Lamont last to interview for Red Sox manager job

BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox are interviewing Gene Lamont for their managerial opening.

The former Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox manager is the last of five candidates scheduled to interview. New Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has already brought in Torey Lovullo, Sandy Alomar Jr., Pete Mackanin and Dale Sveum.

The Red Sox have been looking for a manager since parting ways with Terry Francona after the team’s 7-20 record in September left them out of the playoffs for the second straight year.

Lamont has been the third base coach for the Detroit Tigers since 2006. He also had that job with Boston in 2001.

He managed the White Sox from 1992-95 and Pirates from 1997-2000.

What do you guys think about this.

Tigers maul White Sox 18-2 to sweep series

DETROIT (Reuters) – The Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep with a humiliating 18-2 pounding of the Chicago White Sox on Sunday to maintain their 6.5-game lead in the American League Central division.

Marching toward their first division title since 1987, the Tigers compiled 24 hits as they stormed to an 18-0 lead before Chicago salvaged two runs in the ninth to avoid the shutout.

Detroit (78-62), who hauled in an 8-1 deficit to defeat the White Sox with a walk-off home run in the ninth inning on Saturday, needed no such theatrics to bury their division foes as they scored three runs in the third, five in the fourth and seven in the sixth to run away with the contest.

Cabrera smashed a home run and four RBIs, Andy Dirks came off the bench to record four RBIs and Detroit starter Max Scherzer (14-8) tossed seven scoreless innings for the win.

Chicago’s Mark Buehrle was roughed up for 10 hits and eight runs in less than four innings before watching his bullpen fail to stem the offensive tide.

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – Up 16-0 after six innings - the Detroit Tigers roll to an easy 18-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday night.

As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - the Tigers sweep the series from Chicago and leave the White Sox 8 1/2 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.

Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in four runs, and the Detroit Tigers finished a three-game sweep of Chicago in emphatic fashion Sunday.

Max Scherzer (14-8) allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings, and Alex Avila had a career-high four hits for Detroit, which leads the AL Central by 6 1/2 games heading into a three-game series at second-place Cleveland.

Mark Buehrle (11-7) allowed seven earned runs in 3 1-3 innings.

The Tigers trailed 8-1 in the fifth Saturday before rallying to win 9-8. They’d scored 26 consecutive runs and led 18-0 Sunday when the White Sox finally scored two in the ninth.

Verlander Goes For His 21st Win

TIME: 07:05 P.M. EST
VENUE: Comerica Park

Justin Verlander has been unbeatable since the last time he faced the Chicago White Sox at home.

The Detroit Tigers ace looks to win his ninth straight start and help the AL Central leaders pull further away from one of their pursuers when they host the White Sox on Friday night.

Verlander (20-5, 2.38 ERA) became the first pitcher to win 20 games before September since 2002 on Saturday, defeating Minnesota 6-4. He gave up four runs over six-plus innings in one of his poorer outings during this streak.

The right-hander, who leads the majors with 218 strikeouts, has posted a 2.61 ERA over his last eight starts.

“To get to 20 at this point in the season, obviously you can’t do it all on your own,” Verlander said. “These guys have helped me along the way and today was a good example of that.”

Verlander yielded five runs over six innings of an 8-2 loss to the White Sox (68-66) on July 15, just before his run started. He beat them 11 days later with eight innings of four-run ball, and is 3-1 with a 4.03 ERA in four starts against them this year.

He has gone 8-1 with a 2.67 ERA versus Chicago over the past three seasons.

Paul Konerko and Carlos Quentin have homered twice against Verlander this year, although Konerko is a .152 career hitter against him. Struggling Adam Dunn is 2 for 13 with nine strikeouts against Verlander in 2011.

Detroit (75-62) leads Chicago and Cleveland by 5 1/2 games going into this three-game set. The Tigers and White Sox have six meetings left.

“I feel like we have to win the series to be really optimistic for the rest of the year,” Chicago’s Brent Lillibridge said. “We’re ready. We’ve been playing good baseball.”

The White Sox, winners of five of six, should be confident with John Danks (6-9, 3.63) on the mound. Danks has gone 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA over his last 11 outings after posting an 0-8 record and 5.25 ERA in his first 11.

“It’s definitely something that builds strength, I guess, is the way to put it,” Danks told the White Sox’s official website. “Confidence, strength. I know I can take a shot to the face for two months and bounce back.”

The left-hander’s last outing was his best of the season, a three-hitter with a season high-tying 10 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory at Seattle on Saturday.

Danks is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against the Tigers this year. He’s posted a 4.76 ERA in losing his last three outings at Comerica Park.

Detroit leadoff hitter Austin Jackson is 4 for 8 with a homer against Danks in 2011. Magglio Ordonez is 15 for 29 in his career versus Danks.

Jackson is hitting .366 against Chicago this year, joining Alex Avila (.381), Miguel Cabrera (.349, four homers) and Jhonny Peralta (.342) as Tigers who have fared well in the season series.

Quentin and Konerko have combined for half of Chicago’s 14 homers against Detroit, which has won seven of 12 meetings.

White Sox, Twins clash in Windy City

The Chicago White Sox take aim at their fourth straight win
this evening when they open a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins at
U.S. Cellular Field.

The White Sox enter this series six games back of the Detroit Tigers in the
American League Central and will meet the frontrunners later this week. But,
first they face a Minnesota team that has been a thorn in their sides this
season, taking seven of the 11 matchups, including five of the six played in
Chicago.

“We have to try to win most series we can,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen
said. “That’s all you can control. You can’t go out there and say we have to
sweep Minnesota and Detroit and Cleveland. It sounds nice but not realistic.
Try to get two out of three if you can. Try to not get swept and hopefully at
end of the day, you are close and have a big punch.”

The White Sox took care of business this past weekend, sweeping a three-game
set from the Seattle Mariners. On Sunday, Tyler Flowers hit a grand slam in a
six-run sixth inning as Chicago rolled to a 9-3 win.

Dayan Viciedo added a three-run homer for the White Sox, winners of three in a
row and five of seven. Paul Konerko contributed three hits, an RBI and scored
twice in the rout.

Gavin Floyd (12-10) ended up allowing five hits and a pair of runs while
fanning six over 7 1/3 innings for the win.

“It was an all-around good ballgame,” said Floyd. “To get run support is
nice.”

Getting the call tonight for the Pale Hose will be left-hander Mark Buehrle,
who is 10-6 with a 3.19 ERA. Buehrle did not get a decision on Tuesday in
Anaheim, as he allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits in six innings
of a 5-4 loss.

Buehrle beat the Twins the last time he faced them and has allowed just one
earned run in 23 innings against them. In fact his 26 wins against the Twins
are more than any other active pitcher has against a single opponent.

Minnesota will counter with righty Kevin Slowey, who has lost both of his
starts this season. Slowey was defeated by Baltimore on Wednesday, as he
surrendered five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He had allowed six runs
in his previous assignment and is 0-2 on the year with a 6.84 ERA.

Slowey has faced the White Sox eight times (seven starts) and is 2-3 against
them with a 6.39 ERA.

Minnesota helped the White Sox out on Sunday and stopped a seven-game losing
streak in the process, as Luke Hughes homered twice and knocked in five runs,
helping the Twins get past the Tigers, 11-4.

“You’ve got to go out to the ballpark ready to play every day,” said Hughes.
“If you don’t, they’ll find someone else to do that.”

It was only Minnesota’s sixth win in the last 27 games, and the second victory
of a completed 11-game homestand.

Brian Duensing (9-13) pitched six innings for the win, giving up four runs –
three earned — on seven hits. The 28-year-old lefty snapped an 0-5 streak and
won for the first time since July 27.

Rangers aim to rebound against White Sox

Written by

The Sports Network

(Sports Network) – The Texas Rangers try to bounce back from a heartbreaking
loss when they open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at U.S.
Cellular Field.

The Rangers were denied a sweep in their four-game series with the Los Angeles
Angels of Anaheim on Thursday when Mike Adams served up a game-winning two-run
home run to Mike Trumbo, sending Texas to a 2-1 loss.

Mike Napoli homered in the loss for the Rangers, who had a six-game win streak
stopped and still lead the AL West by six games over the Angels.

“We definitely got a lift from coming in and playing as well as we did,
winning three of the four and putting ourselves in position to win another
one,” outfielder Josh Hamilton said.

Adams (1-2) was being used because regular closer Neftali Feliz had pitched
four of the previous five days.

“Feliz wasn’t available tonight, and we were comfortable with Mike,” Rangers
manager Ron Washington said. “Trumbo just happened to do it tonight. We didn’t
give it to them. They won it. Give them credit.”

Getting the call for the Rangers tonight will be lefty Matt Harrison, who is
10-8 with a 3.19 earned run average. Harrison did not get a decision on Sunday
in Oakland, but did not pitch well, as he allowed six runs (four earned) and
six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Harrison did not get a decision the last time he faced the White Sox, but is
2-0 in four starts against them with a 3.04 ERA.

Countering for the White Sox will be righty Jake Peavy, who is 5-5
with a 4.69 ERA. Peavy did not get a decision on Saturday against Kansas City,
as he surrendered four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 frames of a 5-4 win.

Peavy has faced the Rangers just twice and has allowed eight runs in 9 1/3
innings of those outings.

Chicago also enters tonight’s tilt on a losing note after dropping a 4-2
decision to the Cleveland Indians. Paul Konerko smacked his 28th home run of
the year in the White Sox’s second straight loss after a three-game win
streak.

The White Sox are now four games back of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

Starting pitcher Philip Humber left the game in the second inning after he was
struck in the head with a ball. Will Ohman (0-3) took the loss, allowing the
game-deciding runs in the sixth inning.

The Rangers have won three of their five matchups against the White Sox this
season.
