It’s unclear exactly how the Chicago Cubs are going to approach this offseason yet under the new front office led by Theo Epstein, but they’ve already had multiple discussions with the agent for former White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the team has spoken with Jeff Berry, Buehrle’s agent, multiple times recently.

If the money is right, Buehrle would certainly be a fit for the Cubs given their need for pitching. It’s unclear how much Carlos Zambrano will be able to contribute next season, if at all, so they really only have three established starters right now in Ryan Dempster, Matt Garza and Randy Wells.

Buehrle would give them a dependable lefty and a steady veteran presence, although the team should be worried about how his contact-oriented approach would work against a defense that was pretty bad last season. There’s a chance that the move from the more difficult American League to the National League would alleviate some of those concerns, though, especially for someone with such a long track record.

By way of the Chicago Tribune‘s Mark Gonzales comes a report that White Sox LHP Mark Buehrle has received a contract offer from the Marlins:

According to a tweet by SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Marlins have made an offer to Buehrle, who visited the Marlins’ new stadium in Miami on Tuesday. That follows a report by FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal who tweeted that the Marlins also made offers to free agents Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes.

If the reports of those offers are all accurate, then the Marlins appear very serious about making a splash during this offseason. Buehrle just completed a 4-year, $56 million deal with the White Sox. He’s been with the Sox for his entire major league career, which spans 12 seasons.

Chicago White Sox GM Ken Williams says that he's already found that there's plenty of interest from other teams to make deals for some of his players, such as starting pitchers John Danks(notes) and Gavin Floyd(notes).

“We got some players that have garnered some interest from a number of clubs,” Williams said, the Trib reports. “And we’ve got to exhaust ourselves to make sure that if we end up making a deal or end up staying the course and try to add to it, that we know exactly what we’re getting ourselves into.”

The 26-year-old Danks went 8-12 with a 4.33 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 170.1 innings pitched this past season. After arbitration, he’ll likely make about $15 million next season, the Tribune notes. The 28-year-old Floyd went 12-13 with a 4.37 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 193.2 innings pitched this past season for the Sox.

Williams also told the paper that the team has had contact with Mark Buehrle(notes) to let him know it is interested in re-signing him.

Chicago White Sox ace Mark Buehrle and the Cubs' Kerry Wood and Carlos Pena were among 148 players filing for free agency Sunday. The Sox and Cubs have exclusive negotiating rights with their free agents through Wednesday at 11 p.m

Chicago White Sox ace Mark Buehrle and the Cubs’ Kerry Wood and Carlos Pena were among 148 players filing for free agency Sunday.

The Sox and Cubs have exclusive negotiating rights with their free agents through Wednesday at 11 p.m. After that, other teams are allowed to make financial offers to free agents.

Buehrle, 32, has 161 wins and a 3.83 ERA during his storied Sox career. He has 11 consecutive seasons of at least 200 innings, 30 starts and 10 victories.

The Sox have anticipated that negotiations with Buehrle could be similar to those last year with Paul Konerko, who didn’t re-sign with the Sox until early December after considering an offer from Arizona. Jeff Berry, Buehrle’s agent with Creative Artists Agency, has said his client will listen to offers from other teams before deciding.

The other Sox’s players who filed for free agency were leadoff hitter Juan Pierre, infielder Omar Vizquel and catcher Ramon Castro. The Sox also must decide soon whether to pick up or decline the $3.75 million club option on reliever Jason Frasor, with the latter option considered likely.

In addition to Wood and Pena, the Cubs’ other players who filed for free agency were outfielder Reed Johnson and pitchers John Grabow, Rodrigo Lopez and Ramon Ortiz.

The Cardinals’ Albert Pujols, Edwin Jackson, Gerald Laird, Nick Punto and Arthur Rhodes were also on the list.

Among the high-profile free agents are Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder, shortstops Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies and Jose Reyes of the Mets, and Padres closer Heath Bell and Milwaukee pitcher Francisco Rodriguez.

Beyond the list of 148, there are other players who are eligible for free agency pending provisions in their contracts. Yankees ace CC Sabathia is among them.

With the end of a disappointing season drawing near, the Chicago White Sox’s attention has turned to next year.

Ozzie Guillen won’t be a part of their future.

Released from his contract per his request, Guillen will no longer be the manager Tuesday when the White Sox continue a three-game set with the visiting Toronto Blue Jays (7:10 p.m CT).

Guillen, who had one year left on his contract, met with owner Jerry Reinsdorf before Monday night’s 4-3 win over Toronto (80-80) to express his interest in returning in 2012, but only with an extension for more money.

“Was it time for a change? I don’t think so,” general manager Kenny Williams said. “I guess things were accelerated. We had no intention of firing him. This was kind of acquiescing to some of his desires more than anything. It is what it is. I don’t wish to expound on any of the peripherals to the degree that they become more of a story than they really are.

“This is a case of a man making a business decision for himself and his family. And we respected it, we respected it enough to allow this to happen. Obviously we didn’t agree to the request for an extension.”

Chicago (78-82) retains the right to compensation should Guillen accept a managerial position with another big league team next year. With Florida manager Jack McKeon retiring, there is speculation Guillen could be bound for the Marlins.

“It could be anybody. They sound like they are interested,” Guillen said.

World Series champion

The only manager in franchise history to lead the White Sox to more than one division or league title, Guillen compiled a 678-617 record during his eight seasons in Chicago — highlighted by winning the 2005 World Series.

“It was my call and I appreciated the White Sox organization letting me do what I like to do and what is best,” he said. “… Maybe not the best, maybe it’s the worst. You don’t know what is out there. Maybe I’m dreaming. I might not appreciate what I got here. You don’t know. You have to close the page and move on. That’s life. Hopefully the next book treats me the way this book treated me.”

Tuesday’s scheduled White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (12-9, 3.72 ERA), whose contract is up after this season, could also find himself with another team in 2012.

“I’m not looking at it as my last start,” he said. “I’m going to go out there as if I’m coming back next year. It all depends on what the White Sox want to do. They spent a lot of money this year and we didn’t get it done. They may want to go young. It’s up to them.”

With 198 1/3 innings, Buehrle is on the verge of reaching 200 for the 11th consecutive season. He had gone 0-3 with an 11.74 ERA over his previous three starts before regrouping Wednesday, throwing six innings of two-run ball in an 8-4 win at Cleveland.

The left-hander is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last six home meetings with the Blue Jays.

Buehrle has had his way with slugger Adam Lind, holding him hitless in 12 career at-bats. Jose Bautista, who is 3-for-20 (.150) in his last six games at Chicago, is 5-for-19 with a home run off Buehrle.

With 43 homers — two more than the Yankees’ Curtis Granderson — Bautista is on the verge of finishing as the major league home run leader in back-to-back seasons.

The Blue Jays will give the ball to rookie Henderson Alvarez (1-2, 3.65 ERA).

The 21-year-old right-hander, who has never faced the White Sox, is 1-1 with a 0.64 ERA and a .196 opponent batting average over his last two road starts, but has no decisions in four September outings — all at home.

BALTIMORE (AP)—Scoring four runs before making an out, the Chicago White
Sox made it easy for Mark Buehrle(notes) to reach double figures in wins for an 11
straight season.

Buehrle pitched eight innings to earn his 10th win, Alexei Ramirez(notes) homered
in a four-run first, and Chicago cruised past the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 Thursday
night.

Juan Pierre(notes) had three hits and two RBIs for the White Sox, who took three of
four from the Orioles to complete a 6-1 road trip. Chicago is 58-59, but that’s
good enough to be four games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

“Any other division we’re looking at offseason plans like fishing. But in
this division were still in the middle of it,” Pierre said. “Without a doubt
the best road trip we have had all year. Everything clicked all throughout the
lineup.”

Pierre led off the first inning with a single and Ramirez hit Chris
Tillman’s(notes) eighth pitch into the left-field seats. Paul Konerko(notes) doubled and
scored on a double by Carlos Quentin(notes), and A.J. Pierzynski(notes) followed with another
double to make it 4-0 on the 16th offering by Tillman, who needed 32 pitches to
retire the side.

That was enough support for Buehrle, who hadn’t given up more than three
runs in a game since April 22.

“With Buehrle on the mound throwing the ball the way he has been the last
few months, you feel comfortable,” manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Buehrle (10-5) gave up three runs and six hits, struck out six and walked
none. The left-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in 18 straight starts,
matching the club record set by Frank Smith in 1909, according to research by
the Elias Sports Bureau.

Buehrle is 4-0 in his last five starts, and his run of 10-win seasons is a
franchise record. In this one, the early cushion didn’t hurt.

“You still to go out there and pitch, but any time you get runs early in
the game it helps out, especially before you take the mound,” Buehrle said.
“The goal I always go for is to go deep in the game, have us score runs and
have the bullpen protect your leads.”

Sergio Santos(notes) worked a perfect ninth for his 25th save. Santos set a major
league record by starting the season with 25 straight scoreless appearances on
the road, breaking the mark set by Mariano Rivera(notes) in 2005. He has a 30-game
scoreless run on the road over two seasons.

Nick Markakis(notes) hit his 100th career home run for the Orioles, who have lost
seven of nine. Tillman (3-5) didn’t get an out until his 20th pitch and ended up
giving up six runs and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings.

“You see Buehrle out there, and as soon as it goes 4- and 6-0, it just
plays right into his hands,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “He takes
your aggressiveness and uses it against you. He has so many things to speed you
up and slow you down. If you had to pick a guy to pitch when you get in that
situation, he’s a blueprint.”

Tillman escaped damage in the second despite giving up a leadoff double to
Pierre but couldn’t get out of the third. Adam Dunn(notes) walked and took third on a
single by Brent Morel(notes), who took an extra base when Markakis attempted to throw
out Dunn at third. Pierre followed with a two-run single off the glove of first
baseman Chris Davis(notes) for a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom half, Nolan Reimold(notes) doubled and scored on a single by J.J.
Hardy(notes) before Markakis launched a shot over the right-field scoreboard.

After Baltimore put runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth,
Buehrle struck out Markakis. The Orioles had only one baserunner the rest of the
way—Reimold, who beat out a grounder with two outs in the seventh.

NOTES: After the game Tillman was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. …
Pierzynski finished with three hits and went 10 for 17 in the series to raise
his batting average 15 points to .295. … The teams split the eight-game season
series. … The White Sox head home to face the Kansas City Royals in a
three-game series that begins Friday. Zach Stewart(notes) (1-1) will pitch for Chicago,
the only AL team with a losing record at home (24-32) and a winning record
(34-27) on the road. The White Sox have won eight of nine road games. …
Baltimore begins a three-game set against Detroit on Friday night. Alfredo Simon(notes)
will pitch for the Orioles, still in search of their first series win since June
24-26 against Cincinnati. … The Orioles have lost nine of their last 10
series finales. … It was the 20th anniversary of the no-hitter that Chicago’s
Wilson Alvarez threw against the Orioles at Memorial Stadium.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — When asked if his team’s come-from-behind win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night will snap the Chicago White Sox out of their funk, manager Ozzie Guillen shrugged.

“Sometimes I put my hopes so high, then a few days later I have a broken heart,” he said.

One thing Guillen can count on is Mark Buehrle.

Carlos Quentin hit two home runs and had four RBIs, Buehrle was sharp after a rough first inning, and the White Sox beat the Twins 5-3 to snap a six-game losing streak.

Buehrle (9-5) allowed three unearned runs and four hits over eight innings, extending his streak of allowing three runs or fewer to 17 straight games.

All three runs against Buehrle came in the first inning and were unearned because of an error by first baseman Adam Dunn.

After Jason Kubel gave the Twins a 3-1 lead with a two-run homer, Buehrle got into his familiar groove of working quickly and retired 22 of the last 24 hitters he faced.

“Luck? I don’t know,” Buehrle said when asked how he’s managed to run off this streak late in his career. “It’s everything. I can’t put my finger on just one thing.”

Chris Sale pitched the ninth for his third save in four chances.

The White Sox — third in the AL Central — needed Quentin’s 14th multi-homer game of his career to get back to winning and beat the Twins for the just the 11th time in their last 13 games.

His two-run shot in the fifth off starter Nick Blackburn (7-9) gave Chicago the lead for good.

“Quentin is one of those guys that can run off five or six home runs with the best of them,” Juan Pierre said. “We’ll jump on his shoulders when need be.”

The Twins honored the 1991 World Series championship team during a pregame ceremony and gave away a bobblehead commemorating the famous play in Game 2 where Ron Gant was called out at first after Kent Hrbek appeared to wrestle him off the base.

The current Twins could use some of that fighter mentality as they fade back out of contention.

Minnesota arrived home at 5:30 a.m. Friday after going 4-6 on a West Coast trip, and are nine games behind Detroit in the AL Central.

A common theme during the Twins’ slide has been lackluster starting pitching and an offense that shows no life after falling behind. The Twins managed two hits after falling behind in the fifth.

While Blackburn needed 90 pitches to get through 5 1-3 innings, Buehrle needed only 94 through eight.

“To be honest, I looked up there in the fifth inning at my pitch count and I thought it was higher than what it was, Buehrle said. “Just everything is working right now.”

The White Sox did not draw a walk while getting swept by the Yankees earlier this week. Before the game, Guillen chalked it up to guys wanting to single-handedly break the team out its slump and being overly aggressive.

The White Sox were patient against the normally accurate Blackburn, however. Paul Konerko drew the first walk three batters into the game and Chicago coaxed a career-high six walks from Blackburn.

“Just trying to pick around the plate a little bit too much,” Blackburn said. “With the way things have been going, I haven’t really been trusting my pitches lately and tonight everything was down in the strike zone, I had good movement, but I wasn’t relaxing enough.”

The White Sox left the bases loaded twice, were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 runners.

They managed to get one run home with the bases loaded when Alexei Ramirez scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

“This is the White Sox up and down, unpredictable team,” Guillen said.

Joe Mauer — getting another start at first base — drove in the Twins’ other run with a single in the first.

Jim Thome, who needs two more home runs to reach 600, did not play against his former team. Center fielder Denard Span returned from a concussion earlier this week, but sat out Friday.

A common theme during the Twins’ slide has been lackluster starting pitching and an offense that shows no life after falling behind. The Twins managed two hits after falling behind in the fifth.

While Blackburn needed 90 pitches to get through 5 Zc innings, Buehrle needed only 94 through eight.

Joe Mauer – getting another start at first base – drove in the Twins’ other run with a single in the first.

Jim Thome, who needs two more home runs to reach 600, did not play against his former team. Center fielder Denard Span returned from a concussion earlier this week, but sat out Friday.

MINNEAPOLIS — When asked if his team’s come-from-behind win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night will snap the Chicago White Sox out of their funk, manager Ozzie Guillen shrugged.

Notes: The White Sox announced after that game that RHP Zach Stewart will be called up to start Saturday’s game in place of RHP Jake Peavy. Peavy will be pushed back to Sunday. Reliever Brian Bruney was designated for assignment to make room for Stewart. … Guillen on Thome possibly hitting his 600th home run this weekend: “I hope if he hits it, it’s not to win the game. But I want to see it.” … White Sox CF Alex Rios, hitting .153 in his last 22 games, didn’t start, but pinch-ran for Konerko in the eighth. … Twins 2B Alexi Casilla (right hamstring) took grounders before the game and is on track to return next week. … Twins 1B Justin Morneau began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester. … Buehrle’s streak of 17 games allowing three runs or fewer is tied with Dave Lemonds for the longest in White Sox history. … Carl Pavano starts for the Twins on Saturday night against Stewart. … Stewart is making his first start since coming over in a trade with the Blue Jays. … Pavano is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA against the White Sox this season. … Konerko’s walk in the first inning was the first time a White Sox hitter drew a walk in 133 plate appearances. … Kubel’s home run was the 100th of his career and 20th against the White Sox. … Quentin’s last multi-homer game was June 8 against Seattle. … Twins 3B Danny Valencia committed his 15th error in 105 games. He had six errors in 81 games last season.

CHICAGO — Mark Buehrle overcame some shaky defense and kept the Chicago White Sox close early in the game Monday night.

Neither rattled nor perturbed by two popups that weren’t caught, Buehrle hung around for six innings and the Chicago White Sox got a pair of key two-out hits in the fifth inning and solo homers from Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3.

The win moved the White Sox within 3 1/2 games of the first-place Tigers in the AL Central.

“I know they feel bad when they don’t make a play and you try to pitch out of it. I try to pick them up,” Buehrle said, adding that the victory in the opener of a three-game series is important but should be enjoyed with some perspective.

“We can’t sit here and say `Oh we’re going to win the division now, we won the first game against these guys.’ Obviously it’s big to win first game, but it’s a tough task tomorrow with (Justin) Verlander on the mound. They’re one of the toughest lineups I’ve faced 1-9, these guys.”

Buehrle (8-5) allowed 10 hits and Detroit had a runner on in each of his six innings, but the Tigers managed just two unearned runs off the left-hander.

“Buehrle’s been like that all his life,” Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. “You pick the mistake up and that’s what Buehrle does. He got out there and regardless of what happens behind him, he continues to do what he does and never complain about anything.”

Detroit rookie Duane Below (0-1) surrendered six hits and four runs in 4 2-3 innings.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected before the start of the sixth for questioning balls and strikes against Chicago’s Alexei Ramirez, who had the first of the two, two-out hits in Chicago’s three-run fifth.

“I thought we had Ramirez struck out and the umpire didn’t think so. I told him that and he didn’t appreciate that. I understand that, no big deal,” Leyland said after his third ejection this season and 59th of his career. This one came from home plate umpire Jim Wolfe.

“I thought the pitch to Ramirez was a pitch that Jim was calling all night, really. Jim’s a very good umpire.”

Konerko hit his 23rd homer and Pierzynski his fourth for the White Sox, both off Chance Ruffin in his major league debut.

Miguel Cabrera connected on his 21st homer for Detroit, a solo shot off reliever Jesse Crain in the seventh.

A gaffe by Cabrera at first base helped Chicago take the lead with a two-out, three-run rally in the fifth. Juan Pierre reached on a fielder’s choice and was caught leaving early for second, but Cabrera dropped Below’s throw to first. That allowed Pierre to reach second on the stolen base and he went on to score on Ramirez’s two-out RBI single.

Konerko was walked intentionally and Adam Dunn walked to load the bases, ending Below’s night. Quentin then greeted Ruffin, promoted from the minors earlier Monday, with a two-run double to make it 4-2.

“All year long we’ve been struggling with two outs and men in scoring position. And then all of a sudden we got that one,” Guillen said of Ramirez’s game-tying hit. “I think it pumps everybody up.”

Chicago’s defense came unglued in the second, leading to a pair of unearned runs for the Tigers. Magglio Ordonez singled with two outs and made it to third when White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham dropped Cabrera’s popup into shallow center for an error.

Victor Martinez added an RBI single before Jhonny Peralta hit another shallow pop to left center that Chicago center fielder Alex Rios let fall in front of him, thinking shortstop Ramirez was going to catch it. Detroit’s second run scored on the play.

After an infield single loaded the bases, Rios went near the fence in center to track down Ryan Raburn’s long drive to end the inning.

Chicago got a run in the bottom half on Konerko’s sacrifice fly that followed singles by Brent Morel and Pierre and a sacrifice.

“Where we are at in the standings right now, it’s like you know we are certainly not out of it but we would like to stick our nose in there a little bit further and start making up some ground,” said Konerko, who also added two nice plays at first base.

“We’ve been treading water and teams have allowed us to tread water all year.

“It’s time to make a move and get in there and make ourselves known in the division. It’s still going to be another two months before there’s an answer.”

Notes: Buehrle improved to 18-9 in his career against the Tigers and to 7-1 in his last 11 starts against them. … After Cabrera’s homer in the seventh, Detroit had runners at first and second, but when Crain’s low pitch bounced off catcher Pierzynski, the ball ricocheted to Crain, who threw to second to get Carlos Guillen for the final out. … Detroit has captured 14 of the last 19 meetings with the White Sox. Chicago has won 3 of the last 4.
