Humber struck out five and walked two. The Giants scored their run against Humber in the first inning after a walk and a throwing error by White Sox shortstop Eduardo Escobar.

Brandon Crawford hit a single off Humber in the second inning.

Giants starter Barry Zito allowed consecutive homers to A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Rios in the third and five runs overall in 2 1-3 innings. He gave up nine hits, struck out three and walked two.

San Francisco reliever Scott Munter left with a left calf strain after pitching to one batter in the third inning. He was injured while running to cover first base on a grounder by Escobar.

On the road with Robin: Ventura happy to be back…

What a difference a year made for Central Coast legend Robin Ventura. Last year at this time, the Arroyo Grande resident was an assistant coach for the Arroyo Grande High varsity baseball team. This year, he is starting his first season as the manager of the Chicago White Sox. KSBY Sports caught up with Ventura recently in Arizona, where the Chicago White Sox hold spring training camp.

After a ten year absence from major league baseball, Ventura is back in black with the White Sox. The former All-Star third baseman is a few weeks into his first spring training as a big league manager. “There are moments when you’re like you figure out you’re the one making those decisions, that’s the fun part,” said Ventura.

Robin is enjoying his new role filling out lineup cards, throwing batting practice, working with prospects and interacting with fans. “The first couple of days it seemed odd but then after that it felt like I never really retired. It’s like what i was used to and the days were normal of what you really remember,” said Ventura.

The Righetti High graduate quickly gained the respect of his players, including former Cal Poly star Brent Morel, who is slated to be Ventura’s starting third baseman. “It’s been nice to have him and the whole staff that he brought with him. We’re all excited to work with him and try to pick his brain a little bit,” said Morel, a second year player. “He was such a great player for a long time we’re hoping he carries that over into managing.”

The biggest difference between being a player and a manger Ventura says is having to wrap his brain around every aspect of the game, as opposed to just his individual performance on the field.

The White Sox are 5-11 as of Monday evening in spring training. Robin admits he doesn’t like losing even exhibitions. More importantly though he sees the team coming together and he expects the White Sox to be contenders in the fall. “You kind of like winning games but it’s the not most important thing right now. The most important thing is getting these kids ready for the season. Pitchers, hitters, we want everybody to be ready for opening day and that’s the main focus.”

The 44 year old Ventura is the focus of many in the baseball world and on the Central Coast because the franchise’s face of the 90′s is back where he says he belongs.

The White Sox open the season April 6 at the home of the Texas Rangers.

Ventura spent the first 10 seasons of his 16 year big league career with the White Sox. He finished his career with 294 home runs, 1,182 RBI, 18 grand slams and six Gold Glove awards.

That’s all for today.

By Mark Gonzales

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Chicago White Sox are expected to trim their spring training roster after Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds at Camelback Ranch.

The Sox will have two weeks to cut their roster to 25 before heading to Houston for two exhibition games before the Aprl 6 season opener at Texas.

No cuts have been announced, but the locker stalls of outfielders Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson, catcher Michael Blanke and pitchers Charlie Leesman and Simon Castro were empty Monday morning.

Meanwhile, Gordon Beckham was inserted in the Sox’s lineup in place of Brent Lillibridge. Beckham, who is batting .258 (8-for-31), said he is working on his approach at the plate and said he wanted to play since Tuesday is a day off.

Adam Dunn also returns to the Sox’s lineup after coping with a stiff neck. He will play first and bat fifth.

Here’s the Sox’s lineup:

De Aza – CF

Morel – 3B

Peavy leads White Sox past Mariners 5-0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jake Peavy was knocked around in his first two appearances of spring training.

He was nearly perfect in his third one.

Peavy threw five hitless innings in his best outing of the spring and the Chicago White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Saturday.

“It was a good day, got a lot of good work in,” he said. “It’s refreshing to go out there and have good stuff and good command.”

Eduardo Escobar, a candidate for a reserve role, hit a three-run homer off Hong-Chih Kuo to give the White Sox a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Kuo allowed four runs in an inning.

“He does a lot of things you like to see,” manager Robin Ventura said about Escobar. “He can play shortstop, second base, third base, maybe a little outfield. Today, he did a lot of smart baseball stuff. He can steal bases and move guys along. He has good instinct for the game.”

Peavy struck out five and walked one. The right-hander allowed nine runs in 4 1-3 innings in his previous two starts.

“After that last start, people were talking about, `I thought you said you felt good.’ I do feel good,” he said. “We’re working on stuff. If I make a bad pitch, I turn around in spring training, I’m throwing the same pitch until I get it.”

Peavy said he’s in a good frame of mind, unlike last season when he was coming back from 2010 surgery to repair the latissimus dorsi muscle in his right shoulder. He has a renewed excitement now that he’s healthy.

“I’ve got too much pride and too much love for the game and a little bit of that was taken from me,” Peavy said. “But I’m healthy and I’m blessed. Today, my ankle didn’t hurt me. I didn’t take a Tylenol.

“It’s so refreshing to be healthy, truly out there with your mind at ease.”

The Mariners finished with two hits.

Seattle pitcher Blake Beavan, a candidate for fifth starter, allowed a run and three hits in four innings. He threw 48 pitches and was able to get fly balls by throwing his changeup.

“The big thing for me is I felt strong and still felt good after the fourth inning, and I think that’s where you want to be at the end of the day,” Beavan said.

Brent Lillibridge and Gordon Beckham each had a double for the White Sox.

NOTES: Seattle optioned OF Trayvon Robinson to the minors, reassigned left-handers Sean Henn and Oliver Perez, and right-handers Matt Fox, Aaron Heilman, Josh Kinney and

The Chicago White Sox dropped to 0-2 in Cactus League play with a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday afternoon. White Sox starter John Danks did not have his best stuff and was knocked around for three runs in two innings of work. He also walked three batters.

“I thought I had enough behind the ball,” Danks said after his spring debut. “My ball was doing what I wanted it to. It just wasn’t going where I wanted to throw it. It’s the first one. I’ll be ready to go in five days or so.”

Gordon Beckham was the only White Sox hitter to collect more than one hit; Adam Dunn went hitless but did walk twice; Kosuke Fukudome and Dayan Viciedo were each 0-2 at the plate.

Pujols doubles, Angels beat White Sox 6-2

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—John Danks wasn’t exactly in total control.

Danks walked Albert Pujols and Vernon Wells in the first inning and that set
up Jorge Cantu’s two-run single Tuesday as the Los Angeles Angels beat the
Chicago White Sox 6-2.

Danks, 8-12 with a 4.33 ERA last season, allowed four hits and two runs in
two innings. He also walked three.

“John was a little erratic early,” new White Sox manager Robin Ventura
said. “We’ll work on that.”

Danks is the favorite to start for Chicago on opening day.

“I’d love to,” Danks said. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want to throw
opening day. I keep my fingers crossed. But too many more like this and I don’t
think there will be any question.”

“The ball was doing what I wanted it to,” Danks said. “It just wasn’t
going where I wanted to throw it.”

Pujols narrowly missed his first spring homer, doubling deep to left-center
field off reliever Matt Thornton in the third.

Pujols left the St. Louis Cardinals and signed with the Angels in the
offseason. The three-time NL MVP went 2 for 3 with a double Monday in his
exhibition debut with his new team.

Garrett Richards, among a handful of fifth-starter candidates for the
Angels, allowed four hits and two runs in two innings.

Richards made three starts in seven appearances for the Angels in 2011. He
went 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA over 14 innings.

“I thought his stuff looked great,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

Richards figures to compete with right-hander Jerome Williams for the fifth
spot. Williams is currently out of action with a strained hamstring.

“It’s unfortunate what happened to Jerome,” Richards said. “I just want
to show what I can do and do what I do and hope for the best.”

NOTES: Gordon Beckham had two hits for Chicago. … Callaspo, Cantu and Kole
Calhoun each had two hits for the Angels. … Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen
struck out two in one inning.

Gotta run!.

Dodgers beat White Sox in exhibition opener

Video: Dylan Hernandez on keys to Dodgers success

By Dylan Hernandez

March 5, 2012, 8:05 p.m.

Dodgers 6, Chicago White Sox 4

At the plate: The Dodgers had six hits in a five-run sixth inning that broke open the game. Four of the hits were by sons of former major leaguers, who combined for the cycle in the inning. “That’s crazy,” Scott Van Slyke said. Tony Gwynn Jr. singled, Justin Sellers doubled, Ivan De Jesus Jr. tripled and Van Slyke hit a towering two-run home run that cleared the Dodgers’ bullpen in left field. The Dodgers started their projected opening-day lineup, except for third baseman Juan Uribe, who will start Tuesday. Andre Ethier, who had a minor knee operation last fall, doubled down the right-field line and had no problems reaching second base.

On the mound: Chad Billingsley pitched two scoreless innings, limiting the White Sox to one hit and facing only seven batters. “My main focus was throwing strikes,” said Billingsley, who added that he threw his curveball and changeup in addition to his fastball. He said he made slight changes to his delivery. “It’s feeling better,” Billingsley said. “Today was a good day. You want to build off this.” Rookie Nathan Eovaldi was charged with a run, two hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings.

Extra bases: Of defeating White Sox rookie Manager Robin Ventura, second-year Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly laughed and said, “That’s what he gets. Rookie.” . . . Mark Sweeney, a special assistant to General Manager Ned Colletti, has left the Dodgers to pursue other opportunities in baseball.

Up next: Ted Lilly faces the San Francisco Giants and Barry Zito at noon PST Tuesday at Camelback Ranch.

White Sox Vs. Dodgers Preview: Phil Humber Takes…

Read More: Paul Konerko (1B – CWS), Adam Dunn (DH – CWS), Alejandro De Aza (CF – CWS), A.J. Pierzynski (C – CWS), Alex Rios (CF – CWS), Alexei Ramirez (SS – CWS), Dayan Viciedo (RF – CWS), Gordon Beckham (2B – CWS), Brent Morel (3B – CWS), Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers

The Chicago White Sox (0-0) are starting the 2012 Spring Training season with reliever turned surprise workhorse, RHP Phil Humber. The Sox called the 29-year-old Humber into the starting rotation last season after spending five seasons split between the minors and long relief with various MLB teams.

Humber went on to pitch 163 solid innings in 2011, sporting a 3.75 ERA and 3.58 FIP. He enters the season as a favorite for at least the No. 5 slot in the rotation.

Here’s today’s lineup:

CF Alejandro De Aza
C A.J. Pierzynski
RF Alex Rios
1B Paul Konerko
DH Adam Dunn
SS Alexei Ramirez
LF Dayan Viciedo
3B Brent Morel
2B Gordon Beckham

The Sox will also look for a strong outing from DH Adam Dunn, who had an unredeemingly bad 2011 season, hitting only 11 homers for a .159/.292/.277 slash and -2.9 WAR. According to former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, Dunn’s problems began as early as the 2011 Spring Training, so success now would go a long way towards relieving worried fans’ fears.

Dunn and the other starters will likely get only a few innings today before reserves and prospects get their chances to play.

Sox's lineup Monday a preview of…

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Manager Robin Ventura’s Chicago White Sox’s lineup Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers resembles what the 2012 regular-season lineup could look like.

Alex Rios will bat third, with Adam Dunn, Alexei Ramirez and Dayan Viciedo batting behind cleanup hitter Paul Konerko. Rios gives the Sox more speed between A.J. Pierzynski and Konerko.

“It could change, but the way I look at it, I like it,” Ventura said Sunday. “That’s why I wrote it that way.”

Ventura acknowledged that Rios at the third spot is the key to the lineup.

“He’s been swinging it great,” Ventura said. “You look at everything he has. He would be that guy who fits that spot. That’s where we’re going. I trust him.”

Before leaving the Sox’s spring training complex, Rios said he looked forward to batting third and playing right.

Here’s the Sox’s lineup, as well as their lineup for a B game against Cleveland at Goodyear at 10 a.m.:
