11-8) took the loss and is 1-3 in four September starts. He allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks in 5 1-3 innings.

NOTES: Beckham, who leads AL second baseman with a .992 fielding percentage, was charged with his second error in 49 games when he mishandled Francoeur’s bouncer in the sixth. … Navarro made his first start at shortstop For Royals. He had started five games at third base. … Pierre leads the AL with 43 infield hits and 19 bunt hits. … The Royals and White Sox are both off Monday. The White Sox play a doubleheader Tuesday at Cleveland and will start Gavin Floyd and Dylan Axelrod. … RHP Luis Mendoza, who was the Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year after going 12-5 with a 2.18 ERA for Triple-A Omaha, will start Tuesday against Detroit, the AL Central champions. It will be Mendoza’s first big league start since Aug. 13, 2008, while with Texas.

CHICAGO (AP) – Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Raburn ignited the Detroit Tigers offense with back-to-back homers in the second inning as the Detroit Tigers routed the Chicago White Sox 14-4 for their 10th straight win on Monday night.

It’s the Tigers’ first 10-game streak since they won 11 in a row in September 1968 before going on to win the World Series that year.

Raburn finished the game with four hits and three RBIs and Peralta added two hits and three RBIs for the Tigers, who reduced their magic number to six in the AL Central.

Detroit starter Rick Porcello (14-8) coasted to an easy victory. He allowed three runs on six hits in 6 2-3 innings. He was tagged for one of Brent Morel’s two home runs.

The Tigers began their win streak with a sweep of the White Sox during a lopsided three-game series Sept. 3-5 in Detroit. The Tigers outscored Chicago 35-11 to sweep that series and continued to embarrass their divisional rival with a 14-run explosion on Tuesday night.

The game was eerily familiar to the 18-2 loss on Sept. 4 for the White Sox. Chicago pitching allowed 21 hits Monday night compared to the 24 in the 18-2 loss.

White Sox starter John Danks (6-12) lasted five innings allowing eight runs, seven earned on 11 hits.

Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Victor Martinez led off with a single against Danks. One out later, Peralta hit a two-run shot to left giving the Tigers lead. On the next pitch, Raburn hit another ball into left-field seats to make it 3-1.

Leading 3-2 in the third, Delmon Young led off with a single and advanced to third on Miguel Cabrera’s ground-rule double to right. Young scored on Alex Avila’s groundout and Cabrera scored on Peralta’s single. It was Peralta’s 19th of the season and Raburn’s 13th.

The Tigers added to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings. Jackson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch then scored on Young’s RBI single. After a leadoff double by Avila, Raburn doubled off the wall in left-center to score Avila. Raburn advanced to third after center fielder Alejandro De Aza bobbled the ball and ended up scoring on Danks’ wild pitch to make it 8-2.

The Tigers didn’t stop against reliever Josh Kinney. Kinney was tagged for five consecutive singles in the sixth, including RBI singles by Cabrera, Martinez and Avila to give the Tigers a 11-2 lead. After Peralta’s double play ball, Raburn followed with an RBI single for his fourth hit of the night. With bases loaded and two outs, Ramon Santiago, who came in the game in same inning to pinch-run for Magglio Ordonez, hit an RBI single to make it 14-2. The Tigers batter 11 in the inning and scored six runs on eight hits. Kinney somehow lasted the entire inning despite taking a liner off his back from Brandon Inge and giving up six runs on eight hits.

Juan Pierre scored on Dayan Viciedo’s groundout in the first inning and De Aza scored on Gordon Beckham’s groundout in the second inning.

Morel hit his seventh homer of the season off reliever David Pauley in the ninth.

NOTES: Tigers RHP Justin Verlander, who is 20-2 since May 1, is Tuesday’s scheduled starter. Verlander leads the majors in wins with 22 and is 20-2 since May 1. … White Sox RHP Gavin Floyd is Tuesday’s scheduled starter. In 17 starts against Detroit, he is 6-1 with a 3.51 ERA. … Ordonez extended his hitting streak to 13 games. … Jackson extended his hitting streak to 16 games against the White Sox.
